The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 40 Wouldn't Be His Problem

Addison frowned as doubts clouded her mind. Is Raymond truly able to acquire both Raven's seal and the anti-counterfeit mark? Listening to Raymond's confident assertions, Lance raised an eyebrow. "Then show me the authorization letter. I'll have someone inspect it." Raymond smirked. "I'm not going to just hand it to you like that. I need to make sure it stays in my hands." Lance gave a quick nod. "Fine. You can hold on to it, but I'll still bring someone in to verify it personally." Raymond felt satisfied with this agreement, but as he turned, he noticed Teagan standing there, unsure and clearly wanting to speak but hesitating. He gave her a subtle nod, silently assuring her everything was fine. After a moment of silence, Lance spoke, "Come with me to my office." He made his way to the elevator and pressed the button, prompting the three of them to enter. Addison, however, stayed behind, watching the elevator doors close with a heavy feeling in her chest. She knew she couldn't follow them up now. As the doors shut, a surprising calmness washed over her. There was no need for her to reveal her identity or prove the authenticity of anything. Her focus was on Johnston Enterprise, and regardless of whether Lance handed over the CEO position to Raymond, she had other plans to protect the company. Once Raymond took over, all she would need to do was wait for the company to crumble and, under Keith's name, acquire it. That would solve everything. As for Lance, if he decided to sign the papers, acquiring Johnston Enterprise wouldn't be his problem anymore. With a clearer mind, Addison turned and left the building. The power struggle between Raymond, Teagan, and Lance was theirs to resolve. Whether they succeeded or failed no longer mattered to her. The trio continued their ascent to the floor where Mr. Johnston's office was located. Isaac was sitting at his desk when he noticed the footsteps approaching. Looking up, he saw the two shareholders trailing behind Lance. Their rivalry with Lance had become the talk of the company, sparking division and unrest among the staff. What are they doing here now? Is the company really going to change hands? Virginia, seated inside, glanced up when Lance entered. "Lance, you're back. Did you see Addison? Did you get through to her? Is she still bothering you?" Lance pinched the bridge of his nose, realizing he hadn't even noticed Virginia sitting there, as it had been a while since any women visited his office. He sighed. "We'll talk later. Just stay here for now." Without waiting for a response, he stepped out again, leaving Virginia standing there in silence. Fuming, Virginia watched him go. Is his work really so important that he can't even spare a word for me? She took her seat, still indignant. Wait. Lance went downstairs to meet with Addison earlier. Has something happened between them? What else could explain his behavior? Addison is nothing but trouble. No matter how many times she's warned, she never learns. What tricks has she pulled this time to get Lance to act like this? Has she badmouthed me again? Lance's voice cut through her thoughts. "I've called someone over. Follow me to the office downstairs." Raymond, still irritated, couldn't believe that Lance still wouldn't let him into the office. Once the papers were signed, the office would be his, and he would savor that moment. He glanced at the door, its gold letters reading "CEO," imagining himself in that position. But just as he was about to walk away, the door opened slightly, revealing a woman's figure. Raymond blinked. Is that Addison? Virginia, noticing Raymond's gaze, gasped. In a hurry, she slammed the door shut. She had been hoping to check on Lance, to see if he was truly busy with work or if Addison had distracted him again. But when she opened the door, it was Raymond who stood there. Raymond narrowed his eyes. No ... that's not Addison. It's Virginia. But why is she there? And why is she with Lance? Surely, Dad doesn't know about this. Lance, oblivious to the noise, continued walking down to the lower office. The three arrived at the downstairs office, where Isaac served tea with respect. It wasn't long before Kaden Lacroix entered the room. Lance glanced at Raymond. "Show it to him." Raymond, grinning with pride, pulled out the authorization letter. "Make sure you check it thoroughly. It's important." Kaden nodded and took the letter, carefully inspecting it. After a moment, Kaden spoke. "The seal is definitely from Raven." Raymond, unfazed, nodded. "So we're done here, right?" Kaden flipped the letter over, continuing. "But I didn't see any anti-counterfeit mark from Raven Company." Raymond's expression darkened. "Anti-counterfeit mark?" What anti-counterfeit mark? No one told me there's supposed to be one on the letter. Lance grabbed the letter, glanced at it, and tossed it onto the table. "Uncle Raymond, care to explain?" Raymond's temper flared. "Are you saying I'm supposed to believe everything this person says? You expect there to be an anti-counterfeit mark just because he says so? Is he even qualified to make such a claim?" Kaden stood his ground. "Don't worry. I'm in charge of authorizations here at Johnston Enterprise. I've been handling Raven's authorizations for a while. You can verify it with the company; everything's on record." Teagan opened her mouth but remained silent, her disbelief evident. Turning to Raymond, her face showed shock. How could he have missed something so important? It was a huge blunder, and all his earlier confidence had been for nothing. For a brief moment, panic flickered in Raymond's eyes. He cleared his throat. "I guess the person who made the authorization letter just made an oversight. How could they forget the anti-counterfeit mark? "Forget it. Let's move on." He reached for the letter, trying to salvage the situation. Lance let out a sharp snort, watching as Raymond casually took the letter back. Raymond slid it into his bag, his face betraying no discomfort. It didn't matter. If fabricating the authorization letter didn't work, he had other plans to secure the CEO position. He was prepared to escalate the crisis at Johnston Enterprise to Steven, ensuring Lance would take the blame. And the sight of Virginia in the office? That was something he could use against Lance too. Lance had no idea that one of the main reasons Steven had made him CEO was because of Addison. Raymond had overheard this by accident. Now, Lance brought Virginia into the office. A man and a woman, alone together—he's clearly trying to push Addison out of the picture. If Lance thinks he can abandon Addison and still keep his CEO position, he's surely mistaken. Raymond knew exactly what to say to Steven. If he exaggerated what he had just seen, Lance's position as CEO would be in serious jeopardy.
