The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 277 Deceive

Georgina's arrival instantly alleviated Virginia's sense of panic. Even the physical discomfort she was experiencing seemed to lessen significantly. She recalled how she had cleverly pinned the responsibility for locking Addison in the changing room on Georgina. To Addison, being trapped in that cold, expansive room was entirely Georgina's doing. Since she had remained out of sight, there was naturally no suspicion directed at her, and Addison would not have any reason to suspect her directly. Any investigation by Addison would likely implicate Georgina instead. This realization brought Virginia considerable relief. Picking up where she had left off, Virginia urgently continued, "These people are looking for Addison, who seems to have vanished." Although she had shifted the blame onto Georgina, this eased Virginia's anxiety significantly. However, Virginia did not want the Daves to be too harsh on Georgina. After all, Georgina was her primary ally now, her connection to significant support. If Georgina were compromised, Virginia would lose her standing in the Johnston household. It was crucial to persuade Georgina to accept the blame and offer an apology quickly. Georgina, taken aback by Virginia's revelation, was speechless, her eyes wide with shock. "Is that true?" Are these people really causing such a commotion just to find Addison? Could Addison be connected to the Daves family? That seemed unlikely. "Besides Addison, who else do you think they could be looking for?" Virginia whispered intensely, emphasizing each word. Before Georgina could respond, Virginia interjected with certainty, "There's no other possibility! "They must be searching for Addison!" Georgina paused briefly, then lightly shook her head, muttering to herself, "No, no, that can't be right." This was Kreshill—the heart of the Daves' influence. Addison was from Halton; what possible connection could she have with the Daves? Having grown up in Kreshill, Georgina was well-acquainted with the major families there but had never heard of any ties between the Daves and someone like Addison. As Georgina pondered, the more she thought, the more implausible it seemed. The initial shock on her face gradually faded. "It's improbable that they're looking for Addison," she concluded, her tone reflecting a firm disbelief. Yet Virginia was persistent. "Have you seen the person leading those bodyguards?" Georgina nodded. "I recognize him." She knew Leon. "Addison knows that gentleman! They share a deep connection." Virginia elaborated further. "If Addison could persuade him to come to treat Steven, their relationship must be quite close." A doctor from the Daves is not someone you can simply call upon. Lance had exhausted all his connections attempting to secure the Daves' doctor without success. Yet Addison had managed to summon Dr. Daves quite easily—there must be a unique relationship there, Virginia argued. Georgina responded nonchalantly, "So what?" She was aware of Addison's acquaintance with Leon. During a previous medical conference where her father had sent her to deliver documents, she had observed Addison alongside Leon, their interaction so close that they could have been mistaken for family at first glance. Yet, for Georgina, this observation was not particularly revelatory. Addison could never be part of the Daves. Noticing Georgina's indifferent expression, Virginia felt a surge of frustration. Why can't Georgina see what's so obvious to her? She had laid out all the details; why couldn't she just believe it? Virginia clenched her teeth, determined to make her point clearer. "Addison's identity is more complex than we think!" she insisted. "Do you know where Addison lives?" Georgina shook her head. "Where does she live?" "She resides in Pendomium Heights, the most expensive area in Halton!" Virginia pressed on. "The prices there are beyond what ordinary people can afford, far beyond the reach of someone without substantial means." Georgina found this point slightly amusing and dismissively said, "Is that all? It's just a house, and it's in Halton. Anyone could own it." Virginia grew more agitated. "No, no, no, it's not just any house ... "The point is, the price of this property is astronomical! I guarantee that even here in Kreshill, this price would be considered top-tier ... " Virginia kept talking, her voice filled with urgency. Georgina listened but her mind drifted, detecting something amiss in Virginia's demeanor. Since the conversation started, Virginia had been speaking with great emotion. While she had not made her concerns explicit, Georgina could read a sense of warning in Virginia's facial expressions. It appeared as if she was signaling to her to find a way to escape quickly. There was an underlying nervousness in her voice, suggesting fear—perhaps fear of repercussions from the Daves if they discovered what she had done to Addison. Was Virginia asked her to come clean, confessing to some misdeed? Did Virginia find out what she did to Addison? Yet, Georgina was the one who had manipulated the situation, luring Virginia to the spot under false pretenses. Suspicion crept into Georgina's thoughts.Cutting off Virginia, she asked abruptly, "Do you know what I just did?" Without missing a beat, Virginia responded, "Of course, I do." Georgina was taken aback. "You know?" She had thought her cover was perfect, claiming she was headed to the restroom when in fact she was going to check on Addison. She had believed her deception was flawless, but Virginia's awareness caught her off guard. A flicker of apprehension crossed Georgina's face as she pressed on, hesitating slightly, "So ... you know that I went to find Addison?" Just as she finished, Virginia's gasp of surprise interrupted her, startling Georgina even further. "You went to find Addison just now? "Didn't you say you were going to the bathroom? How did it turn into going to find Addison? "So, is Addison's disappearance connected to you?" Georgina sensed trouble brewing. Virginia didn't know? From her recent actions, it seemed like she was pushing Georgina toward a confession. That was why she feared her actions had been exposed. This was troubling. Virginia had initially believed Georgina had simply gone to the bathroom, but now it appeared she knew the whole story. Georgina was filled with regret. "Ms. Hamilton, do you know where Addison is?" "You should bring her out now! If these people discover Addison on their own, we're doomed!" Virginia said, her expression fraught with anxiety. She was terrified that Georgina might soon be severely dealt with by the bodyguards. Georgina stayed quiet. "Ms. Hamilton, once Addison is found, given her vindictive nature, she will surely expose you!" Virginia warned. "Don't doubt it, I've known Addison long enough to fully grasp her temperament! "She is definitely capable of doing such a thing!" Virginia's somber expression seemed to already seal Georgina's fate. Yet, Georgina remained calm. "I simply escorted Addison to change her clothes; I haven't done anything to harm her. "Why would the Daves be after me?" She had a clear conscience. Seeing that Georgina was not succumbing to her pressure, Virginia continued her gentle persuasion, "Are you absolutely sure you didn't do anything to Addison? Then why hasn't she appeared yet?" Georgina responded almost reflexively, "How would I know ... " Her voice trailed off as a realization dawned on her. Yes, Addison should have finished changing her clothes by now; why hadn't she reappeared? Though she acknowledged that she had taken Addison to a secluded changing room as part of a prank, she had not actually harmed her. Is Addison lost? Is that why she has not returned? If that were the case, and if Addison really was lost, then there must be some link to her actions. She had, albeit indirectly, contributed to the current predicament. Georgina remained motionless, absorbing Virginia's words without altering her stance. Her fingertips felt cool as they intertwined, betraying her internal unease. After a moment, Georgina lowered her gaze, her eyes shadowed with contemplation. She was hesitating. Given Addison's unexplained absence, she recognized that she could not completely disassociate herself from responsibility. Should she confess then?
