The Replacement He Never Wanted
"What's your name?" Leon asked with a smile, turning to ask Ryan as if Addison were about to marry him the next second. "Uh." Ryan stuttered, unable to get his words out. Addison quickly said, "Uncle Leon, you're misunderstanding!" "Misunderstanding?" Leon clearly didn't believe her, his eyes full of curiosity. "If you weren't a couple, why are you two coming home together at this hour? "Don't lie to me." Leon laughed heartily, "I'm not saying I disapprove of you two being together." The young man standing beside Addison seemed familiar and had a good personality. This guy seemed much warmer and more approachable than Lance, who always had a cold and distant demeanor. Plus, he was even willing to protect Addison. As her uncle, Leon was very pleased with him. Hearing Leon's nosy tone, Addison quickly sipped water to calm herself. She then raised one hand to her forehead, her tone helpless. "He's my assistant at the lab, not my boyfriend. "He's coming home with me today because something got delayed, and he hasn't had dinner. Plus, most restaurants are closed by now, so he had no choice but to come with me. "Right, Ryan?" Addison turned to him and slightly tilted her chin, signaling him to agree. Ryan, understanding the hint in Addison's gaze, hurriedly nodded. "Yes, I'm here to cook for Dr. Daves. "Please don't misunderstand." Leon's eyes darted back and forth, scanning the young man's flushed face and Addison's calm demeanor. "Is that so?" Based on his many years of experience reading people, Leon was sure the young man liked Addison. But he wasn't one to speak about such things directly. Let the young ones handle their own affairs. He could only wish the young man good luck in his heart.Addison knew her uncle well. Not wanting to linger on the topic, she quickly changed the subject. "Uncle Leon, have you had dinner yet? "Let's have a meal together." Addison walked toward the kitchen. "Let Ryan cook for us." "Sure, I haven't eaten yet." Leon chuckled, "Then I'll leave it to you, young man." As he spoke, Leon stood up and patted Ryan's shoulder. Ryan hurriedly waved his hands. "No problem. "What do you like to eat? I'll cook it." He quickly followed Addison into the kitchen. With both of them in the kitchen, Leon strolled around the villa, his hands behind his back. The house was large, and the decor was exactly what Addison liked. But for some reason, it felt empty, too spacious. There wasn't much of a homey feel to it either. He couldn't help but wonder if Addison had been living here alone in this remote place for the past few years. How was she doing? With a long sigh, Leon couldn't help but mutter, "Sigh." If it weren't for Lance, Addison wouldn't have had to leave home for over three years and suffer so much. "Why the sudden sigh?" a voice interrupted. Leon turned around to see Addison. She was holding a glass with a yellow liquid that clearly looked like alcohol. Addison never used to drink. Leon waved his hand, trying to hide his emotions, and quickly corrected his expression. "It's nothing." Seeing Leon stay quiet, Addison spoke first. "What made you suddenly come to Halton to look for me?" Upon hearing this, Leon's tone immediately became serious. "I have to say, you're really heartless. It's been three years, and you haven't contacted your mother even once?" Addison blinked. "I ... " "Your mom's the type to act tough. Although she says she wants to kick you out, as a mother, she could never really want to get rid of you." Leon spoke with a sincere tone. Addison didn't say anything. She understood her mother's personality—sharp on the outside but soft on the inside. However, she hadn't contacted her mother because of a barrier in her heart. Marrying into the Johnstons had been her mistake, and she couldn't contact them. She didn't have the face to do so. "Why don't you come back to the Daves with me in a while and see her? She really misses you." Addison sipped the drink and stayed silent for a while, deep in thought. "Even if you don't see your mother, at least you should visit your grandfather. He misses you a lot. "Your grandfather is getting old. Who knows when ... " Leon couldn't finish the sentence. At those words, an image of Steven lying in a hospital bed flashed in. Addison's mind. Life was unpredictable, like a river that never stops. No matter how hard it tries to stay afloat, every fallen leaf is carried away. Some ripples stirred in her heart. After a long pause, she gently nodded. "Okay." Leon smiled, reaching out to pat her head. His calm voice held a subtle hint of amusement. "That's more like it." The two stood together near the stairs, continuing their conversation. Ryan was busy in the kitchen, and finally, dinner was ready. He brought the dishes to the table and waved at Addison and Leon, standing by the stairs. "Dinner is ready. We can eat now." Addison and Leon walked to the dining table. What greeted their eyes was a feast—so many dishes it was almost overwhelming. "No way, Ryan, you're this good?" Addison exclaimed, surprised by the spread. Ryan scratched his head in embarrassment. "It's nothing special."Clearly, he had forgotten about boasting about being a Chef Genius earlier in the car. Ryan glanced behind Addison and saw Leon. He quickly pulled out a chair for him. "Please, sit down." Leon, pleased with Ryan's attentiveness, sat down with a satisfied expression. Ryan quickly brought two sets of forks and knives and handed them to them. "Try it and see if it's good." Addison took the fork and knife and casually picked up a piece of Braised Pork in Maple Glaze. Before she could comment, Leon, who sat beside her, spoke first. "It's delicious!" Leon chewed the meat and gave a thumbs-up. "This is better than what many top chefs make!" His opinion of the young man rose even higher. "Really?" Ryan scratched his head, clearly flattered. Addison smiled. "Weren't you boasting about being a Chef Genius earlier? How come you're not so confident now?" She hadn't expected Ryan to cook this well. How many more surprises did he have that she didn't know about? "Well, this food is delicious. If you came here to cook for me daily, I don't know how much weight I'd gain!" Ryan's ears turned red, embarrassed. He hurriedly sat down to eat. The three of them gathered around the table. Leon, clearly hungry, ate eagerly, finishing a lot of food. He picked up some food for Addison and casually asked, "What did you two do today?" Perhaps because of the relaxed atmosphere, Ryan answered without thinking, "Dr. Daves spent the whole day doing surgery on Mr. Steven. She's exhausted." Steven? Leon's expression changed instantly. Addison quickly kicked Ryan under the table, signaling him to stop talking. Ryan quickly realized his mistake, sealing his lips and lowering his head to eat. Upon hearing the name, Leon immediately lost his appetite. He set his fork down and spoke earnestly. "You did surgery on Mr. Steven today? "Mr. Steven is Lance's grandfather?" He thought Addison had already cut ties with Lance. What was going on now?
