The Replacement He Never Wanted
Lance stood still, his gaze locked on the car speeding away, his expression deep and unreadable, lost in thought. Isaac scratched his head, unsure whether he should remind Lance. Although urgent matters were waiting in the company for Lance, he had tried calling him twice earlier but ignored him. If he called out again now, it would probably seem too tactless. So, Isaac stood to the side, his face drooping, quietly observing Lance, who remained rooted in place. The cold wind blew sharply, and he shivered, tightening his suit around himself. In such cold weather. If Lance wanted to see Addison, why not earlier? Why wait until now to stare at her departing figure? Besides, the car was already out of sight. He couldn't understand what was left to observe. Wasn't he cold? Just then, Isaac glanced up at Lance and suddenly realized the man was wearing a black coat, clearly made of high-quality fabric, likely very warm. Isaac felt defeated, glancing down at his wrinkled suit, which had become a mess from rushing over. He shook his head, hugging his thin frame. What a miserable fate—caught in the love-hate dynamics between his boss and others, forced to stand in the cold without a word. Honestly, Isaac thought of the humble life of a worker with self-deprecation. Just as Isaac wallowed in self-pity, assuming Lance would skip the office today, the sound of his cold voice suddenly broke the silence. "Go investigate Ryan for me." His tone was as cold as the winter wind, sending a shiver down his spine. "What?" Isaac's mind blanked. "What did you say?" The name Lance had just mentioned came too quickly, and he hadn't caught it. Lance turned his head, his eyes filled with coldness, clearly indicating his bad mood. "Mr. Johnston ... " Isaac knew the situation all too well. He couldn't afford to upset Lance, but he hadn't entirely caught the name Lance had just mentioned. He could only brace himself and ask again, "Mr. Johnston, I didn't catch what you said earlier. Could you please repeat it?" "I want you to look into the man standing with Addison. His name is Ryan Zimmer." Lance repeated himself. "Yes, sir." Isaac nodded. Lance wanted him to investigate the man with Addison? Was he jealous? "Make sure to check thoroughly; don't miss a single detail. If you overlook anything, pack your things and leave." Isaac nodded again, more firmly this time. "I'll make sure of it." With that, Lance opened the car door, ready to get in. Seeing Lance finally heading to the company, Isaac quickly followed. Still, just as he was about to open the car door, he noticed Lance's motion stopped. He looked in the direction of Lance's gaze, puzzled. There, walking briskly from the alley beside Johnston Enterprise's private hospital, was Virginia. Her expression was complicated to read due to the distance, but her hurried steps were obvious. This ... Wasn't Virginia supposed to be at the hospital? Why was she coming from the alley? Isaac was confused. Something about Virginia's behavior seemed off, even a bit suspicious. He looked up at Lance, but the expression on the man's face was inscrutable, making it impossible to tell what he was honestly thinking. "Mr. Johnston, do you need to say hello to Ms. Dolton?" Isaac asked cautiously. It wasn't odd for Virginia to be walking alone from the alley, but her actions seemed strange, almost guilty. It made Isaac wonder if there was something more to it. Lance said nothing, his eyes still following Virginia's figure. After a pause, he spoke. "No need. Let's go." Not seeing any significant reaction from the president, Isaac quickly answered, "Yes, sir." He dared not ask further. He shuddered as he started the car, but his mind was buzzing.Lance had noticed that Virginia wasn't at the hospital taking care of Steven but was coming out of an alley, her actions very suspicious. And yet, he didn't even go to check on it? It seemed like he didn't care about Virginia anymore. A few months ago, he was madly in love with her. The moment Virginia appeared, Addison was kicked out of the Johnstons. Now, he seemed indifferent to Virginia. His heart was challenging to understand. As the car drove away, a figure dressed in a white lab coat emerged from the alley near the private hospital. His steps were quick, and his expression tense. Perhaps it was because the white coat stood out so much, but still maneuvering the car, Isaac noticed the man immediately. That person seemed familiar. He narrowed his eyes, trying to get a better look. Just as he was about to make out his face, he heard Lance's voice. "Aren't you leaving?" Lance was resting with his eyes closed, one hand pinching the bridge of his nose, his expression weary and irritated. Isaac snapped back to attention. "Yes, sir. I'm on it." He didn't look back at the man, focusing instead on driving the car out of the hospital gates. Meanwhile, Ryan was driving with Addison in the passenger seat. Bored, she picked up a stack of experimental data and started flipping through it. Ryan glanced over at her and spoke. "Dr. Daves, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Why don't we go grab something to eat? "You've been in surgery for so long. You must be exhausted. Eating will help you regain your strength." Addison didn't feel hungry at first, but when she heard Ryan's suggestion, she started to feel a little peckish. "Okay." Ryan's eyes lit up. "Great! Where do you want to go?"Addison was still flipping through the data, lost in thought, unable to think of what she wanted to eat. "I'm not sure. You choose." Ryan blinked, checking the time—it was already past 9 p.m. "At this time, there's probably nothing open." "True," Addison said, lifting her gaze from the data. "But no worries. We can order takeout." "Takeout isn't really healthy." Ryan scratched his head. He suddenly had an idea. "Dr. Daves, how about I cook for you?" Addison raised an eyebrow. "You can cook?" "Of course! Back in college, I always cooked for myself. My cooking skills are top-notch. "People used to call me the Chef Genius." Ryan spoke proudly, his face beaming. Seeing his expression, Addison couldn't help but smile. "Alright, then. Let's head home, and you can cook." "Sounds good!" Ryan replied eagerly. The car soon reached the entrance of the Pendomium Heights. Ryan got out first, jogging around to open the car door for Addison. As she got out, she suddenly saw someone standing at the villa's entrance.
