The Replacement He Never Wanted
Addison nodded. "Alright, I'll head over once I'm ready." If the Fuller matriarch was really from the Daves family, then it was important for her to meet with her. Michael eagerly agreed. "We'll be waiting for you at the Fuller Residence!" He didn't expect Dr. Nancy to actually agree, let alone be willing to make a visit. "Oh, and there's no need to prepare anything fancy. I'm just coming for a simple meal," Addison said, noticing the excitement in Michael's voice. She wasn't one to make a big deal out of things, nor did she consider herself particularly important. She didn't want others to treat her differently because of her position or offer her special treatment. "Okay, no problem!" Michael responded eagerly. ... The afternoon sun hung low, casting a warm, golden light across the asphalt. Addison arrived at Fuller Residence. The architectural style of Fuller Residence was completely different from the Johnston Residence. While Johnston Residence blended classical charm with modern elements, Fuller Residence was all about contemporary design. The modern buildings stood along the roadside, exuding a high-tech vibe. As soon as Addison stepped out of the car, someone approached to greet her. "Hello, are you the doctor visiting Fuller Residence today?" The person's tone was respectful and polite. Addison nodded. From the way she was addressed, Addison realized that Michael hadn't revealed her full identity as Dr. Nancy—he had simply told them she was a doctor. He was still being very tactful. "Good afternoon, I'm the butler here. Mr. Fuller is waiting for you on the second floor. Please follow me." "Okay." Addison followed the butler upstairs. The upper floor was expansive, with large floor-to-ceiling windows. Through them, she could see the lively streets below and the towering skyscrapers. Addison followed the butler down the long hallway and finally arrived at the room. She opened the door. Annie Daves sat at the head of the table, with Michael seated beside her. "Dr. Nancy, welcome! Please, take a seat," Michael said, standing up quickly to pull out a chair for her as soon as she walked in. "Thank you." Addison smiled. As she settled into her seat, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone's gaze was lingering on her. Addison glanced up and met Annie's gaze. The elderly woman, with her silvery hair and high cheekbones, had a small, delicate nose and kind eyes that crinkled at the corners when she smiled. "Hello," Addison said warmly, returning Annie's gaze. Annie smiled back and gave a slight nod. "Are you ... " Addison began, about to ask if Annie was from the Daves family. However, when she noticed Michael sitting nearby, she hesitated and stopped herself. Annie smiled, clearly understanding Addison's unspoken question. "Michael, why don't you step outside for a moment? I need to have a word with Dr. Nancy." Michael was taken aback. "You want me to leave?" Dr. Nancy had just arrived and was already asking him to leave? Annie continued to smile, nodding gently. "Yes, I have a few things to discuss with Dr. Nancy. It's just more convenient if you're not here." Michael didn't say anything more and got up to leave. Addison watched as he closed the door behind him, then couldn't hold back any longer. She immediately asked, "Are you from the Daves family?" Annie's eyes creased into gentle smile lines as she nodded, her eyes narrowing slightly in amusement. "Yes, I am." Addison's eyes brightened instantly. Finally, in this distant place, she had met a family from her hometown! "You're Addison, right?" Addison nodded. "Have we met before?" Annie's face remained soft with a kind smile, one that seemed truly sincere—a smile that came from the heart. It felt genuine and comforting. Very friendly. Whether it was because Annie reminded Addison of someone familiar or simply because she had an inherently warm presence, Addison immediately felt a sense of fondness toward her. "I saw you when you were just a little girl. You were quite young back then." Addison blinked in surprise. "You've seen me when I was a child?" She couldn't recall ever meeting this kind, elderly woman before. "In that banquet," Annie said, her expression distant as if lost in thought. "I don't remember it clearly, but I saw you from afar. You were very young back then." "Banquet?" Addison thought hard, but there was no memory of any banquet in her mind. "At that banquet, you disappeared halfway through, and your mother was looking everywhere for you!" Huh? Addison was even more confused now. She had no recollection of that event at all. "Are you divorced from that Johnston guy now?" Annie suddenly asked, her gaze turning serious as the smile that had lingered on her face faded considerably. Annie's sudden shift to seriousness caught Addison off guard. She straightened up and replied, "Yes." She hadn't expected the elderly woman to know so much or to speak as though she understood her situation so well. "It's for the best," Annie sighed. "Do you know how heartbroken your mother was when you decided to marry into the Johnsto family?" Addison blinked. Of course, she knew how much it had hurt her mother. But she had no regrets about her decision. "Your mother often asks me to keep an eye on you, always checking in on how you're doing."Addison was surprised by this revelation. "Really ... ?" She didn't realize her mother had been keeping track of her this whole time. Was her mother really watching over her quietly? A wave of mixed emotions washed over her. "Of course," Annie replied with a warm smile. "You moved to Halton all on your own. Any mother would worry. What mother doesn't love her child? She's always thinking about you. "You left for three years and never even called home. Sigh ... " Annie's words trailed off, and she let out a deep sigh. For some reason, Addison suddenly felt overwhelmed by a love as vast as the sea. Her heart melted, and before she knew it, her eyes were filled with tears. The tears spilled over, falling down her cheeks and soaking into her clothes. Seeing this, Annie quickly grabbed a tissue and gently wiped away her tears. "Don't cry. A beautiful child like you shouldn't be crying. It doesn't look right on you." "Take some time to call your mother. She's been waiting to hear from you." Addison's tears flowed even more freely at the mention of her mother, uncontrollable and unrelenting. Annie gently patted her back, offering comfort. After a while, Addison slowly regained her composure. The tears gradually stopped, and she wiped her face dry. Years of living away from home, and the struggle to revive Johnston Enterprise on her own, had changed her. She was no longer the carefree child who once lived under the Daves roof. She had matured. Aside from her emotions related to Harvey, she was able to quickly regain control over everything else. After a while, Annie and Addison finished talking about the past, and the meal was served. Michael walked back in. "Grandma, are you done talking?" Michael asked as he made his way to his seat. "Yeah," Annie replied with a smile. "When do you think we could move forward with the Acygine project?" he asked, trying to find out Dr. Nancy's stance."It depends on the Fullers. The lab doesn't have any urgent projects at the moment. If the Fullers need it, I can start right away," Addison replied seriously. "That's great!" Michael's eyes lit up with excitement. His grandmother had truly worked her magic and quickly got Dr. Nancy on board. He noticed that Addison's quick agreement must have been influenced by her conversation with his grandmother. Just as he was processing this, the butler suddenly entered. "Mr. Fuller, Mr. Johnston is here to see you." Michael's smile faltered. He had completely forgotten that he had an appointment with Lance, the CEO of Johnston Enterprise, today. Addison raised an eyebrow at the mention of Lance. So, instead of pursuing copyright issues with Raven, he was now targeting ApexMed? What was he up to?
