The Replacement He Never Wanted
"That's all, no special dietary restrictions," Addison returned the menu to the waiter and gave a small nod. "Understood," the waiter replied with a bow before leaving. Once the door to the private room was shut behind her, Addison didn't hesitate and got straight to the subject. "Do you have the divorce papers?" Lance shook off his confusion, raising an eyebrow, then let out a quiet laugh. "Divorce papers?" "Yes, aren't we meeting today to discuss getting a divorce?" Addison kept her gaze steady as she looked at him. "This has gone on for far too long. I'm not interested in dragging it out any further. "I'm sure Mr. Johnston wouldn't want to spend so much of his time on this matter with me either." Addison's unusually nonchalant tone left Lance momentarily taken aback. For a moment, Lance simply stared at her, his expression blank, before his gaze shifted, growing more intricate as he studied her. After a pause, a playful smirk tugged at his lips, and he spoke in a low, teasing tone. "How do you know I'm not willing? Maybe I'd be happy to drag this out with you." There were too many unanswered questions surrounding Addison. She started off as Dr. Nancy's assistant, then was ceremoniously welcomed into the Daves Residence by bodyguards in full view of him and Virginia, and finally, her choices in dishes that strikingly matched Harvey's preferences ... Every little detail about Addison left him stunned. It was impossible not to wonder what other secrets she might be concealing. At this point, Lance couldn't simply walk away. He was determined to unravel everything, piece by piece. Besides, Addison's identity as Dr. Nancy's assistant could be a significant advantage for Johnston Enterprise. For the future of Johnston Enterprise, letting Addison go was not an option he could easily consider. Addison's eyes widened in surprise. "What are you trying to say? "Even if you're willing to drag this out with me, I'm not. It's better if we part ways peacefully—I don't want things to end in a nasty fallout." Addison worked hard to keep her tone steady, though her frustration was evident. Lance's words were driving her to the brink of madness, and the thought of maintaining any connection with him was the last thing she wanted. Lance, seemingly oblivious to the storm brewing within Addison, gracefully picked up the teapot from the table and poured her half a cup of tea. Addison glanced at the steaming tea before her with a trace of annoyance—drinking tea was the last thing on her mind. "Are you aware of Grandpa's current condition? "His health is declining rapidly. The doctor estimates he only has about a month left ... " Placing the teapot back down, Lance abruptly shifted the conversation. Lance's usual playful demeanor was nowhere to be seen; his expression was grave, and his tone carried a weighty solemnity. Why had he suddenly brought this up? The implication was unmistakable. "He's still in the ICU, barely holding on. Once this month is over, we'll never have the chance to see him again." His voice was steady but deliberate, his gaze locked onto Addison's face, searching intently for any flicker of emotion. Addison's expression remained composed, with only a trace of indifference in her eyes. It was as if the person Lance referred to had no significance to her whatsoever. "You ... " Lance's words faltered as he took in her cold demeanor. Her lack of emotion made it seem as if there was no trace of humanity left in her. He pressed on, "We have consulted nearly every doctor in Halton, but none of them can help with Grandpa's condition. "The doctors have recommended that only the Divine Healer can treat this illness." Addison listened in silence, her face betraying no emotion, not even a flicker of reaction. When the name "Divine Healer" was mentioned, there wasn't even a twitch of her eyelid. She appeared as though she were listening to an unfamiliar person speak. Lance felt a pulse in his forehead, exhaling sharply. "Aren't you going to say anything?" Addison had been living at Johnston Residence for such a long time—how could she feel nothing for Grandpa? How could she be so cold and unfeeling? Was her heart made of stone? Virginia, with her compassionate nature, would surely take this news to heart, seeing it as something significant. If she were able to help, she would go to great lengths to do so, unlike Addison, who remained indifferent. "What?" Addison was momentarily surprised by Lance's question, as though she hadn't anticipated him asking if she had anything to say. Lance fought to control his frustration and repeated his question. "I'm asking you—Grandpa's illness is so critical, don't you have anything to say?""I ... " She truly had nothing to respond with. Addison knew the potency of the medicine Virgina had used. And based on how Steven was doing, it was clear that Virginia had definitely gone all out.
