The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 254 Panic

Lance gritted his teeth and sneered, "So, you're finally admitting it, huh? "And what about living together? No need to explain, is there? It's better to just boldly admit it." Addison could hardly contain his laughter at Lance's aggressive attitude. "Are you sick? Why would I admit to something that isn't true? "Mr. Johnston, is forcing people to admit to things they haven't done your favorite pastime? Don't you think that's ridiculous?" Addison didn't even bother reaching for the glass in his hand, she turned and walked away. If Lance wasn't going to leave, then she would. If she couldn't avoid him, she'd just leave him behind. "Stop." The man's voice came from behind her. "If you claim I'm falsely accusing you, what's your explanation for the leather shoes in the shoe rack by the villa door?" Lance stood behind her, his tall frame casting a long shadow in the quiet moonlight. In the chilly air, his hard features and dark eyes stared at her intently, silently waiting for an answer. Addison stopped in her tracks. Leather shoes? The shoe rack at the villa? She frowned, and in a flash of realization, it seemed like she understood. The shoes must have belonged to her uncle! Lance must have seen them the day he arrived, which led him to mistakenly believe she was living with another man. Addison was momentarily speechless, unsure of what to say. She couldn't exactly tell him the shoes belonged to her uncle, could she? When she married into the Johnstons, she had already claimed to be an only child. Now, suddenly saying she had an uncle would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? Lance definitely wouldn't believe it. Besides, even if he did believe she had an uncle living with her, with his tendency to dig deeper, he'd surely want to know who her uncle was. Then what would she say? How could she explain that? Was she really going to say her uncle was the doctor who treated Steven, Dr. Daves? If she did, wouldn't her identity as young lady of the Daves family be exposed? Addison carefully weighed her options in her mind. No matter how she spun it, it was a lie that couldn't be undone. In the end, she decided it was better to say nothing. She completely abandoned the thought of speaking. She'd rather let Lance misunderstand her than reveal her connection to the Daves family. Seeing Addison stop in her tracks, Lance raised an eyebrow, expecting her to turn around and urgently come up with some explanation. If she was willing to explain properly ... no, more importantly, if her explanation was convincing enough, Lance thought he could probably forgive her to some extent. As he thought this, he watched Addison quietly, waiting for an answer. But her back only paused for a moment before she continued walking, as if she didn't hear his question. Lance was momentarily stunned, unable to believe that Addison hadn't even bothered to offer an explanation. Then, a hint of irritation appeared on his face. Was she completely uninterested in explaining? "Addison," Lance said coldly. He was making it clear that his patience had limits. After today, if she wanted to explain, he would never believe her. Even if she begged him, crying, to explain the situation, it wouldn't affect him. This was her only chance—miss it, and it was gone. Lance believed Addison should understand the gravity of the situation. One must know how to recognize the right moment to act wisely. However, the woman in front of him clearly didn't take his slightly threatening tone seriously. Addison, as if she hadn't heard him at all, continued walking forward, soon reaching the exit of the large platform. As she approached the exit, the lights grew much brighter, and the scattered lights glistened on Addison's black dress, sparkling beautifully. The platform was filled with people, laughing and chatting with one another. Addison walked directly toward the crowd, leaving Lance standing behind. As he watched her walk farther away, a sense of panic started to stir in him. He didn't anticipate that Addison would refuse to explain anything at all. Perhaps it was driven by his pride, or perhaps it was the unexpected feeling of panic that had risen in his chest that Lance quickly rushed after her without thinking, wanting to grab her. He wanted to confront her, to ask why, why she wouldn't even offer a single explanation. ... At that moment, Virginia and Georgina were sitting directly across from the platform, each with a plate of delicate pastries in front of them, shaped like little bunnies. Soft and fluffy, they were absolutely adorable. Virginia brought them over especially for Georgina. "I was afraid one plate wouldn't be enough, so I brought you two. Go ahead and eat!" Virginia pushed the pastries toward Georgina. Georgina's eyes sparkled with joy, her smile genuine and warm, clearly coming from the heart without a hint of pretense. "Thank you!" Virginia watched Georgina smile with her eyes squinted, and she couldn't help but smile too, feeling the warmth of the moment. "You're welcome. Go ahead and eat." Georgina picked up her fork and took a couple of bites, but then paused. "Don't you want to try some too?" Virginia stood by, watching Georgina eat the pastries. Hearing her offer, she quickly waved her hand. "No, it's fine. I specifically brought these for you. Enjoy!" In an attempt to win Lance back, she had gone out of her way to make several batches of small pastries and sent them to his office. But Lance refused to see her.She tried a few times, each time putting a lot of effort into making the pastries, only for Lance to turn her down again and again. Virginia had no choice. Lance refused to meet her, and she had put so much thought—and expensive ingredients—into the pastries that she couldn't just let them go to waste. So, Virginia ended up finishing all the pastries herself, and even gained a few pounds. "Are you sure you don't want some? They're really delicious," Georgina urged, trying to convince her. "No, no," Virginia insisted firmly. Until Lance forgave her, she had to maintain her best figure. Seeing her firm attitude, Georgina said nothing more and just lowered her head to eat. Virginia watched her for a moment, perhaps out of boredom, before turning away to scan the people around her. In that instant, she thought she caught a glimpse of Addison. Given the depth of Virginia's hatred for Addison, she barely needed to take a second look—just a quick glance, and she was certain it was her. Even if Addison turned to dust, Virginia would still recognize her. Virginia's gaze followed Addison as she watched the woman slowly walk out from the platform. Why was Addison walking out from there? Virginia squinted, feeling a bit confused. Georgina noticed Virginia's distraction and followed her line of sight. "Huh, isn't that ... What's her name again ... " She scratched her head. "Addison ... Daves, right?" Before she could finish her sentence, a man's figure appeared behind the woman. Georgina froze. Is that ... Lance? Addison and Lance ... walking out from such a secluded, dim area, one after the other? Could it be ... Without thinking, Georgina quickly raised her hand to block Virginia's view, barely having time to put down her fork. She didn't want Virginia to see this scene. She couldn't let Virginia see it. If she did, it would break her heart! But her movement was clearly one step too late. Virginia pushed her hand aside, her eyes fixed on the two people walking side by side across from them. Georgina could see that Virginia was stiff as a board, her face pale and tense. It was obvious she'd been dealt a heavy blow.
