The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 183 The Last Test

Lance had just uttered those cold, heartless words when Isaac's call came through. "Mr. Johnston, I've found Dr. Drew's contact information!" Hearing this, the man's pupils contracted sharply. He gave Addison one last glance before turning to leave. "Send it to me." Meanwhile, the bodyguard, who had clearly heard the angry orders earlier, leaned against the wall, desperately trying to blend into the background. He prayed that Lance wouldn't notice him at all. With no one stopping her, Addison quickly approached Steven's bedside. A group of doctors, all in white coats, surrounded Steven, fervently discussing his condition. "What kind of symptoms are these? I've never seen anything like this," one said. "Neither have I, but Mr. Steven's heart rate appears stable. So where's the problem?" another remarked, his brows tightly furrowed as he held a diagnostic tool, his expression grave. "What should we do?" someone muttered, their voice barely audible as they gazed at the motionless man on the bed. "If we can't save him today, we're all doomed." "It's all that woman's fault!" one doctor snapped, his frustration evident. "Dr. Logan already said it was untreatable, but she insisted on trying to save Mr. Steven. And now? His condition's worse, and she just walks away, leaving us to clean up the mess." Just as he was about to continue, Addison appeared beside him. "Who said I left?" The man spun around, startled. "Y-You're back?" Ignoring him, Addison addressed the group of doctors, her expression solemn. "Step aside." Though only two words, they carried an inexplicable authority. Addison's deep gaze was solemn and unwavering despite the soft warmth she exuded at first glance. Yet, at this moment, there was an almost imperceptible, overwhelming force about her—an unyielding strength that seemed capable of breaking through anything. Everyone gathered around the hospital bed felt an inexplicable sense of pressure emanating from her. These esteemed doctors, renowned in their fields, exchanged glances and, surprisingly, made way for her. Though they didn't understand why, they couldn't help but trust her skills upon meeting her eyes. From a distance, Virginia watched with a scowl. Useless fools! They actually made way for her?! She turned, intending to call for Lance, but he was nowhere in sight. Where had he gone? Virginia was puzzled. Mr. Steven's condition was critical—why would he leave? But now wasn't the time to dwell on it. She couldn't let Addison uncover anything suspicious. If she did, things could become very problematic. Virginia, unfamiliar with Addison's medical expertise, grew increasingly wary. If Addison managed to figure it out ... Realizing this, Virginia's heart filled with caution. She immediately turned and snapped, "What are you two hiding over there for? Didn't you hear that Lance just told you to get Addison out of here?" The two bodyguards, startled by her shout, flinched. "Ah?" One of them stammered, "Did you say that Mr. Johnston told us to get Ms. Daves out?" Virginia couldn't be bothered to say much. She just wanted Addison to leave quickly. "Hurry up and go. Stop dragging it out. Don't you want to stay in the Johnstons anymore?" The bodyguards straightened and approached Addison. By now, Addison had taken the diagnostic tool from one of the doctors and placed it on Steven's chest. As she checked various indicators, she carefully monitored the changes in his physical condition. The other doctors watched in silence, mesmerized by her deft movements. Fixing her eyes on the monitor, Addison noticed two particularly alarming red lines. Her expression grew grim. She grabbed a small flashlight, gently opened Steven's eyelid, and shone the light into his eye, revealing a dilated pupil. A sinking feeling gripped her heart. She quickly pressed on Steven's eye socket, but he showed no reaction. Her frown deepened as she performed several pain stimuli tests—all without any response. This was the onset of a vegetative state. As soon as this thought crossed her mind, Addison felt a shock in her heart. To confirm whether Steven was truly in a vegetative state, she almost immediately turned around, switched on the machine, and prepared to perform an EEG test on him. But just as she activated the machine, heavy footsteps approached. A strong hand grabbed her arm, immobilizing her. Addison didn't need to look up to know who it was. "Let go of me. I need to finish this last test," she demanded urgently. How could Mr. Steven suddenly display signs of a vegetative state? It didn't make sense! But the bodyguards remained impassive. "Ms. Daves, this is Mr. Johnston's order." Fortunately, when the bodyguards grabbed her wrist, she had already attached the EEG device. The equipment was running, and she was just waiting for the final results. At this moment, Addison couldn't care about anything else. She only wanted to delay as much time as possible to see whether the final result confirmed that Steven was indeed in a vegetative state. Just then, Virginia's voice rang out. "Addison, you're the one who caused Mr. Steven's condition to worsen, and now you're pretending to save him? What a sham!" Virginia frowned and gestured to the bodyguards as if Addison's presence alone disgusted her. "Get her out of here. Lance doesn't want to see her. "And Mr. Steven definitely wouldn't want to see someone who harmed him standing right before him," Virginia's tone dripped with sarcasm. "Yes," the bodyguard applied more force, and Addison couldn't resist any longer. She was passively dragged away from the bed. She lifted her eyes to glance at the EEG monitor one last time. The lines on the screen left no room for doubt. Steven was showing signs of becoming a vegetative state, and it wouldn't take long before he completely slipped into one. Addison could hardly believe what she was seeing. The two bodyguards were still pulling her toward the door. Unable to break free, Addison had no choice but to move with them. As they neared the door, Lance's figure entered her line of sight. He had just finished a phone call, his arm lowering the phone. Addison's eyes flickered with determination. "Let go. I'll walk myself." The two bodyguards naturally didn't dare to release her at such a critical moment. Furthermore, with Lance standing at the end of the hallway, they were even less inclined to make any rash moves. Lance heard the sound, and his gaze followed down the hallway, locking onto Addison's tense expression. After a brief silence, he spoke. "Let her go." Then he added, his tone firm, "But make sure she leaves." The bodyguards released her immediately. Addison hurried to Lance, her voice urgent. "Mr. Steven is already showing signs of a vegetative state. After experiencing heart failure, he's now inexplicably deteriorating. "Only a specific herbal medicine from the Daves can save him." Lance lowered his eyes to meet hers but remained cold and dismissive. "Inexplicably? "You think this is inexplicable? Are you still pretending at this point?" Virginia watched smugly at the far end of the hallway, a faint smile playing on her lips. She couldn't deny Addison's intelligence, but her overbearing righteousness and obsession with saving Steven would be her downfall. And that was why Addison could never be a match for her.
