The Replacement He Never Wanted
Virginia's soft, trembling voice sounded so pure and innocent combined with her watery eyes, pink lips, and flushed face. It was as if she lived in a different world—one untouched by men. She sounded as though the slightest brush from a man would prompt her to scrub herself clean for three days and nights, just to preserve her virtue. Addison sneered, her cold gaze sweeping over Virginia's innocent act. If she didn't already know what kind of person Virginia was behind closed doors, she might've actually believed the performance that Virginia had never even laid eyes on a man. "Ms. Dolton, do you perhaps live in the Land of Women?" Addison said, feigning exaggerated surprise as her eyes widened theatrically. Her tone dripped with sarcasm, her mockery laid bare. Virginia's expression darkened instantly. "I—" she stammered as she scrambled for a retort. "I'm ... I'm not like you! Always tugging and pulling at men! You're hardly virtuous! "Addison, you're too carefree. You keep in touch with countless men. You have different men beside you every day. I could never compare to that." As she reached the end of her rant, Virginia's voice grew louder, as though the sound of her words could bolster her confidence. Sure enough, her accusation struck a nerve. Lance's face grew somber, his expression darkening with every word. "Are you sure? Which eye of yours saw me doing that?" Addison's cold smile never wavered. When Virginia couldn't win an argument, she always resorted to dragging someone else down in the mud with her. It was so typical of her. "I was just using a metaphor. The point is, that you're constantly surrounded by men. You don't even care about Lance's reputation! "This hasn't caused much of a stir in Halton's elite circles yet, but if word gets out, you'll ruin Lance's name entirely!" Virginia spoke in a lofty, self-righteous tone, as though delivering a final verdict. Every word implied that Addison was guilty of cheating on Lance. Addison scoffed. "Well, you're right. You really can't compare to me. "After all, you live your days lavishly with the card that Lance provides. Meanwhile, I'm busy conducting research and negotiating partnerships. Naturally, I interact with a lot of men. "If living off a man's money is your definition of honor, Ms. Dolton, then there's really nothing more I can say." Addison shrugged nonchalantly. Her words hit a nerve and Virginia's face darkened even further. "Just go already. Stop wasting everyone's time." If this weren't the Johnston Residence, with Lance standing nearby and Marilyn upstairs, Addison would've called the guards to drag Virginia out long ago. Yet Virginia remained rooted to the spot, as if glued there. It was clear she was ready to stay all night if she had to. Addison, however, had no intention of dragging this out. "If you're still scared, then ask Lana to keep you company," she said casually. "Lana's a woman. Surely that's less of an issue for you?" "Lana ... " Virginia's face twisted in discomfort. A maiddidn'tdeservetoshare a roomwithme. The thought alone made her stomach churn. She couldn't even fathom it. It wasn't physical filth she feared—it was psychological. To her, sharing a room with a servant would taint the entire space, polluting the very air she breathed. It would feel unbearably dirty.
