The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 205 Their Miracle Worker

Addison raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "Dr. Daves went all the way to help Steven, without asking for a dime for his hard work. And what does he get in return? Your complaints?" Addison's voice turned frosty. "Do you realize how many people will get on their knees just to get help from the Daves family?" Before Lance could reply, she went on, "If you're set on questioning the doctor's expertise, then we have nothing more to talk about." Once someone's made up their mind, it's almost impossible to change it. Leon stepped out of the car but didn't walk away. He approached Addison. "Who's on the phone? It's Lance, isn't it?" Addison nodded and waved him off. "You go on inside. I'll handle this." Her uncle had never liked Lance, and answering the phone was sure to make things worse. Leon hesitated but then reached out and grabbed Addison's phone. "I'll speak with him." The patient was his responsibility. It only made sense that he would handle the situation. "So, even with the Daves' secret medicine, we still couldn't wake up Grandpa?" Lance's voice was softer now, almost a murmur. He'd clearly calmed down from his earlier outburst, and his tone was no longer as sharp. Addison opened her mouth to speak, but Leon had already taken the phone. As Leon was the elder, she felt it wasn't her place to take it back. She stood there, hoping the conversation wouldn't escalate. "I'm the doctor who treated Steven," Leon said, introducing himself immediately. "I'll admit, I share some of the blame for Steven not waking up." His tone was respectful, and though he was from the Daves family, he spoke as a professional, not someone with a sense of entitlement. This honesty seemed to leave Lance speechless. "But I want to make one thing clear," Leon continued. "While I have some responsibility, the bigger issue lies elsewhere." Lance frowned but remained silent, listening intently."The real problem came when someone tampered with Steven's medication. The drug they used clashed with his condition and caused a severe reaction." Lance's eyes widened in realization. Someone had poisoned his grandfather? Leon paused before adding, "As for my credentials, Angel already confirmed that. If you don't believe it, feel free to check for yourself." After all, he'd used the Daves' secret medicine on Steven. He couldn't fathom why anyone would question his identity. Leon's directness seemed to have an effect on Lance. The younger man, realizing his earlier mistake, finally spoke. "Dr. Daves, I'm sorry. I was too quick to judge." Lance's mind cleared, and he realized insulting someone from the Daves family was a mistake he couldn't afford to make. Shifting his tone, he asked, "Is there still a chance my grandfather can wake up?" "As long as we can save Grandpa, we are ready to pay any price." That was a bold statement. Leon raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "With my abilities, I can't do anything. If we're serious about saving him ... " Leon sighed. "The only one who could help is the Daves' Divine Healer." "The Daves' Divine Healer?" Lance's face twisted with confusion. Dr. Daves had already been brought in, thanks to Addison. Now, they needed someone even more elusive from the same family? The odds of that happening were slim to none. "That's all I'm saying." Leon ended the conversation. It had been difficult enough to say that much to Lance calmly. Just as he was about to hand the phone back to Addison, Lance spoke up again. "Dr. Daves, you mentioned someone poisoned Steven, making his condition worse." Lance paused, then asked, "Do you know who did it?" There was a trace of hope in his voice. Leon chuckled, the question almost amusing. "How would I know?"Addison's curiosity piqued as she watched her uncle laugh. She had just told him who was responsible. "If you can't even figure out who did this, you might want to reconsider that CEO position of yours." His words were sharp, carrying more weight than Lance probably realized. With that, Leon abruptly ended the call. He held the phone, looking at Addison. For a moment, it seemed like he might say something else, but after a pause, he simply shook his head. "Angel, let's go home," he said, his voice firm. ... Lance stood motionless, staring at the screen where the call had ended. His mind raced with thoughts. Isaac, standing a few feet away, watched Lance carefully before speaking. "Mr. Johnston, Ms. Dolton is outside. She refuses to leave and insists on seeing you." "Should I let her in?" Isaac asked cautiously, unsure of how Lance would respond. The temperature outside had dropped significantly. Virginia, typically dressed in light clothing, was sure to be freezing by now. Lance didn't answer right away. His eyes darkened as he processed the situation. Isaac, sensing his hesitation, spoke again. "Mr. Johnston, it's really cold out there." He wanted to know what Lance would do with the suggestion. After all, no one could predict what Lance was thinking. If Virginia remained outside and begged for forgiveness, her chances of getting through to him were slim if he refused to let her in. Every second felt like walking on a tightrope. "If she wants to stay out there, let her," Lance said finally, his voice as cold as the air outside. Lance's resolve was clear. Isaac, now calmer, nodded. "Of course, sir." "Get me everything you can on the Daves' Divine Healer. As quickly as possible." Isaac didn't hesitate. "I'll handle it." "Go through the hospital's security footage. Look for anyone who stands out. If you find someone suspicious, dig deeper.""If we need more hands, use the house's resources. Find the person who poisoned Steven." Lance's gaze hardened. Whoever had made a move under his watch would pay the price. Isaac gave a quick reply. "Understood." Once the orders were given, Lance hesitated briefly. He was still weighing his next steps. Then, he walked toward the door. Isaac, after giving instructions to Steven's caretakers, followed him outside. Virginia stood at the door, her eyes locked on Lance, unmoving. She had been waiting, watching, in the cold. When she saw him, her face brightened. She had known it. Standing out in the freezing air would surely make him relent. And she was right. As Lance walked toward her, her expression became even more sorrowful. "Lance ... " she said, choking on the words as she stepped toward him. She would act helpless, and surely Lance would soften. But Lance didn't stop. He walked straight past her, heading to the car parked by the gate. Not a glance, not a word. Virginia froze. She couldn't believe how cold he had become. She stood there, the chill from the air creeping into her bones. With his back to her, it felt even worse—like the cold had seeped into her very soul. Just moments ago, he had been gentle, praising her. Now, a single word from Addison had turned him into someone else. Someone unrecognizable. She couldn't accept it. It was all Addison's fault. That woman had ruined everything. The bodyguard opened the car's door. Lance climbed in without a second glance at Virginia. His voice was calm and firm. "Take me to the law firm. We need to find Mike. He must know something" If anyone could track down the Daves' Divine Healer, it was Mike. "Lance ... Lance, please. Just look at me!" Virginia's voice cracked, a shiver in her tone, the cold making each word sharper than the last.
