The Replacement He Never Wanted
Virginia stood in front of Lance's office, a satisfied smile playing on her lips as she came to deliver some treats to him. But when she walked in, she was greeted with an unexpected scene. The sight of Addison taking a silent blow stirred an oddly satisfying feeling within her. Her heart skipped a beat when the front desk called up to the CEO's office. She feared that Lance might still harbor some tenderness for Addison, possibly giving her false hope. But to her surprise, Addison was flatly rejected by Lance. Virginia couldn't contain her joy. It seems that Addison has been completely erased from Lance's heart! Addison turned her head at the sound of her name, her gaze locking with a familiar face. Not her again—Virginia? Addison's eyes traveled from Virginia's face to the elegant wooden box she was holding, clearly filled with treats. Virginia is here to bring Lance snacks? After all the harsh words she'd spoken the other day, after proving her point with undeniable evidence, the only thing left was to slap Lance in the face. Yet just a few days later, she was here again, smiling as if nothing had happened. Is she really this resilient? Addison found herself wondering if the tearful woman from the other day was truly Virginia. "Addison, what brings you here? Why don't you head upstairs?" Virginia asked, feigning surprise. Addison raised an eyebrow. "I'm just delivering something." Virginia smiled brightly, her eyes sparkling. "Oh, delivering something? Why don't you go to his office?" Addison narrowed her eyes, refusing to be baited. She glared at Virginia. "Wasn't my criticism the other day enough? How can you still show up here like this? Aren't you worried Lance might throw you out?" Virginia's grin only grew wider, her tone taking on an air of superiority, "Oh, you think Lance would throw me out?" She paused for a moment, her gaze shifting from mockery to something almost pitying. "I actually overheard Lance telling you to leave just now." Addison worked so hard to shatter my image in Lance's eyes, yet it seems his affection for me is far stronger than I've ever imagined!Years of emotional connection with Lance can't possibly crumble so easily. It isn't comparable to Addison's brief three years with him. Moreover, Addison is just a placeholder after I went abroad—how could a mere stand-in ever hope to compete for his love? It's a foolish fantasy. A substitute should know their place, not constantly chase after a man's affection. Trying to steal the main character's love or even replace the original is a delusion! Addison couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and frustration as she watched Virginia's smugness. Clearly, Virginia wasn't worried about being thrown out by Lance. She seemed more confident than ever before, mocking Addison without a hint of hesitation. There's only one explanation: Lance has forgiven her? Does he truly love Virginia that much? Addison sneered. Is love really enough to blind someone's judgment? The front desk receptionist, who had been observing the two women quietly, remained unfazed, her eyes cold. Just as Virginia was about to speak again, the receptionist interrupted with a sharp tone, "Ladies, if you're going to argue, take it outside. Otherwise, I'll call security." Both women were competing for Lance's attention. The woman with the snacks was attractive, though she couldn't quite match the allure of the other one. Still, she was clearly a looker. This wasn't the first time women had fought over Lance in the lobby, but they had all been tossed out by security. Virginia, hearing the receptionist's bold words, turned to her with a cold glare. "You're the front desk worker at Johnston Enterprises? "Is this how you treat guests? You can leave now—Johnston Enterprises doesn't need employees like you." Addison raised an eyebrow, surprised at how Virginia was already acting like the lady of the Johnston family, even without a ring on her finger. The receptionist, hearing Virginia's words, chuckled dismissively. "Who do you think you are, firing me?" Virginia didn't engage in any further banter. Instead, she pulled out her phone and dialed Lance's number, holding it up for the receptionist to see. "Look closely. This is Mr. Johnston's number." The receptionist wasn't impressed, giving her a disdainful look. Is this woman really delusional? It's getting out of hand. The phone rang through, and Virginia made sure to put it on speaker. She wanted the receptionist to hear it clearly, wanted the security at the door to hear, and most importantly, wanted Addison to realize just where she stood in Lance's heart. "Virginia?" came Lance's deep voice on the other end. "Lance, I'm downstairs. I recently learned to make some simple pastries and brought them to you." Virginia cooed, sounding sweet as honey. "You're downstairs? In the future, just have Francesca make the pastries. No need to go through all this trouble," Lance's voice came through, warm but tired, yet still patient. Virginia's eyes gleamed with triumph as she glanced at the front desk receptionist, then continued, "I may not be able to help with work, but at least I can bring you some snacks to make your day easier. It's just a small gesture from me ... " The receptionist's eyes widened in shock. Does this woman really know Mr. Johnston? His voice sounds so affectionate. Could she be his girlfriend? Lance chuckled lightly. "Alright, bring them up. Should I send Isaac down to get you?" "I think ... it's better if Isaac comes to get me. The front desk receptionist is really tough on me and even mocks me." The receptionist's face turned pale as a ghost. "Lance, is this how your employees treat guests?" Virginia's voice was laced with concern. "I know I shouldn't interfere, but this kind of attitude could damage Johnston Enterprises' reputation." "Is that so?" Lance's tone shifted, his brow furrowing. "If it were up to me, I'd say someone like that doesn't belong at Johnston Enterprises ... " Virginia continued, her words dripping with meaning. "I understand. I'll have someone look into this front desk receptionist's behavior. If it's true, Johnston Enterprises won't tolerate it." The receptionist, hearing the CEO's lack of immediate dismissal, couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope, though she dared not show it. She was still nervous, afraid of angering Virginia even more.Virginia appeared unsure, as though she had more to say but couldn't quite put it into words. Her dissatisfaction with the answer was clear. Addison noticed the slight change in Virginia's expression, the brief flash of something behind her eyes after hearing the reply. Addison raised an eyebrow, secretly amused by the situation. Virginia actually thinks that by merely bringing it up, Lance would immediately fire the receiptionist. It's obvious that Virginia doesn't fully understand how Lance works. Though she might have a good handle on Lance's personal life and habits, she seemed completely unaware of his work ethic. Lance was someone who strictly separated his personal and professional worlds. Virginia, with her tendency to push boundaries and act impulsively, was the type who could unknowingly annoy Lance in ways she wouldn't even realize. "I'll have Isaac meet you downstairs," the man said, ending the call before Virginia could respond. Her words were left unsaid, trapped in her throat. Her face, no longer holding the smugness from before, shifted into discomfort as she lowered her phone. The earlier glint of satisfaction was gone from her eyes, but she still cleared her throat and spoke with a quiet, unspoken arrogance. "Did you hear that? Once Lance figures out your work performance, you'll be in for it." She turned to Addison, a mocking smile twisting her lips. "Sorry, Addison, but Lance made it clear on the phone—he doesn't want you up there. While I'd love to take you with me, I can't go against Lance's wishes. "But I do admire your persistence. Even after Lance rejected you, you still came crawling back. You must really love him, don't you?" Addison's disgust was palpable at Virginia's words. Virginia continued, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "Then again, someone like you, a poor orphan with no connections, will probably only ever meet a man as wealthy and powerful as Lance once in your lifetime. No wonder you cling to him so desperately." Isaac, hurrying down from upstairs, overheard that final jab.
