She Was Reborn 10 Minutes Before the Apocalypse… What Happened Next Shocked Everyone

Chapter 47 The Dog Sets Out

After receiving a sweet kiss from his owner, Colby spun around excitedly, nearly losing control of his joy. Not to be outdone, Lily clung to Nadia's arm. "Miss, it was so scary outside. There was water everywhere, flooding the houses. But I wasn't afraid!" "Yes, you are so brave, Lily!" Giving each of them a piece of candy as a reward, Nadia headed downstairs to help carry firewood. The water tank was large, with three men carrying it up and placing it on the rooftop. After storing the inflatable boat and rubber shaft, Jasmine pulled a plastic bag out of her large backpack—it contained a snake and two wild rabbits. "We went pretty far. There's a group of villas halfway up the mountain, almost entirely flooded. The water tank was Harry's idea. We were planning to head back after getting it, but then Colby ran further up the mountain." Worried for his safety, they all chased after him, only to find him battling a snake. Harrison reacted quickly, using a military shovel to cut off the snake's head. Everyone was thrilled to get a few pounds of snake meat, but Colby still refused to leave. Unable to drag him away, they followed him further up the mountain, collecting firewood as they went. Eventually, they found Colby digging into a rabbit burrow. "Nadia, you've really struck gold with this dog. He's no ordinary dog; he's practically a genius." Nadia laughed. "Colby's been a stray for years. His survival skills far surpass ours." Jasmine was in awe. "I've never seen such a clever dog—he even climbed up a tree! If it weren't for Harry, he wouldn't have come back before nightfall." Greed was natural in dogs, but only a dog that had experienced real hunger developed an instinct to hoard food. Thinking back to the time they caught that wild boar, it was no wonder Colby wasn't willing to come back. He would be likelier to bolt straight into the mountains. Though she hadn't joined them on the outing, she contributed by holding down the fort while Colby played the role of the great hunter. They decided to split everything evenly. Nadia felt it was too generous, but Jasmine and the others insisted. "Colby is one of us, and we can't treat him differently. He works as hard as we do. If it bothers you, just take charge of cooking, and we'll help." In the end, Nadia didn't take the lead in cooking. Instead, she guided Harrison with the meal preparation in the kitchen. The snake was skinned and gutted before it was cooked together with black beans in a pressure cooker. On the other hand, the two large rabbits were prepared, one in a braised style and the other spicy. They also whipped up stir-fried vegetables and other dishes, resulting in everyone feeling stuffed."Nadia, we're planning to return there tomorrow," Caleb asked. "Would you like to join?" The wealthy villa owners had already evacuated, so there was no hope for food supplies. However, many of the wooden furnishings could be chopped up for firewood. Additionally, the water tank was quite useful on the rooftop. They decided to bring back a few more, installing one for each household to make it easier than catching rainwater from the balcony. Harrison suddenly said, "There are plenty of water tanks over there. We should bring back several. If it stops raining, the water supply won't resume immediately, so we need a storage plan." Caleb and the others paused, then quickly agreed. He and Nadia were both resourceful, so as long as the others followed and practiced, they wouldn't go wrong. Nadia agreed. "Jasmine, we need someone to stay behind. Who do you think should go?" Jasmine, who had been cooped up too long, quickly volunteered, "I'll go, but Colby has to come with me." "Woof!" The dog barked in agreement. "I want to go too!" Lily raised her hand excitedly. "I can help gather firewood." Harrison wanted her to experience the outside world. "Fine, but no crying." "I won't cry," Lily said proudly, rubbing her hip. "I fell today and didn't cry." So, they decided Nadia would stay at the base, and Colby would go in her place. In the middle of the night, she was suddenly woken by loud noises downstairs that went on for a while. She saw Colby lying calmly in his dog bed, so she rolled over and went back to sleep. … The next morning, as she lay in bed, the dog excitedly tugged at her blanket. Human, hurry up and clean up after me. I’m about to go out to work. Nadia yawned and got up, prepared some chicken breast mixed with dog food, and applied ointment to Colby's rash before putting on his raincoat. Lunch would be simple to keep things low-key—plain rice porridge with dry dog food that was packed warm in a thermos. Colby grabbed the bag with his mouth, opened the door, and looked back at her, as if to say, Human, I’m going out to earn some food. Stay at home and don’t wander around. Nadia couldn’t help but laugh as she hugged the dog. "Alright, be careful, don’t push yourself too hard." The door to Harrison’s room opened, and Lily came out wearing a raincoat. "I want a hug too." It seemed that Harrison had talked with her since the little one was becoming more confident in expressing her emotions. She now greeted Jasmine and the others, a stark contrast to the timid and scared girl from when they first met. The dog walked at the back, not forgetting to look back at her with a bit of reluctance. The only difference now was that, after training with Harrison, the dog seemed to have gained a sense of responsibility. Nadia closed the door and went to the balcony. Not long after, she saw a group of people and a dog rowing away in the speedboat. As soon as they left, Hunter’s team appeared in their inflatable boat, following them. It wasn’t just Hunter; Wayne and others also trailed behind, along with residents from other buildings. Unknowingly, the 18th floor had become a trendsetter. They were puzzled. Despite all of us going out to search for supplies, why is it that the 18th floor always returns with a full load, while we can’t even find firewood? The gap between people is just so obvious! It doesn't matter. Since we can't compete or join in, we can only try to follow. Nadia counted and realized there were quite a few following them quietly. Though they had been targeted, she wasn’t worried. Harrison would be able to shake them off. After breakfast, she read her medical books, and at around ten, Elizabeth came for acupuncture. After a few days of treatment, Elizabeth's back had improved significantly. She no longer needed assistance from her family to go upstairs. Elizabeth was in a good mood, holding onto Nadia’s hand without letting go. "Nadia, the Xerris got robbed last night. It’s truly karma." It was the woman who had come to ask Nadia for medicine, throwing a tantrum and causing a scene. In the middle of the night, someone had pried open their door, knocked the woman out with a blow to the head, and stolen all their food supplies. When she woke up and started causing a scene again, she even went to Hunter early in the morning, demanding that everyone’s door be opened so she could search their homes. Even with the courage, Hunter wouldn’t have dared to organize such a search, especially after hearing how much food the Xerri Family had lost. He became frustrated on the spot. There were over two hundred pounds of rice, flour, and oil, as well as plenty of oil, cured meats, and pickled vegetables. "That’s probably an exaggeration. No one would hoard so much food in their house." Elizabeth shook her head repeatedly. "The people who had lent her food are furious. They rushed over to argue, calling her immoral and saying she deserved to be robbed." Nadia listened from the side, "You should be careful too." Elizabeth, sharp as ever, replied, "We don’t have any food left. Now, we only eat one meal a day, and that’s barely enough to fill us up." … By noon, the others still hadn’t returned. The water tower repair shouldn’t take much longer, but Nadia felt a little anxious about Colby. She really wanted to make a call, but there was no signal. Every fifteen minutes, she would look out from the balcony. Finally, around three in the afternoon, Harrison finally appeared. She did a quick headcount and saw everyone, including Colby at the bow, looking like a triumphant warrior. Nadia went downstairs to help, but as soon as the inflatable boat approached, she sensed something was off!
