The Replacement He Never Wanted
The woman wore a bodycon dress yet moved with surprising speed. Before Addison could react, she swiftly bent her knee and launched a kick forward, her leg shooting out like a bolt of lightning. There was an unexpected intensity and cruelty in her attack. Her movements were fluid and continuous, with the sound of rushing air accompanying her every action, striking Addison in the face. Unable to move quickly enough, Addison shut her eyes, almost accepting whatever was coming. The rush of wind suddenly ceased, but the pain she had anticipated never arrived. When she opened her eyes, she saw a strong figure in front of her. Gordon had caught the woman's powerful kick with just one hand, his wrist muscles tense. His face remained emotionless, as if he felt no pain at all. Addison blinked, briefly forgetting that Gordon was still behind her after being alone for so long. With him there, at least she wasn't in any real danger. The woman frowned, increasing her effort, attempting to attack Gordon. However, the man remained unmoved, his eyelashes fluttering slightly before his wrist moved like a flash, locking onto her wrist without hesitation. There was no sign of mercy or compassion in his actions. Once he had the woman secured, Gordon quickly twisted her ankle in the opposite direction, making her wince in pain. Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, he swiftly kicked her knee with his right foot. His movements were so quick that the woman didn't have time to react, losing her balance and stumbling back 20 inches. Addison watched as the woman collapsed on the ground, blood clearly flowing from her mouth. Her heart tightened in response, and she couldn't help but glance at Gordon. With his special forces background, it was no surprise that his fighting abilities were so extraordinary. However, witnessing his skills in action today truly left her stunned. The woman tried to rise, determined to continue challenging Gordon. A voice, aged but firm, interrupted her, "Alex, step back." At once, Alex froze, but her eyes still burned with resentment as she glared at Gordon."Step back," the elderly man repeated, his tone carrying undeniable authority. Reluctantly, Alex looked away, wiped the blood from her mouth, and complied, stepping aside. Seeing this, Addison also spoke, "Gordon, you step back too." Without a word, Gordon obeyed and took a step back. The director approached Addison slowly, his voice laced with confusion and a trace of offense. "Who are you?" Addison was sure that, had it not been for Gordon's recent actions, the director would have already thrown them out. "I am Lance Johnston's wife, Addison Daves," she said softly, bowing politely. It was only right for her to apologize for entering without a proper greeting, and she decided to be more courteous. The director's expression shifted dramatically when he heard her connection to the Johnstons. He sneered, "So you're from the Johnstons. No wonder you're so disrespectful! Trespassing on someone's house is illegal! Leave now, or I'll call the authorities." Seeing his reaction, Addison became more convinced of her suspicions. It seemed that Lance had truly offended Yarrow, or else the director wouldn't have reacted so strongly at the mention of his name. His agitation was clear. She looked up at the elderly man. "Sir, I came here today for a specific reason." "A reason? Even if you have one, it doesn't matter. You can't stay. Leave now! If you don't leave right away, don't blame me for being rude." The director's tone was clearly filled with impatience. Addison remained still. "A family that breaks their promises wants to talk to Yarrow, thinking you can push us around?" "Break their promises?" Addison caught the key detail in his words. "When did the Johnstons break their promise?" "You don't know?" The director's tone was filled with disbelief, clearly questioning her knowledge. After a brief pause, he realized, "Well, of course, Lance wouldn't mention something that would shame his family." The director snapped, clearly infuriated by the topic, "If he won't say it, I will! Your husband tried to negotiate with Yarrow using a fake authorization!" A fake authorization? Addison understood immediately. So that was the issue. Feigning surprise, Addison covered her mouth with her hand. "He used a fake authorization? How could that be?" "Hmph, why wouldn't it be possible? You should ask your husband yourself. He really embarrassed the Johnstons!" Addison quietly agreed with herself. Lance's actions were undeniably embarrassing for the Johnstons. But was this the first time he had brought shame to their name? She let out a bitter laugh before going back to her role as the graceful Mrs. Johnston, her expression still one of feigned shock. The director shot a quick glance at the astonished Addison, his voice filled with irritation, as if he couldn't bear to look at her for another second. "Hurry up!" Addison remained still. She hesitated and asked, "So, does Yarrow intend to cooperate with the Johnstons?" "Cooperate?" The director found it rather amusing. "Are the Johnstons truly this shameless? How dare you? "Go back and tell Lance that no matter which company in Yarrow or Halton, we won't cooperate with Johnston Enterprise! Tell him to give up on this idea!" Addison couldn't help but feel a secret sense of satisfaction. Yarrow truly had no intention of working with the Johnstons. That meant the deal with the Fullers was secured. "Well, that's a relief," Addison unintentionally blurted out just as the director was becoming angry. "That's a relief?" The director looked confused. Noticing his gaze shift toward her, she seized the moment to speak, "It's definitely the right decision to avoid collaborating with the Johnstons. "Really?" The director's eyes gleamed with interest as he listened to her. "What do you mean by that? Yarrow refusing to work with the Johnstons—shouldn't you be upset?" Addison shook her head. "Why would I be upset? It seems you don't know yet, but I'm getting a divorce from Lance." "Lance's first love has returned, and he immediately abandoned me, kicking me out of the Johnstons ... " she said, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. Her face seemed on the verge of breaking into sobs, giving her the appearance of someone who had been deeply loved and then cruelly left behind. The director remained composed, his brow furrowing. Noticing his expression, Addison smirked. After watching Virginia act for so long, her acting skills had certainly improved. With a bit more practice, maybe she'd even surpass Virginia's acting one day. "So what?" He wasn't interested in Lance's personal matters. "So, I'm someone who's been abandoned by the Johnstons. If things go badly for them, I'm pleased. If things go well, I'm upset," Addison said earnestly. "Yarrow is the biggest hospital partner of the Johnston Enterprise. If Yarrow refuses to work with them, they will lose an important ally, which means it will suffer greatly." She continued slowly, "So, I'm happy about this. I hope the Johnstons fail, and it would be best if they went bankrupt. The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Her words were filled with genuine malice, so convincing that the director couldn't tell whether she was being truthful or not. "Interesting," the director clearly found her statement intriguing. Lance's wife wishes that the Johnstons aren't doing well, even suggesting it would be ideal if it went bankrupt. How interesting! He approached the wooden desk in front of him and turned to give an order, saying, "Alex, please bring our guest a cup of tea." As if his mood had lifted slightly, he added, "The finest tea." After that, he motioned to Addison with a friendly tone, "Please, have a seat." Addison sat down without hesitation. Alex silently set a freshly brewed cup of tea in front of Addison. The familiar aroma of the tea filled the air, and Addison finally recalled the comforting scent. This was Greenhill ornitongue! Grandpa used to enjoy this tea while relaxing in the yard. The director picked up the cup and took a sip. "What do you wish to discuss? Go ahead and speak."
