The Replacement He Never Wanted
In the blink of an eye, it drew the attention of everyone nearby. The crowd at the airport turned their attention to the source of the noise, their eyes filled with awe and curiosity. The engine's roar was so loud, it felt like it shook the air, even making Addison's ears throb with pain. She reflexively covered them with her hands. Who would want to draw so much attention to themselves, blasting their car's sound system like that, as if everyone needed to know how much money they had? "Such a showoff." Addison muttered quietly, her gaze fixed on the ground. Just then, a pair of polished black shoes appeared before her. She glanced up, instinctively, and was immediately caught in Lance's deep, piercing gaze. Lance? Is thatloudnoisecomingfrom his car? He istheonecausingallthiscommotion? Addison blinked, her thoughts momentarily frozen. Oh no ... I wasjusttalkingabouthim. NowI'mprobablyabouttogetcaught. Old memories flashed through her mind, and she could already imagine the annoyed look on Lance's face. "What's wrong?" As they both stood there, frozen, Lance broke the silence. "Are you coming?" He casually took the suitcase from her hand and stood by her side. "Mom is waiting for you at home." The calmness in Lance's voice, with no trace of anger, made Addison realize he hadn't heard her quiet remarks. She let out a quiet sigh of relief. "It's nothing. Let's go," she said with a smile, pretending everything was normal. Lance noticed Addison seemed distracted, but since she didn't seem willing to share, he didn't press further. He opened the passenger door for her, and after she climbed in, he went to the trunk to place the suitcase inside."Are you cold? Want me to turn up the air conditioning?" Once Lance settled into the driver's seat, he asked the question. Addison raised an eyebrow, a little taken aback. Maybe it was just her, but it seemed like Lance was acting unusually polite today. He never behaved like this around her. Could it be that, with the divorce looming, he was trying to keep things civil, show some respect? "What's wrong? Is there something on my face?" Lance turned his sharp, handsome face toward her, tilting his head slightly. "Ah ... " Addison snapped out of her thoughts, caught off guard by his gaze. "No, nothing. "I'm not cold, the temperature is perfect. No need to adjust it." If Lance wanted to be a gentleman, she would let him. Even though Addison couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, given his odd politeness, she decided to stay quiet and watch what he did next.Lance raised an eyebrow at her, his eyes holding an unreadable expression as she said she wasn't cold. A sense of unease crept deeper inside Addison. "Is something wrong? You're not driving?" she asked cautiously. His expression made it clear he had something on his mind. Sure enough, he cleared his throat and spoke up. He pointed toward her hands, which had turned red from the cold. "Are you sure you're not cold?" Addison looked down at the hands he was pointing to and realized, to her surprise, her fingers had become bright red and were stiff from the chill.
