The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 443 The Gaze That Lingers

If Marilyn had encountered a few women like Virginia in her youth, she might not have been able to outmatch them. No wonder Lance seemed to favor her. Virginia began to panic after waiting a long time without getting any response from him. With so many people watching, she couldn't let herself be humiliated in front of everyone. "Lance, are you really not going to eat?" Her lips pouted even more, and her big, grape-like eyes were brimming with so much grievance they seemed ready to spill over. "Just take one bite. I cut this specially for you." Virginia took the initiative to pierce a piece of steak with her fork and brought it to his lips. "Lance, come on." The beef wasn't tender enough to pull apart, but the way Virginia looked at Lance right now? That was definitely pulling some strings. Her expression wasn't even remotely innocent. The atmosphere grew awkwardly silent for a moment; the only sound at the table was her coquettish whining. Marilyn suddenly felt her appetite plummet. Even the soup she had just raised to her lips seemed hard to swallow. Listening to Virginia's simpering tone while eating was genuinely off-putting. The steak lingered at Lance's lips as Virginia clarified she wouldn't budge until he took a bite. Lance raised his eyes slightly, glancing in Addison's direction as if by chance. But Addison seemed utterly oblivious, her gaze steady on her food, eating bite after delicate bite with practiced elegance. It was as if nothing happening around her had anything to do with her. The more composed Addison appeared the more irritated Lance felt. What was she trying to do? Was she deliberately ignoring him? Virginia noticed Lance's wandering gaze and a new wave of resentment swelled within her. She pushed the piece of steak even closer to him."Lance, I am right here." But the man remained obstinate, his eyes fixed solely on Addison. Addison, meanwhile, kept her head down, sipping soup with a spoon. A few loose strands of hair fell over her forehead, which she gently tucked behind her ear. Lance's gaze was as sharp as an eagle's, and she couldn't escape it even if she tried. She had no choice but to feign composure, mechanically spooning one mouthful after another into her mouth. He should have eaten if Virginia had already cut the steak for him. Why was he staring at her instead? His intense gaze made her feel utterly ill at ease. Though Addison kept eating, it was apparent she noticed his attention. She deliberately avoided looking at him, both annoyed and flustered. Lance, meanwhile, was so frustrated he could've ground his back teeth into powder.Seeing his eyes practically glued to Addison, Virginia deliberately exaggerated her tone to draw his attention back. "Lance, are you looking at Addison? "Addison already has so much food on her plate, so I didn't give her any. "But don't be upset, Lance. If you eat this steak, I'll cut a portion for her right now." Virginia looked at him with pitiful eyes as she spoke, her voice soft and imploring. Finally, Addison, exasperated by Lance's persistent stare, finished the last bit of soup in her spoon and lifted her gaze. Their eyes met. Lance didn't know what had come over him. Still, seeing her finally meet his eyes, he immediately tilted his body slightly to the side, a faint shift in his demeanor.
