The Replacement He Never Wanted
He saw it with his own eyes this time. Lance strode over with his long legs and helped Virginia up, carefully checking her for any injuries as he asked softly, "Virginia, are you okay?" Virginia's heart raced in panic. Why was Lance back already? She awkwardly stood up, trying to maintain her composure. She shook her head and said, "I'm fine." Addison also heard Lance's voice, surprised by his sudden arrival. How could the conference have ended so early? She lowered her gaze, watching the two in front of her. Virginia's fall was almost too perfect—was it intentional or just a coincidence? Addison sneered internally. Lance looked up at Addison, his voice cold. "There's no need for you to keep making things difficult for Virginia." Addison raised an eyebrow at his words. Virginia, having steadied her emotions, quickly took advantage of the situation and clung to the corner of Lance's shirt. In a soft voice, she said, "Lance, I'm fine. You don't have to be so harsh on Addison. She might get hurt." Although Lance's face remained cold, his tone softened slightly after hearing Virginia's words. "I know you don't want a divorce, but you can't take it out on Virginia. Acting like this only makes me despise you more. Do you understand?" "...I don't want a divorce?" Addison let out a sarcastic laugh. Lance spoke again, his eyes flashing with a mix of mockery and disdain. "Showing up at the Johnston Residence today says it all, doesn't it?" Addison found it laughable. She had long stopped bothering to explain. Tyrese stood awkwardly on the side, rubbing his hands together as he carefully spoke up. "Uh, we..." Hearing Tyrese's voice, Lance turned his head. He had been so focused on Virginia's fall that he hadn't even noticed the police officers standing nearby. He furrowed his brows. "What's going on?" Virginia seized the moment to speak. "The police are here investigating Addison for theft." Lance's sudden appearance had been unexpected for her. She decided to use this opportunity to completely humiliate Addison in front of him. Lance's frown deepened. "You stole something?" His gaze was sharp as a blade when he looked at Addison. Addison ignored his piercing stare. Since Virginia wanted to stir up trouble in front of Lance, Addison would give her the stage. "Mr. Sardo, since you asked me to come for this investigation, let's get started." Addison gestured toward Tyrese. Marilyn had already calmed down, and her health didn't seem to be in any immediate danger, so it was time to address the matter at hand. Tyrese, trembling slightly, stepped forward. "Shall we begin?" He glanced over at Lance as if seeking his approval. Lance's expression remained grim, his entire presence exuding a chilling coldness, radiating an intense pressure. His gaze stayed fixed on Addison, ignoring Tyrese entirely. Once again, Addison had disregarded his words. Tyrese, noticing that Lance hadn't nodded or shaken his head, grew increasingly anxious. Sensing the tension, Virginia gently tugged on Lance's arm. She couldn't quite read what he was thinking at the moment. Lance snapped out of his thoughts, his gaze dark and unreadable. He gave a slight nod. "Go ahead and conduct your investigation inside." The group moved indoors. Lana, who had just helped Marilyn lie down, rushed downstairs to pour some water when she heard the commotion. Lance sat on the couch, his body leaned back, legs crossed, exuding an aura of dominance. Tyrese spoke up."Earlier, Mrs. Johnston mentioned that she doesn't recognize the diamond ring in question. Ms. Dolton, do you believe anyone else in the Johnston family might own a similar ring?" Tyrese asked. Hearing that Marilyn had been dragged into the matter, Lance's expression grew even colder. "Mrs. Johnston might be covering for Addison," Virginia said, her gaze filled with a mix of unclear emotions. ... "What do you want, then?" Addison asked coldly, seeing that Virginia wouldn't believe anything she said. "I don't want anything. I just think the person who did something wrong should be punished. It's not about you, don't get me wrong," Virginia replied softly, trying to sound righteous. "Ms. Daves, you said this diamond ring was auctioned by a friend of yours. Do you have any proof?" Tyrese asked. Lance narrowed his eyes, his expression hard to read. Addison figured Keith would have a record of the transaction, so she decided to give him a call. "I believe there is. Mr. Sardo, please give me a moment while I contact my friend." Virginia's eyes filled with disdain. Still, pretending? Are you trying to produce a fake record? Let's see what you come up with. Addison dialed Keith's number. ... "We're sorry, the number you have dialed is currently out of service. Please try again later." Addison was momentarily stunned. She dialed again, but after a short pause, the same message played. "We're sorry, the number you have dialed is currently out of service. Please try again later." Is Keith out hiking in some remote mountains where there's no signal? Why can't I reach him? Lowering the phone, Addison shrugged. "Sorry, I can't reach my friend right now." Virginia's lips curved into a smile. "Why not just admit it? It would be better for you. I know you want to maintain your pride, but now's not the time for that. We won't think any less of you just because you made a mistake.""After all, a diamond ring this valuable—turning yourself in would be in your best interest. Addison, I'm only trying to help you." Addison looked up and gave a cold laugh. Virginia turned to Tyrese. "Mr. Sardo, what do you think?" "Ms. Dolton, without concrete evidence to prove the ring belongs to the Johnstons, we can't make a clear judgment," Tyrese said, rubbing his hands, his tone uncertain. Lance uncrossed his legs and spoke in a low voice, "What kind of diamond ring caused all this commotion at the Johnston Residence?" His impatience was evident. Marilyn should be resting right now, and all this noise at the Johnston Residence was only going to disturb her, worsening her condition. Moreover, he had never allowed Virginia to appear at the Johnston Residence. While he loved Virginia and had promised her a place in his life, that didn't mean she could act against his wishes. It was far too soon for her to show up here. Earlier, he had instinctively helped Virginia up without thinking, but now he realized she had come to the Johnston Residence without his consent. If Marilyn were to suddenly see Virginia here, it would cause a huge emotional stir. Lance felt a growing sense of unease as if things were slipping out of his control. Virginia, on the other hand, was oblivious to Lance's inner turmoil. She pointed toward the sparkling diamond ring in Addison's hand. Lance's gaze shifted to the ring, his expression unreadable. Then he looked at Addison, whose face remained calm but resolute. He had never seen a ring like this at the Johnston Residence before. A pink diamond of such quality simply didn't exist in the country. Marilyn, with her frugal tendencies, would never have traveled overseas just to buy such a ring. Virginia carefully watched Lance's reaction, but his face revealed no anger or surprise upon seeing the ring. Her heart wavered, starting to suspect that Lance might have bought it for Addison. Cautiously, she asked, "Lance, did you buy this ring for Addison?" Lance's tone was impatient as he replied, "I didn't buy it.""This isn't our ring, and my mother didn't buy it. Did you call the police?" Lance asked, his brows furrowed. Virginia looked genuinely shocked. It wasn't the Johnstons' ring? For a moment, she was completely dumbfounded. She had deliberately escalated the situation, even risking Lance's anger by stirring up trouble at the Johnston Residence, all so Marilyn would see it. And now Marilyn had been taken upstairs to rest. Panic surged through Virginia's heart. A mix of fear, confusion, and shock overwhelmed her.
