The Replacement He Never Wanted
"You don't know her?" Addison asked, locking eyes with Leon, waiting for his reply. "I've heard the name before, but no one by that name is in the Daves family," Leon replied, his brow furrowing in confusion. "You've heard the name?" Addison repeated, her mind turning. If he's heard of her, maybe Virginia wasn't lying after all. "Wait." Leon suddenly stopped. "I just remembered. The last time we visited the Johnstons' private hospital, there was a young woman outside Mr. Steven's room. She goes by Virginia, but someone called her Angel." Addison raised an eyebrow in recognition. "I remember her because her nickname was the same as yours—it stuck with me. She was fair-skinned and seemed pleasant enough," Leon added, squinting as he tried to recall the details. Addison smiled at Leon's recollection. "You're right, that girl was Virginia." Leon grinned proudly. "Guess I'm not getting old after all—my memory's still sharp." Addison smiled back at him."So, this Virginia claims to be from the Daves?" Leon asked, his tone turning more serious. "Yes." "That's odd. There's no one by that name in our Daves circle." Addison raised an eyebrow, her mind turning. Could Virginia be lying? One might bend the truth about trivial things, but when it comes to the Daves family name, that's something else. If Virginia is using our name to deceive others, it can really damage our reputation. "Maybe she's from a side branch of the Daves family?" Leon suggested, considering the possibility. While the main Daves group wasn't large, the side branch added many more people to the mix. "That ... could be possible." Addison agreed, nodding. "But there are so many people in the side branch, I wouldn't remember all of them." Addison thought for a moment, her mind still working through the situation. "But why are you asking about this girl?" Leon asked, now noticing his niece's serious tone. "What's really going on?" Addison fluttered her lashes, trying to act casual. "Ah, she's connected to Georgina. That's why I asked." She was planning to go to the Daves Residence to dig into Virginia's real identity later. "Connected to Georgina?" Leon's eyebrows rose. He knew his niece well enough to sense there was more to the story. "Did she get involved in the conference too?" he asked, his eyes sharp. Addison hesitated briefly before admitting, "Yes, there is a connection, but I'm still figuring out how deeply she's involved." Leon studied her for a moment, noticing the calm resolve in her expression. Her eyes were steady, as if nothing could shake her. When she looked like this, Leon knew Addison could handle whatever came her way. He gave her a reassuring nod. "If you need anything, just tell me," he said, giving her shoulder a gentle pat. ... After nearly a full night spent on a plane, Lance and Virginia finally arrived in Kreshill just as the first light of dawn touched the sky.Virginia stumbled off the plane, groggy and disoriented, her two bodyguards following behind, carrying her luggage. She slowly opened her eyes, taking in the scene around her. In the distance, the early morning light bathed the sky in a soft, golden glow. Virginia turned to Lance, exclaiming. "Lance, look! The sky is so beautiful!" Lance followed the direction of her finger, his dark eyes reflecting the brilliant colors of the sunrise. He gave a small nod, his lips barely moving. "Should we take a moment to rest here?" Virginia asked, sensing the peaceful, almost romantic atmosphere that felt perfect for a brief break. But Lance frowned. "Let's go." He was focused, determined to find the Daves and get to the heart of the matter as quickly as possible. There was no time to waste if they were going to help Steven—his condition was urgent. The time left was slipping away, and he couldn't afford to waste another second. Virginia massaged her stiff legs, silently following behind him. Does Lance not feel tired? We've been on a flight all night to get to Kreshill, and even if he isn't exhausted, I certainly am! It's like he doesn't care about how uncomfortable I am ... Her thoughts drifted back to the moments she and Lance had shared before. The city streets had been packed with traffic, cars weaving through the lanes. From the highest point of the city, the river glittered in the light. She and Lance had stood together, side by side, watching the sunset. Back then, everything felt so sweet between us. When I was tired, he looked after me with such thoughtfulness; when I was upset, he showered me with affection ... But now ... Virginia shook her head. It was only now that she truly understood. Love and indifference were, in many ways, the same thing. Both love and indifference revealed themselves in the smallest of gestures. She walked behind Lance, head lowered in quiet thought, when suddenly, he stopped. Distracted, she bumped into him. She quickly placed a hand to her forehead, letting out a small gasp. Turning around, Lance's eyes met hers. All she could see from where she stood was the broadness of his shoulders and his handsome face. Could it be that Lance finally heard my silent thoughts and is beginning to care about my exhaustion? Is he about to let me rest? "Lance ... are you ... " A glimmer of hope flickered inside her. Lance's expression was unreadable as he spoke. "You lead the way." Before she could fully process his words, a royal blue sports car screeched to a stop in front of them. The driver got out and gave a slight bow. "Mr. Johnston, the car's ready for you." Lance gave a brief, disinterested nod before turning to Virginia. Virginia stood frozen, speechless. "Oh ... " She had thought Lance might finally be showing some consideration. "Is something wrong?" Lance raised an eyebrow, his face showing mild confusion at her reaction. She forced a smile and shook her head. "No, nothing's wrong." The car drove through the city, moving from the early morning glow to the scorching midday heat, from the busy downtown to the quieter outskirts. As they moved further away, the number of people around dwindled. "Are you sure this is the right way?" Lance's voice remained calm, but a hint of tension had crept into his tone as he glanced out the window. The surroundings were growing emptier by the minute. Virginia glanced around, feeling a sense of unease. "It should be ... I think." The truth was, she had only visited this place a few times in her youth and was now relying solely on her memory to guide them. Seeing there were fewer and fewer people around, she felt more and more sunure, but she did her best to keep a composed exterior. Lance noticed her growing unease. Without saying a word, he subtly tightened his grip on the seat, his fingers curling into a fist, veins faintly visible. His quiet presence seemed to press on her, making her feel even more nervous under his watchful gaze. They drove on for another 30 minutes, and just when Virginia began to question her bearings, a huge building appeared in the distance. It was enormous. The first thing that caught her eye was the gleaming golden roof tiles. The structure stretched out, low and sprawling, its size only more impressive in the midday sun. "We're here! We've made it!" Virginia's face lit up with excitement. She was relieved to see that they hadn't gone off course. The building is exactly as I remembered it! Lance looked up, his gaze growing more intense. Even someone as composed as he was had never seen a building this grand. This wasn't just a home; it could easily be a tourist destination. Kreshill's hidden rich family truly lives up to its reputation ... The car stopped smoothly at the entrance of the building. As they were about to exit, Virginia's eyes landed on a figure she knew all too well. She instinctively squinted, her heart skipping a beat. Near the entrance of the Daves Residence stood a woman. How could she not recognize her? It was Addison! Even if Addison underwent plastic surgery, Virginia would still recognize that figure. Why is she here?
