The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 138 She Is My Wife

Addison glanced at him, the usual smile gone from her lips, replaced by a look of complete indifference. Lance was taken aback by Addison's gaze. Why was it so cold? Previously, Addison always greeted him with a smile, and even if she was not smiling, she maintained a gentle and considerate demeanor. Lana had once remarked that Addison was known as a celestial fairy within the Halton aristocracy, famed for her grace. She never berated the servants for their blunders, a rarity in a world where maids often envied the Johnstons for their kindness. Now, faced with her icy stare, Lance felt a pang of discomfort. An unfamiliar emotion surged through him—it was not quite discomfort or regret. It was indefinable. Yet, one thing was certain. He despised this feeling. He loathed being swayed by emotions. "Do you have anything else to say?" Addison's voice was cold, her tone flat. For a moment, Lance was caught in memories of times spent with Addison. Flashes of the past flickered through his mind: her covering him with a blanket, rising early to prepare breakfast, the dinner table always set with his favorite dishes, and how, at social gatherings, she elegantly stood by his side, earning praises from the affluent circles ... Despite her efforts, he had remained distant, often cold and dismissive ... Reflecting on this, Lance tightened his lips, about to respond when he was interrupted. "Mr. Johnston, do you have anything else to do?" Michael approached rapidly, his expression concerned as he saw Lance clinging to Addison. "If there's nothing more, we'll be leaving. We won't impose any longer." Lance snapped back to the present. His gaze fixed on Michael, his grip still firm. Then, he retorted after a pause, "What concern is it of yours if I speak to my wife?"His tone was icy. Michael raised an eyebrow, undeterred. "Now you remember Ms. Daves is your wife? Why didn't that cross your mind when you were throwing accusations her way earlier?" He reached for Addison's other hand. "Let's go." As Michael tugged her forward, Lance's grip did not slacken. Instead, he pulled her back sharply. The force caused Addison to stumble slightly. "Lance, just say what you need to say. Why all this drama?" Addison's patience was clearly wearing thin. Sensing her irritation, Michael quickly released her hand, apologizing, "Ms. Daves, I'm sorry." Addison nodded slightly, dismissing his apology with a shake of her head, "It's okay." She then turned to Lance. "Can't you see? Michael has let go. What about you?" "Aren't you worried about your first love getting upset by your antics?" Addison's words dripped with sarcasm. Virginia stood to the side, watching Lance grip Addison's hand firmly, her teeth clenched tightly in anger. However, remembering Lance's frosty demeanor, she held her tongue. Upon hearing Addison address her directly, she could not restrain herself any longer, "What are you implying?" "Do you think I'm as petty as you? Lance does what he wants; I don't meddle," Virginia retorted sharply, her voice laced with bitterness. Addison's distance did nothing to muffle the harshness of her tone. Addison scoffed, "What admirable restraint." She then faced Lance once more, her voice firm. "Let go." Lance's hand finally relaxed. Addison straightened her attire, looked up at him, and softly called out, "Lance." He averted his gaze. Virginia's jaw clenched. What is this woman scheming now? She had just forced Lance to release her, and now she's addressing him with such tenderness! The sly fox! Addison stood tall, her voice resolute, "Lance, we're divorced now, aren't we?" Lance's eyes darkened, his face unreadable, giving nothing away. "I expect you to act with more decorum in the future, lest the CEO of the prestigious Johnston Enterprise appear rather unseemly." With those words, Addison stepped forward, exiting the opulent room without a backward glance. Her high heels clicked sharply against the floor, each step resolute and defiant. "You're the one who's unseemly!" Virginia called out after Addison, incensed. How dare someone as insignificant and impoverished as her speak to Lance in such a manner? Michael gave Lance a meaningful look before hurrying after Addison. "Ms. Daves, wait for me," he called, catching up to her. ... The two figures disappeared from view, one chasing after the other. Yet, Lance remained motionless, his expression cold and distant, his thoughts a mystery. "Lance! Addison's gone, why are you still staring in that direction?" Virginia tugged at his arm, her voice soft. "If you keep this up, I will really start to get jealous!" she fluttered her eyelashes, her flirtatious manner nearly overflowing. Lance finally turned away. "Lance, what exactly were you discussing in there?" Although she had tried to eavesdrop at the door, the soundproofing at the Grimwell Restaurant was too effective, and she could only catch fragments of the conversation. Those fragments were inconclusive, leaving Virginia uncertain about Addison's true identity. "Is Addison really Dr. Nancy?" "No," Lance responded curtly. Virginia's eyebrows shot up in surprise. She knew it! Addison could not possibly be Dr. Nancy! Recalling Addison's demeanor just moments ago, a wave of irritation washed over her. What was she trying to prove?"She's Dr. Nancy's assistant," Lance's words followed, sending Virginia's spirits crashing down. Her brief moment of triumph swiftly turned to disappointment. She's Dr. Nancy's assistant?! How can that be?! "Lance, are you certain?" Virginia's voice wavered, laden with incredulity. It seemed so unlikely; she just could not accept it. "Addison is probably fooling you! Lance, don't be manipulated by her. She's trying to gain your respect and alter your opinion of her," she pleaded. "Lance, you mustn't be deceived by her!" Usually, Virginia's eyes twinkled, her smile adding a sparkle that seemed to outshine even the brightest stars. Now, Lance found her presence almost unbearable. ... Virginia kept talking, non-stop. Lance's patience finally snapped, "Enough!" He had not ever thought of Virginia as bothersome before. Taken aback by his loud interruption, Virginia stared at Lance, disbelief etching her features, "Lance, I'm just trying to protect you, you ... " "Shut up!"
