The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 124 How Should He Proceed It?

Everyone was watching Virginia closely as she pushed open the door. She knew the risks involved. If Lance was truly angry, barging in would have serious consequences. But she didn't care. If she lost dignity in front of the employees of Johnston Enterprise now, her authority would be weakened when she became Lance's wife. That was something she couldn't accept. Taking a gamble could help solidify her position in the employees' eyes and also improve how Lance viewed her. After all, showing up when he was upset and offering him comfort would prove her love for him. Virginia took a few cautious steps forward, trying to calm herself. The office looked normal—no chaos as she had feared. The space was calm, with its usual elegant décor. The cold leather couch reflected silver under the harsh light, and the air was filled with Lance's signature scent, a mixture of smoky incense and the sharpness of ebony wood. Virginia blinked, her anxiety starting to fade. She had expected to find destruction, but everything was in place. Lance didn't seem as furious as she had imagined. She glanced around, but Lance was nowhere to be seen. Confused, she stepped further in. "Lance? Where are you?" she whispered. "Lance, I'm here, but I can't find you. Where are you?" she called out, a little louder now. A cold voice suddenly came from the far side of the office, saying only, "Get out." It sent a chill through her. Lance stood by the window, his back to her. His posture was relaxed, yet his sharp gaze stared outside, cold and piercing. The silver watch peeking from his cuff added to the icy impression. Virginia flinched but quickly regained her composure. "Lance, why are you over there? I've been looking for you," she said, moving toward him. "I said, get out! Can't you hear me?" His voice was even colder now, devoid of warmth. Virginia had never heard him speak like that, not even when she had framed Addison. She hesitated, unsure whether to move any closer. "Lance, are you upset? Isaac told me you were angry after coming back from the Fuller Residence. Did they say something to upset you?" she asked gently, wondering if Addison was the one behind his anger.Lance stood still, his mind drifting back to the events at the Fuller Residence. He had humbled himself by reaching out to the Fullers, hoping to form a partnership, but they had turned him down with a dismissive attitude. The thought of it still frustrated him. "Lance?" Virginia called again, noticing that he hadn't responded. Could Addison truly be the cause of his anger? "Don't you get it? Leave!" Lance barked, standing by the window and loosening his tie, visibly on edge. The Fullers had rejected the deal, and Raven Company still held Dr. Nancy's authorization. Johnston Enterprise was running out of time. Lance was unsure what the next step should be. Virginia dared not approach further. "Lance ... " she started, but before she could say more, the bodyguard outside had already reached her side. "Ms. Dolton, Mr. Johnston doesn't want to see you right now. Please don't push it," he said politely, though there was a definite warning in his tone. Virginia turned back. "I ... " "Please leave," the bodyguard said, his expression emotionless. She realized that pushing forward would go against Lance's wishes, and she didn't dare to do that. "Okay, I'll go now," Virginia said, her voice soft. Still, she couldn't shake off her concern for Lance. As she started to walk away, she looked back toward where he was, calling out, "Lance, I'm leaving now. "Please try not to stay angry. Constant anger isn't good for you. It's not worth hurting yourself over those people." Lance didn't respond. "Ms. Dolton, if you don't leave right now, I'll have to escort you out," the bodyguard said. "Please understand." "Are you serious?" Virginia shot him a sharp look. After all, she was engaged to Lance. The bodyguard was so bold to treat her this way. Was he even in a position to act like that? The bodyguard shrugged. "I'm just following orders. Please don't take it personally. Mr. Johnston specifically asked not to be disturbed, so please don't make this harder for me."Noticing that the bodyguard wasn't being rude, Virginia let out a cold snort. "I'm not trying to make things difficult for you." She glanced one last time in Lance's direction before turning and walking out of the office. She left without showing any emotion, and the people waiting outside were curious about what had happened inside. One of them nudged Isaac and said, "Go ask Ms. Dolton if she managed to calm Mr. Johnston down." The office had great soundproofing, so they couldn't hear anything from inside. Isaac turned to glare at the person who spoke. "Why don't you go instead? Why should it be me?" "Just go, please. I don't know Ms. Dolton well enough to ask her." "Please, Isaac, go quickly," another person urged. Isaac sighed and shook his head. "Fine, you guys stay here." "Thanks, Isaac!" the person said eagerly. Isaac stood up and walked over to Virginia, asking, "Ms. Dolton, how did it go? Did you manage to calm Mr. Johnston down?" Virginia cleared her throat, her expression calm and showing no signs of failure. Just as Isaac thought she must have succeeded, she said, "No." He was taken aback. "W-what do you mean?" "Lance hasn't calmed down." Isaac's heart dropped. "Even you couldn't convince him?" Virginia glanced at him and replied, "I didn't try to convince him." "You didn't?" Isaac was even more confused. "But you just went in there. Why didn't you try to talk to him?" She kept her calm and responded, "When I went in, Lance was the same as always. He was gentle with me, just like usual."
