The Replacement He Never Wanted
"Say that again." Annie set her cutlery down, her expression serious. She thought she'd heard the server correctly, but she couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. "Mr. Fuller ... he's in trouble!" The server's chest heaved with frantic breaths, struggling to get the words out, finally gasping out the sentence. This time, Annie heard him clearly. "How could Michael be in trouble? What's going on?!" Annie stood up abruptly in her anxiety. Addison's expression also tightened with worry. "Lance ... He's trying to force Mr. Fuller to sign the contract. Mr. Fuller refused. Now, Lance is going to hurt him. The bodyguard is too strong. Mr. Fuller doesn't stand a chance." The server spoke in a fragmented rush, barely catching his breath. "If this keeps up, Mr. Fuller could be in danger ... " Annie's hands, wrinkled with age, shook in anger. "How outrageous! How dare he lay a finger on my grandson, right under my nose?!" Addison's frown deepened. Lance was actually going to hurt Michael? And all because Michael refused to cooperate with the Johnstons? This wasn't Lance's style. Lance wasn't the type to resort to violence at the slightest provocation. In business, he had his own principles. He understood that business, much like warfare, was full of risks—one wrong move could leave you vulnerable and could even destroy you. That's why he always acted with caution. Could it be possible that such a careful, principled person like Lance would recklessly harm Michael? Or was it that the Johnstons had backed him into a corner, forcing him to abandon his principles and resort to such drastic measures? Addison thought for a moment, and the second possibility seemed more likely. "To act like this on the Fullers' turf? They really think the Fullers are pushovers!" Annie said, storming out. "Go downstairs and get the bodyguards now!" The server nodded quickly at her command, then hurried off.Annie made her way toward the door but suddenly remembered there was still someone in the room. She turned around, her tone flustered. "Ms. Daves, I'm sorry. I'm afraid I won't be able to entertain you any longer today." Seeing Annie apologize even in such an urgent situation, Addison quickly stood up. "Please, go ahead. Mr. Fuller's safety is the priority." Annie nodded, then turned and disappeared at the doorway. Addison was left standing alone in the room. Her brow had been furrowed from the start, and now, standing in place, her expression remained tense. She was torn. Should she go with them? Michael was in trouble and Annie had even remembered to apologize to her before leaving. If she stayed behind now without doing anything, would it seem heartless? But then again, even if she went, would she really be able to help? Addison pressed her lips together, torn by indecision. One thing she was sure of was that her hesitation wasn't because she was afraid of Lance seeing her. In fact, she wasn't afraid at all of being seen at Fuller Residence. In the past, she might have been concerned about how to explain her whereabouts. But now, it was different. She wasn't sure why, but ever since Lance believed her cheating rumors and kicked her out of Johnston Residence, Addison felt a part of her had broken. Her mind had become clearer. The Johnstons' behavior was like a slow, relentless disease, gradually corroding and burning away at her heart. It couldn't completely destroy her heart, but it was slowly draining all her emotions ... And when that day came, when there were no emotions left, the Johnstons and she would be complete strangers. What Addison feared now was that if she rushed over, Michael might not be able to withstand the pressure and expose her identity. If that happened, everything she had done over the years to keep her true identity hidden would be in vain. After a brief moment of inner conflict, Addison decided to trust Michael's character. She quickly made her way toward the door of the next room. ... Meanwhile, Annie stormed into the room, furious, shouting, "Lance, if you dare lay a hand on anyone here at Fuller Residence, I'll risk my life to make sure you pay for it!" The room fell silent. Annie was taken aback. She didn't expect to walk in and find the situation completely different from what she imagined. Her beloved grandson was sitting unharmed in a chair, looking perfectly fine. "Huh?" "Grandma, you're here." Michael quickly stood and rushed over to help her. Annie was confused. "Didn't I hear you were in trouble? What's happening now?" "It's a long story." Michael hesitated, unsure how to explain. Lance noticed her arrival and stood up, addressing her. "Old Mrs. Fuller, I'm Lance Johnston, CEO of Johnston Enterprise." "I know who you are, no need for introductions," Annie said, her tone sharp. Before she could say anything further, a swarm of bodyguards suddenly poured into the room, filling the space with a sea of dark suits. The room was too small to fit them all, so the rest lined up outside. Their faces were all serious, all standing at attention, as if ready to act at command. "What's going on here?" Lance asked, his gaze sweeping over the bodyguards that now surrounded the room. His smile was more of a challenge than a greeting. Amid the swarm of bodyguards standing outside the door, Addison was awkwardly caught among them. She made up her mind to help Michael escape danger, but as soon as she stepped into the hallway, a large group of bodyguards appeared. Before she could step aside, she was swept along with them, forced to move forward and ended up squeezed right by the door of the adjacent room. To make matters worse, Addison was dressed in black that day, making her blend in seamlessly with the bodyguards, who were all in dark suits. She stood there, surrounded by the bodyguards, unable to move. After a failed attempt to leave, she peered through the gaps, her gaze drifting over the room in confusion. Addison blinked, trying to make sense of the situation. How was Michael standing there, perfectly fine? There were no signs of a fight in the room. Wasn't he supposed to be in danger? Michael glanced at the bodyguards before responding, "Mr. Johnston's actions earlier were easily misunderstood, so for security reasons, the Fullers decided to send the bodyguards upstairs." His tone was neither submissive nor overly respectful, but Lance could easily tell that it lacked the politeness and respect from earlier. "Well, if the danger has passed, then surely there's no need for all these people to remain here," Lance said, raising an eyebrow. "Have them leave. We still have business to discuss," Lance said, his tone calm yet carrying a natural authority. Addison, paying close attention to their conversation, quickly grasped the situation. The earlier "incident" had clearly been a misunderstanding. She felt relieved. "Have all the bodyguards left?" Michael echoed, eyeing Lance. "Yes," Lance nodded. "It was just a misunderstanding. There's no need for all this tension." Addison stood among the crowd, feeling indifferent towards Lance, but she couldn't help but agree with his words. Since there was no real danger, she could go home now. She hoped the bodyguards would soon return downstairs so she could slip away unnoticed. However, Annie spoke up, "I still think it's necessary. Let the bodyguards stay here. No one should leave." Lance's expression darkened instantly in response to the direct challenge to his command.
