The Replacement He Never Wanted
After Addison spoke, she nervously glanced at Matthew, still unsure if he had calmed down. She hadn't told him she was leaving earlier that morning, and the oversight had led to Matthew scolding everyone at the Daves, especially Leon. With that in mind, Addison couldn't help but look at Leon with sympathy. Compared to me, Uncle Leon is truly the innocent one. However, the situation wasn't as bad as she had anticipated. Instead of staying upset, Matthew broke into a grin, waving at Addison. "Come here, sweetie, let me take a good look at you ... " "Uh ... " Addison blinked in surprise, not expecting her grandfather's mood to shift so quickly. Just moments ago, he had been angry, and now he was all smiles. She hesitated, unsure whether to approach. After all, the shards of broken ceramic on the floor weren't exactly inviting. Just seeing the mess made Addison imagine how tense things must've been a few minutes earlier. Noticing her hesitation, Leon quickly spoke up, encouraging her to move closer. "What's the matter? Has it been so long since you've been home that you're nervous around your grandpa? "Are you still worried that he's upset with you?" Addison gave a hesitant nod. "Don't worry. The second your grandpa saw you, all his anger vanished!" Leon gently took her arm and guided her forward, speaking in a calm and reassuring voice. "Go ahead, let your grandpa see you properly!" It didn't matter what happened—just showing up in front of Matthew was enough to make him smile. Leon knew that for sure. Addison took a cautious step forward, moving closer to Matthew. "Grandpa ... " she said softly, her voice hesitant. Matthew reached out and took his granddaughter's hand. "Addy, since you're back in Kreshill, why don't you stay a little longer?"I'm getting old, and all I really want is for the family to be together. "Your father is always traveling for work, barely home for years at a time. "Most of the time, the big house at the Daves is just you and Uncle Leon keeping me company." Matthew sighed dramatically, casting a disapproving glance at Leon. "Uncle Leon is always around, making noise, driving me crazy. It's enough to give me a headache ... Oh, poor old me." Matthew clutched his chest, his expression exaggerated in mock grievance, despite his age. There was a playful note to his complaint. Leon wasn't having it. He threw his head back with a defiant look. "Dad, you really are something! "I'm your son, and even with all my work, I still manage to visit you. And you're still unhappy? Anyone else would be secretly pleased with that! "Who else would complain when treated so well?" Matthew snorted, shaking his head. "Secretly pleased?" He waved his hand dismissively. "Go on, don't bother me now."You're always wandering around the Daves Residence, making so much noise. I can't even focus on brewing my herbal medicine ... " Matthew winced dramatically, as if the headache were real. Leon rolled his eyes. "Fine, if that's how it is, I won't come to the Daves anymore," Leon said with a sarcastic tone, though a small grin tugged at his lips as he glanced at Matthew. "Just don't come crying to me when you're all alone here, and there's no one to hand you a tissue when you need it!" Though Leon was teasing, the amusement on his face was impossible to hide. Matthew, for his part, looked at Leon with a helpless grin, rubbing his chin as he chuckled. Addison quietly observed the playful exchange between the older man and the younger one. Their teasing paused for a brief moment, but then both of them erupted into laughter. The warmth of the scene made Addison smile, her eyes lighting up with a glint of amusement. It wasn't until she was back at the Daves Residence that she truly felt the sense of family. Even if she did nothing, just sitting and watching her relatives bicker and laugh together filled her with a deep, quiet happiness. "I'll stay in Kreshill a little longer," Addison said softly, her voice full of affection. "I'll spend time with you, Grandpa." She gently placed her hand on Matthew's shoulders and began massaging him, her palm moving rhythmically, easing the tension in his muscles and giving him a soothing sense of comfort. As her fingers worked on his stiff back, Matthew's serious expression slowly melted away, replaced by a warm, contented smile. His usual stern demeanor faded, leaving behind an undeniable sense of peace. He leaned back in his chair, relaxing into the comfort, when a thought suddenly struck him. He motioned for Addison to stop. "Addy ... when you came to Kreshill, the Johnstons didn't give you any trouble, did they? "If they did, you'd better let me know. I'll take care of it." Years ago, when Addison had insisted on marrying into the Johnstons family, the entire Daves family had been deeply reluctant about it. But now that so much time had passed and it was a done deal, Matthew had no choice but to swallow his discomfort and come to terms with it. After all, Addison was his granddaughter. No matter how frustrating her actions might be, what could the Daves family do about it? They could only spoil her, as they always had. However, if the Johnstons thought they could leverage their family connection to gain an advantage, Matthew wasn't about to let that happen. Addison shook her head with a confident smile. "Don't worry, Grandpa. I'm not that easy to push around. The Johnstons wouldn't dare." "Good." Matthew nodded, satisfied. "By the way, that kid from the Johnstons ... what's his name again?" He furrowed his brows, trying to recall. "Lance," Leon piped up from the side. "Right, Lance. Has he mentioned anything about when you're going back?" Leon had previously told him that Lance was difficult and temperamental, known for his overbearing attitude. Matthew couldn't quite remember all the details, but it was clear that Lance wasn't exactly well-liked.If Addison wanted to return to Kreshill, he was sure that kid might try to stop her. Although the Daves could easily handle Lance if he caused trouble, Addison clearly had strong feelings for him. She had loved him so much that it had driven her to marry into the Johnstons years ago. Matthew understood that if he interfered, it might hurt Addison, and he would never do anything to cause her pain. He adored her more than anything else. Matthew narrowed his eyes, thinking of a way to solve the issue without upsetting Addison. "If things get really bad, we have plenty of businesses here in Kreshill. Let Lance choose one." The Daves had business operations all over the country, but the ones in Kreshill were the most prestigious. Any of them would be worth far more than all of Johnston Enterprises combined. If the Johnstons could secure even one, they would consider themselves fortunate. "Once he picks one, we can have Lance move to Kreshill. That way, it'll be more convenient for you to come to visit." Matthew spoke as if it were no big deal, just another simple idea. Addison froze. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at him. "Grandpa ... are you serious?" Handing over the Daves' business in Kreshill to the Johnstons? Surely, Grandpa is just kidding.
