The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 283 Promise

Leon's face drained of color when he heard the doctor's words. "What do you mean it's not looking good? You have to be clearer!" His voice trembled with disbelief. The doctor didn't respond right away, simply fixing his gaze on Leon. There was something unspoken in his eyes—an emotion that was hard to place. For a moment, Leon felt a sinking feeling. As a doctor himself, he had already feared the worst when he saw Angel unconscious. But he hadn't wanted to face the truth. He had been hoping—maybe even convincing himself—that things might turn out better. Maybe he just didn't know enough to deal with this matter. There was still hope. There must be. Until the tests confirmed otherwise, he told himself, things weren't hopeless. But when the doctor confirmed what he already feared, it shattered that fragile hope. "So ... do you think you can save her?" Leon's voice was shaky, and he almost regretted asking. He might be a doctor, but every doctor had their specialties. In areas outside his knowledge, he had no real answers. He had placed his trust in this doctor. The doctor hesitated, his discomfort palpable. Lance stood quietly nearby. After the initial shock, his worry had given way to calm. He knew worrying wouldn't help now. The priority was getting Addison the care she needed. Lance studied the doctor carefully, his expression sharp. He noticed the doctor's slight, nervous swallowing. "I ... I'm not certain," the doctor confessed.Without a moment's hesitation, Lance spoke in a steady voice. "Take her to Central Hospital. The one in Preigh. "There's a doctor I trust there who specializes in this type of situation." Leon looked at Lance, trying to process the suggestion. Lance's demeanor was calm, almost indifferent. He didn't seem the least bit worried. "It's the best option we have," Lance added, his words precise. As he finished speaking, he walked toward Leon, stopping beside Addison's bed under the man's watchful eyes. "Central Hospital?" Leon repeated the name, almost as if testing it in his mind. A moment later, he shook his head, still unsure. The Daves was notorious for only seeking medical care at their own hospital. They had no interest in smaller clinics. It wasn't surprising. The Daves were the most prestigious medical family in the country. While they had initially built their reputation in holistic medicine, they had made significant advancements in modern medicine too. Their main focus was now on merging holistic treatments with modern science—a field Addison had been dedicated to researching. In terms of medical expertise, there was no family that could rival the Daves. That's why the hospitals owned by the Daves were considered the finest in the nation. Leon wouldn't trust any other facility, especially not one he hadn't heard of. Lance saw Leon's head shake and assumed he didn't believe him. He didn't think Leon would trust that he knew experts from Central Hospital. With an assured tone, Lance took out his phone. "I have the expert's number right here. If you don't believe me, I can make the call right now." Leon didn't even glance up. He simply refused."Spare me. I'll find another way." Lance frowned at Leon's stubbornness. "You don't have any other options." Leon ignored him. "Time is not on Addison's side. She can't afford any delays. "Every second counts. It could cost her life." Leon was silent. The tension in the air grew thicker. After a long moment, Leon seemed to reach a decision. He paused briefly, then gripped the bed's armrest tightly. "I'll do it myself." His voice broke the silence, low but firm. It was clear he had carefully thought through his choice. The trio of doctors were stunned. "You're going to do it yourself?" they asked in unison. They seemed both surprised and nervous. Leon nodded. "Get ready. I need your help." Time was running out. Leon understood the urgency. Without another word, he moved swiftly to the back of the car to change into surgical scrubs. The doctors followed, but their unease was palpable. When they saw Leon actually preparing to wear the surgical gear, their anxiety grew even more evident. "Uh ... we lent the equipment for this surgery to the Hailtons a while ago, and they haven't returned it to us. "So ... you might not be able to perform the surgery today," the doctor said, his voice shaky. "You what?" Leon asked, his anger rising sharply. "L-Lent the equipment to the Hamiltons," the doctor stammered, his gaze dropping to the floor. The Daves had strict protocols. No equipment in this vehicle was to be lent out, but the Hamiltons had offered a lot ... The doctor had given in to temptation, going against his better judgment. He never imagined an emergency like this would happen. "Who said you could do that? You ought to know the family's rules!" Leon's voice was cold, full of fury, as though he wanted to throw the doctor out of the car. The doctor lowered his head, beads of sweat gathering on his forehead "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry ... " he repeated. Leon's anger surged. His vision blurred, and a ringing filled his ears. Sensing the tension, the doctor carefully glanced up at him. "Maybe ... you should go to Central Hospital," he suggested softly. "It's not far—only about a ten-minute drive." Having worked with the Daves for so long, the doctor knew the woman on the bed well. She was their only daughter, precious and protected like a gem. If she died here, he would never be able to make up for it. "And the doctors at Central Hospital are specialists in this field ... We could take her there first ... " Lance, who had been about to step out of the car to give Leon space for the surgery, spoke up. "I know the way. I can drive," he said, his voice firm. "Addison is my wife. I won't let anything happen to her." Determination filled his voice. Leon hesitated, or perhaps he realized there was no other choice. He sighed deeply. "Alright. Let's go to Central Hospital." ... Georgina stood outside the car, about to make her decision to confess, when she saw two doctors hurriedly exit the vehicle. They quickly grabbed the items from outside and rushed back inside.Moments later, the engine roared to life, and the car looked ready to leave. Georgina froze, confused. What was going on? Were they leaving? Virginia, standing nearby, watched as the car's engine started. Her face turned pale. Lance was still inside the car! Where were they going? Was he really going to leave her alone here, in this unfamiliar place, just for Addison? Virginia could feel her anger boiling up, her chest tightening with fury.
