The Replacement He Never Wanted
"What's wrong with Mr. Steven?" Virginia covered her mouth with trembling hands, staring at Steven lying on the operating table, fear etched across her face. Hearing her terrified voice, Lance whipped around instantly. He no longer cared about Addison, striding swiftly toward where Virginia had cried out. "What happened?" His brows furrowed tightly as he approached. Virginia saw the man approaching, and she raised her hand, pointing to Steven's bed. Lance followed her gaze. Steven was lying on the bed, his face seemingly calm, but his entire body trembled violently—an alarming sight to anyone watching. "What the hell is going on?!" Lance's expression turned grim instantly, all traces of his earlier composure vanishing. Something was seriously wrong with Steven. "I—I don't know. The moment I got here, he started like this. It scared me half to death," Virginia stammered, her voice quivering. She stared anxiously at Steven's trembling form. Though still unconscious from the anesthesia, it was clear something was wrong. His eyelids and the muscles near his eyes twitched unnaturally. Lance grabbed the private doctor nearby, his grip iron-tight. "Explain. Now!" "I—I don't know either." The doctor shook, his voice unsteady. "Everything seemed fine when we wheeled him out of the operating room. His condition was stable!" He stammered while nervously placing his trembling hand on the elder to check. "Mr. Johnston, please don't worry. I'll check him right away!" Lance glared at the doctor and the trembling Steven, his chest tightening as he struggled to control his emotions. "Addison clearly said the surgery was a success, and Grandpa was out of danger. So why the hell is this happening now?" The more he thought about it, the more something didn't add up. Seeing the storm brewing in his eyes, Virginia leaned closer, her voice tentative but meaningful. "Addison did say the surgery went well, but that was just her word. None of us understand medicine. Only she does. How can we be sure she told the truth?" Her tone was cautious, but her words carried a subtle implication.Sure enough, Lance's expression darkened further. He understood exactly what Virginia was suggesting, yet for some reason, his first instinct was to reject the idea that Addison could lie to him. Would she really deceive him? Just as this thought crossed his mind, the doctor's trembling voice broke through his turmoil. "Mr. Johnston, Mr. Steven's condition is extremely complicated. I ... I don't have the skill to handle this." "You're useless?" Lance's eyes blazed with fury. He grabbed the doctor's wrist and twisted it backward, eliciting a pained yelp. "Pathetic. Get out!" Before the words even faded, he kicked the doctor square in the knee. The man collapsed onto the floor, unable to move. "Lance, calm down! Don't take it out on the doctor. He didn't mean for this to happen," Virginia rushed to stop him, her hands tugging on his sleeve in an attempt to ease his rage. "Really? Grandpa's life is at stake, and all he can say is that he's incapable? What's the point of keeping him around?" Lance spat coldly. Sensing his fury, Virginia quickly reminded him, "The priority now is saving Mr. Steven." Her words brought him back to his senses, albeit barely. He grabbed the doctor by the collar once more, his voice deadly calm. "When Grandpa came out, how was his condition?" The doctor trembled violently. "H—his condition ... It ... It ... " He faltered, his voice barely a whisper. "Speak quickly!" Lance, clearly impatient, demanded. The doctor trembled, glancing at Virginia standing nearby, his eyes seemingly seeking confirmation. Standing behind Lance, Virginia blinked and gave him a reassuring look. Receiving the signal, the doctor finally spoke up. "When Mr. Steven was brought out, I checked on him immediately. His condition ... " "Spit it out!" Lance's restraint was starting to crack."His condition was indeed stable!" The doctor finally continued, "On the surface, there were no abnormalities, and all vital signs had returned to normal." "On the surface?" Lance caught onto the key detail instantly. "Yes, on the surface ... " The doctor cowered further. "It's possible his stability was only superficial. Otherwise, there's no way his condition would deteriorate so quickly after surgery. "And after a quick check just now, I believe his current state might be worse than it was before the surgery." Lance's gaze turned even colder, ice seemingly forming in his eyes. With a swift kick, he sent a nearby trash can flying across the room, the metal clattering as it hit the ground about 26 feet away. Did Addison lie to him after all? Did she only pretend to care about Steven's life just to grab his attention? "Bring Addison back here!" Lance roared, his anger erupting to its peak. "Yes." The bodyguards nodded and immediately left to find her. "What about Mr. Steven? What should we do?" Virginia tugged at his sleeve again, worry etched on her face. Lance clenched his jaw, running through the names of several renowned international doctors in his mind. The doctors they had on hand were useless. He needed someone more experienced. "Don't worry. I'll have my assistant contact better specialists immediately. Grandpa will be fine," he said firmly, as much to reassure Virginia as himself. "Okay." Virginia nodded, but a shadow of something unreadable flickered in her eyes. Meanwhile, Addison had just changed out of her surgical gown. Letting her hair fall loosely over her shoulders, she walked toward the exit of the changing room. However, as soon as she opened the door, she was stopped by two bodyguards standing in her way. "What's going on?" She frowned, puzzled by their presence. Without offering any explanation, the bodyguards grabbed her arms, forcing her forward. Addison was instantly confused. "Hey! What are you doing?" Addison shouted, struggling to break free. Yet the men's grip was too strong, and she had no choice but to move with them. One of the guards sneered, "You've got guts, Ms. Daves. Daring to play with Mr. Steven's life like it's a game?" He dragged her along while continuing mockingly, "I'm curious—who gave you the nerve to mess with Mr. Johnston like this?" Mess with Steven's life? Play Lance? Although Addison didn't fully understand the bodyguard's words, she was deeply shaken. When had she ever treated Steven's life as a joke?! "What's that supposed to mean?" Addison asked, no longer struggling. She voiced the confusion that had been building up inside her. "You should know exactly what I mean." The bodyguard's voice lowered. He was simply trying to warn her because he found Addison so beautiful. He didn't want to see such a stunning woman hurt by Lance. "Be a bit more respectful later," he advised. "Maybe Mr. Johnston will spare you." Though he knew the chances were slim—after all, Steven's life was hanging by a thread. Addison's confusion only deepened as she was pulled forward. Her eyes filled with questions, and an ominous feeling settled in her heart. Something bad had happened. Something very bad.
