The Replacement He Never Wanted
Sensing the atmosphere growing tense, Virginia quickly stepped out from behind Lance. The matter started because of her, so she couldn't let Lance take the blame for her. Standing before the Divine Healer, she adopted an exceptionally humble posture. "I'm sorry, Dr. Daves! I acted out of line. Please accept my sincerest apologies." Her words were genuine, accompanied by a pair of innocent, clear eyes. Anyone would have softened at the sight. But Matthew was unmoved. He glanced at Virginia with a cold look. "If he's not going to speak, then you tell me," the old man said, gesturing towards Virginia. Angel is a fool. ButI'm not. The moment he glanced at her, Matthew sensed that her relationship with Lance wasn't anything proper. "What's your relationship with him?"Matthew's eyes were sharp as an eagle's, locking onto Virginia with a piercing gaze. He didn't want to hear an answer that would upset Virginia. His granddaughter should not be mistreated. Virginia was intimidated by the questioning, her unease making her glance nervously at Lance. Lance's face was equally tense. He seemed like he wanted to speak, but no words came out, leaving him standing stiffly in place. "Answer me. "What's your relationship with him?" Matthew asked again, his voice rising, the pressure growing stronger. Virginia panicked, her words stumbling, "Lance and I are ... " Before she could finish, Lance quickly interrupted, as if trying to cover up. He blurted out, "She's my sister! "Just a sister." Once the words left his mouth, Lance's eyelashes fluttered slightly, his face pale. He felt his throat tighten, his voice raspy. Virginia froze, swallowing the words she had been about to say: We're lovers. Just a sister? Huh ... A sister. After all the days she spent at the Johnston Residence, dutifully staying by Lance's side, this was the only thing she got—a dismissive "just a sister." The bright lights overhead shone down on her, and though the warmth from the heaters in the hall was strong, she couldn't shake the piercing cold that swept through her. "Sister?" Matthew raised an eyebrow, repeating the title with a thoughtful expression. "Mm." Lance nodded, his movement stiff and hesitant. He couldn't bring himself to meet Virginia's eyes. He couldn't bring himself to think about what Virginia might be feeling hearing that. But in this desperate moment, it was the only thing he could say. After all, he was still married to Addison, and Addison was still his legal wife. He couldn't reveal Virginia's identity to the doctor. Even if he were to admit her identity, he could never say it outright. This decision was made because exposing Virginia as the mistress would only disgrace the Johnstons. The Johnstons, a respected family, couldn't afford such a scandal. "Lance ... " Virginia tried to call out to him. But Lance only gave her his back. The well-dressed man stood with his back to her, not even sparing a glance in her direction. His posture was upright as he turned to the Divine Healer, speaking in a polite tone, "It's getting late. Shall we continue upstairs?"
