The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 305 Torn Allegiances

Virginia was frightened by the cold glare directed at her. She instinctively shifted closer to Lance as if seeking his protection. Usually, she wasn't afraid of Marilyn. At most, she found the woman annoying. Virginia knew that if she wanted to marry the Johnstons, Marilyn was an obstacle she had to overcome. Marriage would be impossible if Marilyn disapproved of her, no matter how much she pleased Lance. What made things worse was that Lance no longer seemed to favor her as much as he once did. "Why did you bring her here?" Marilyn's gaze hardened when it fell on Virginia, her eyes filled with fury. She abruptly sat up from the bed, ready to pounce on Virginia to drive her out of the Johnston residence. "Ah, Lance, help me!" Virginia, terrified, darted behind Lance for cover. Though Lance instinctively resisted her attempts to hide behind him, he couldn't ignore the aggressive posture his mother was adopting. He feared she might actually hurt Virginia. Frowning, he raised a hand to block Marilyn. "Mom, please calm down." Weak from the stress of caring for Steven, Marilyn couldn't match her son's strength. Despite struggling, she was quickly restrained. Her hands flailed up and down, trying to grab onto Virginia's clothes and drag her out. "Who told you to bring her here? The Johnstons don't welcome her. Get out. I want you out. Hurry up and leave!" Marilyn shouted loudly while swinging her arms. Virginia became even more frightened, her tears almost spilling from the shock of Marilyn's actions. She gripped the corner of Lance's shirt tightly, the man's custom-tailored suit now a mess, ruined by her trembling hands as she unknowingly clutched it in fear. "Lance, what's wrong with Marilyn today? Did she forget to retake her medication?" Virginia whispered in a frightened voice but secretly sneered in her heart. Marilyn's behavior was so frantic and irrational that she no longer seemed like a normal person.Could it be that the situation with Steven had driven her to madness? Virginia hadn't expected things to unfold this way, but as she thought about it, she figured it might be for the best. If Marilyn indeed went insane, it would be even better for her. Once Steven was gone and Marilyn completely lost it, who could stop her from marrying into the Johnstons? No one. As soon as Virginia thought this, the fear she had just felt vanished without a trace, replaced by a subtle sense of anticipation and excitement. On the other side, Lance was barely holding Marilyn back, but with her frantic struggles, he could only control the force he used to avoid hurting her. He wouldn't be able to stop her if he was too gentle. If he was too forceful, he would lose his temper. "Lance, I really think Marilyn isn't herself right now," Virginia whispered from behind him. Upon hearing her, Lance frowned instinctively. In fact, he had been suspicious of Marilyn's behavior, too. In his mind, Marilyn had always been the elegant lady of the—graceful, refined, and dignified. Wherever she went, people praised her manners and her poise. He had never seen her like this before. "Mom, did you take your medicine today? Maybe you haven't taken it? Let me help you get your medicine." Lance tried to coax her gently. But Marilyn wouldn't listen; her only focus was pushing Virginia out. "As long as I'm alive, that woman is never stepping foot into the Johnstons!" With those words, she lunged forward again, her perfectly styled hair starting to come undone. Virginia recoiled in fear. Lance seemed to have run out of patience. He let out a heavy sigh, forcing Marilyn back to the bed with one firm motion. Marilyn struggled furiously. "My illness is physical, not mental! I'm fine in the head! I said get this woman out of here. Hurry up and take her away!"Lance placed his palm firmly on Marilyn's shoulder, holding her down with force so she couldn't move. Then, he raised his voice, "Where's Francesca? Call her here now!" The servants hurried to lower their heads and scurry off to find Francesca. It wasn't long before Francesca, wearing an apron, rushed upstairs. "Mr. Johnston, what happened?" she asked, wiping her hands on her apron as she hurriedly approached. Before she could finish speaking, she saw Lance pinning Marilyn to the bed. "This ... What are you doing, Mr. Johnston?" Francesca immediately ran to Marilyn, gently pushing Lance aside to shield her. "You! How could you do this to the madam? Mrs. Marilyn has been in a bad condition recently. You can't treat her like this!" Lance stood straight, ignoring Francesca's words. He looked down at her and asked coldly, "Has Mom taken her medicine today?" "Yes, yes, she takes it every day!" Francesca quickly answered, clearly afraid Lance would get any angrier. Lance frowned. "Then why is she acting like this? Why is she in such a state?" Virginia peeked out from behind Lance, her eyes silently watching Marilyn, whose clothes were now in disarray. Her large, grape-like eyes hinted at scheming thoughts. When Francesca she heard Lance's question, she immediately shouted. "It's all because the madam has been taking care of the Johnstons! Mr. Johnston, you've been away for weeks, barely coming home, and the entire house has been on her shoulders! "Not to mention Mr. Steven's condition, he ... " She stopped midway, not wanting to continue, then changed the subject. "Mrs. Marilyn has barely slept these past few days taking care of Mr. Steven! "How can you treat her like this? You're hurting her feelings!" Tears flowed as Francesca spoke.Lance said nothing. Feeling a little guilty, he changed the subject. "Where is Grandpa now?" "Mr. Steven is ... " Before Francesca could finish, Marilyn's voice cut through the silence once more, loud and completely lacking the composure she once had. "Send Virginia out! Only then will you be able to see your grandfather! "Do you not remember how your grandfather treated her before he fell ill? The only one he acknowledged as your wife is Addison! "Bringing this woman into the Johnstons. How can you face your grandfather?" Marilyn's eyes, sharp like an eagle's, fixed on Virginia as she spoke with venom. Lance's face darkened. But the words he had promised Steven came rushing back to him. When his position as CEO was threatened, he promised Steven that he wouldn't divorce Addison. Now, he felt guilty. As his gaze met Marilyn's, the guilt only deepened. Moreover, with Steven's critical condition, this wasn't the time to argue with Marilyn. Lance turned to Virginia. "Virginia, you ... " Virginia widened her eyes, a sense of dread flooding her chest. "Lance, are you going to abandon me?" She looked up at him, her eyes full of pleading. "It's already too late. "Lance, you left me once in Preigh, and now will you abandon me again?" Lance's throat tightened, his hesitation apparent. But after a moment, his voice turned hoarse. "I'll have the driver take you back to the apartment." After speaking, he took out his phone and dialed the driver. Virginia stood frozen in shock. Was he really abandoning her for this insane woman? It was one thing for Addison, but now, with Marilyn going crazy, too, was he really going to leave her?
