The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 226 As Long as the Stars Are There

"Why did you suddenly decide to attend a public event?" Leon asked, holding his phone, a look of confusion on his face. Matthew didn't respond. "When is the Medical Symposium happening?" Leon asked again. "Soon," Matthew replied but didn't give a specific date, his answer vague. "I need you to contact the organizers," Matthew continued. The old man had spent many years in his secluded Herbs Valley, researching herbal medicine, rarely leaving his quiet retreat in the valley. Only in cases of rare diseases, where no one else could help, would he step out of his isolation. Such occasions were rare, though. Having withdrawn from society for years, Matthew wasn't fond of interacting with strangers. Social situations were usually handled by his sons. Leon nodded and said, "Alright, no problem. I'll take care of it. "Where is the Medical Symposium being held? Should I come pick you up?" Leon asked. "In Preigh," Matthew answered. Preigh? Leon's eyes widened in surprise. Addison noticed Leon's reaction. She set down her fork and turned her attention to him. "Preigh is very close to Halton. If you're going to Preigh, why won't you visit your granddaughter too?" He suggested. Leon turned to look at Addison. Addison immediately waved her hands, panicking. "No, no." She wasn't mentally prepared for herself yet. Addison had been so rebellious when she married into the Johnstons. Her family had all been deeply upset. She wasn't prepared to see them again, unsure if they would accept her. Before anyone could say anything, Addison abruptly stood and quickly left the table, almost as though escaping. Ryan, noticing her distress, quickly set down his fork and followed her. "Dr. Daves!" Ryan called as he caught up to her. Addison turned and glanced at him. "Why are you here? Didn't you say you were hungry? Finished eating already?" She asked. "Mmm, yes," Ryan nodded, though he wasn't quite full yet. Addison didn't say anything else. She slipped her hands into her coat pockets, her eyes distant, her steps aimless. The two of them walked together down a quiet street. Addison's shoulder brushing against Ryan's occasionally. Ryan wanted to say something comforting, but each time he saw her profile, the words stuck in his throat. He could only walk silently beside her. The sky had already darkened. Because the venue for the Medical Symposium was in a remote area, the sky was clear, and countless stars were visible. The stars twinkled in the night. Addison stood still, captivated by the sight. Ryan stood beside her, the soft moonlight spilling across her face, illuminating one side of it. Her delicate profile looked even more serene under the cool light, the curve of her jawline perfect. In this quiet moment, her features were striking, almost ethereal in their beauty. Ryan, too, found himself mesmerized. "Dr. Daves, do you like stars?" He asked. "Mm," Addison replied, still gazing up at the sky. Her eyes seemed lost in the vastness of the night. Of course, she loved stars.Under that meteor shower, she had wished for Harvey to be her eternal star. Stars would never break their promises, would they? Ryan noticed how lost in thought Addison seemed with a knowing nod. So, Dr. Daves likes stars. "What is it that you like about stars?" Ryan couldn't help but ask. "Their brilliance? Their glow?" What did I like about the star? Addison furrowed her brow, genuinely thinking about it. What did I love about Harvey? Was it his kindness? His sincerity? No. What I loved was him—wrapped in all those beautiful qualities. I loved him, purely him, untouched by anything else. Sometimes, Addison would wonder why she had been so slow to notice. Harvey's love was gentle, just like him. He had a way of knowing exactly what was appropriate, always considerate in how he interacted with others, never making anyone uncomfortable. Even in love, he was like a warm spring breeze, gentle and mindful. Harvey's love resembled a gentle breeze, a steady stream that never exerted force, but was always present. He loved her but wanted her to live freely, to do what she loved, to be herself, to live her life as she saw fit, being the unique person she was supposed to be. And it was because she had been so slow that she hadn't realized Harvey's love for her. She hadn't understood the significance of that brooch until much later. Addison often wondered if they had had more time together—if she hadn't been so slow to understand—would they have had more beautiful memories?More time, fewer regrets? Now, it was too late; she would never see him again. "I don't know," she murmured softly, as if coming back to the present. "Hmm?" Ryan asked, confused. "I don't know exactly what I like about stars," Addison said, her voice trailing off as she looked back up at the sky. "But it doesn't matter." As long as the stars were there when she looked up, that was enough. ... The next day, after dropping Virginia off at her apartment, Lance headed straight to the office. As soon as he arrived, he saw Isaac standing at the door, clearly having been waiting for him. "What's going on?" Lance asked, stepping inside. Isaac quickly followed. "Mr. Johnston, Mr. Salvador came by this morning, but you weren't here, so he asked me to give you this," Isaac said, handing him a piece of paper. Lance looked down. It was a piece of paper. He frowned, clueless about the importance of the message, but he took over and took a glimpse. It was a flyer, messy and unfinished, as if it was a draft that hadn't been finalized yet. "Did Mr. Salvador explain why I need this?" Lance asked. Isaac shook his head. Lance took out his phone and called Mike. The phone was quickly picked up. "Did you see the paper I sent you?" Mike asked right away. "Yes," Lance replied flatly, his face emotionless.Mike heard the lack of inflection in Lance's voice and knew he hadn't understood the paper's significance. "Look at the lower left corner," Mike said. "The divine healer will be attending the Medical Symposium in Preigh in a few days. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." What? Lance hurriedly grabbed the paper and glanced at the corner. "Is this for real?" "Of course. When have my tips ever been wrong?" Mike said, his tone smug. Lance's face lit up. Steven's condition was worsening every day, and Lance was frantic. He had even stood in line at the medical consultation all day, eagerly anticipating this moment. Now it had finally come. "Great!" Lance exclaimed. "But there's one big issue," Mike said, his tone shifting. "What?" "It's the invitation to the Medical Symposium." "A mere invitation and you think I can't get one?" Lance replied confidently. Mike fell silent for a moment before speaking again. "Even the divine healer is attending this medical symposium. How high-end do you think this event will be?" Lance fell speechless. "How many influential people do you think will be fighting for an invitation to this event?" "How many from Kreshill alone? Do you think you can get one?" This time, it was Lance who fell silent.
