She Was Reborn 10 Minutes Before the Apocalypse… What Happened Next Shocked Everyone

Chapter 38 Finding a Pig

Glancing at the man, Nadia turned around to find Levi and the others and asked them to try on the mink coats. "The mall only has ten pieces, and the styles and sizes might not be ideal, but there's really no other way to spend this money." While trying on a coat, Caleb teased, "Why do I feel like I'm being kept by a sugar mommy?" Nadia looked at him with disdain. "Sorry, you're not my type." The two bantered back and forth, while the man approached again. "Miss, we can negotiate the price if you really want them." The man still dared to approach with all four of them standing together. It seemed unlikely he was there to rob or scam them. Nadia explained the situation, and both Levi and Caleb were quite pleased. They even grabbed some of the grain and tasted it. "Feels about the same as the stuff you get in stores.""Rest assured, the quality is top-notch," the man said, excited about unexpectedly landing a big order. "I only have 5 kilograms, but I can arrange it if you want more." The four huddled together for a discussion, and Harrison voiced his concerns. "We can buy it, but we need to be careful they don't double-cross us." The safest approach was to split the transaction into multiple deliveries. After finalizing their plan, Nadia returned to the man. "We'll take 250 kilograms, but we want to split the pickups. We'll collect 50 kilograms each day, right here at the department store entrance." The man hesitated briefly. "I can't make that decision, but I can ask now. Please wait a moment." After saying that, he hurriedly left the store. Nadia set aside 500,000. After securing all the essentials, she had some budget left, so she grabbed another mink coat to round it out. She had brought several vacuum bags and packed all the clothing and bedding upon payment. It was quite a sight to see someone splurge 500,000 in an instant with so many people penniless and hungry. The cashier's eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, thinking they'd encountered a wasteful spendthrift. As soon as they left the department store, a shifty-looking man was already waiting at the entrance. "Our boss agreed to the deal; we can start the transaction." He subtly glanced toward a masked man not far away, who was holding a heavy burlap sack. They exchanged looks and moved to a secluded corner. Harrison walked over to inspect the goods, giving a nod to Nadia after confirming the quality. Only then did Nadia hand the prepared black trash bag filled with 100,000 to the shifty man, who quickly stuffed it into his large backpack and began counting. With military forces maintaining order at the department store, no one dared to pull any tricks for fear of getting shot. After the money and goods were exchanged, they agreed on the next transaction time and left the department store with their grain, immediately boarding their inflatable boat to depart. The boat was loaded with supplies hence Levi and Caleb stayed vigilant, scanning their surroundings. Harrison also steered in a different direction, taking a detour to avoid crowded areas. Though the detour was much longer, it offered a clearer line of sight, allowing them to spot anyone approaching from a distance. Suddenly, Levi, who was using binoculars, exclaimed, "What's that?" Caleb followed his gaze. "Is that a corpse floating over there?"Nadia took the binoculars, staring intently for a while. "It looks like a pig." A pig? The group was shocked and observed more closely. "It's a pig, and it's alive!" A live pig was something they hadn't seen in ages. Dog meat is off-limits, but pig meat is fine, right? They slowed down the boat, changing course to approach the pig floating in the floodwaters. It was indeed a live pig, and it was quite large from the look of its head. Pigs could swim, but this one was no match for the vast floodwaters and was just drifting along. It didn't seem frightened when it saw them approaching and even made sounds as if it was asking for help. They paddled closer, blocking the pig's way with an oar. Caleb leaned over and grabbed one of its front legs. The pig squealed and struggled but not too fiercely, likely exhausted from being in the water for so long. Finally, they managed to haul the pig onto the boat with combined effort. Though it had a large frame, it looked starved. It likely weighed around 100 kilograms. The pig lay on the inflatable boat, panting heavily with its mouth wide open, making noises. Suddenly, Nadia pulled out a stun baton from her bag, and the pig let out two shrill cries before it went limp, knocked out cold. Levi and Caleb were speechless while Harrison simply said, "Let's find a place to slaughter it." They couldn't bring it back with them; getting caught with it would be a big problem. Caleb quickly recovered from the shock. "How about the construction site where we found building materials? It's deserted, and it's not too far from here." Then, they turned the boat in another direction. There were several half-constructed buildings submerged in water about six to seven kilometers away. After securing the boat, the three men carried the pig ashore while Nadia handed over the butcher knife. She didn't join in on the slaughter and instead used the time to explore the upper floors of the building. The higher she went, the more building materials she found. There were bricks, cement, and steel rods in abundance. Nadia just took as much as she could. Her underground garden space had over 1,800 cubic meters, and she needed to figure out a way to stock it full. Hence, she collected everything. These items might not seem useful now, but they'd be essential for post-earthquake reconstruction. This location was accessible to anyone, so she wasn't worried about Levi and the others suspecting her. By the time she came down, the pig had already been butchered. Levi and Caleb assisted with resident 1801 in charge. They were discussing how to divide up the pork. Everyone except Nadia was a complete novice in the kitchen. Despite being ruthless with a knife in battle, Harrison couldn't even cook a pot of porridge without burning it. They were completely clueless about handling pork, let alone the offal. So, they decided to split the pork into four parts and give the offal to Nadia as an extra. Nadia didn't hesitate. "Sure, I'll cook it and invite you all over." Harrison took half of the pig while the rest was split between Levi and Caleb. He asked Nadia, "Which half do you want?" "The upper half."The lower half had more meat, but the pig head could be braised, and the skull could be used for soup. Feeling like he was getting the better end of the deal, Harrison cut off an extra portion for her. Nadia noticed but didn't say anything. Given the limitations at home, she instructed them to cut the meat into smaller pieces and pack it into black plastic bags, making it impossible to tell what was inside. Levi voiced his concerns, "Are you sure no one will notice us cooking meat?" "We're on the top floor. The smell will drift upwards even if some of it leaks. Any scent that escapes will be washed away by the rain as long as we keep the doors and windows shut. It should be fine." Levi was thrilled. "Great, let's celebrate tonight." Living in misery for so long, they needed some excitement. "How about we cook it together? It'd be a waste to cook separately and make the smell even stronger," Caleb suggested, eager to foster camaraderie with the aloof Harrison. "Let's unite as one happy family on the 18th floor." Levi agreed. "Nadia, you're the best cook among us. How about you take charge?" Seeing no objections from Harrison, Nadia agreed. "I've got chili powder. Let's have a barbecue." Everyone's mouth watered at the thought of barbecue, and they had no objections. Returning to the SOHO Community, their loot once again stirred up a commotion. The boat was filled with supplies, sparking envy so intense that it made people's eyes turn red. Many wanted to join the 18th floor, but they weren't accepting any new members. The four had planned ahead, stuffing the rice and pork into large backpacks, leaving only the winter clothing and bedding visible.Even trying to be low-key didn't help because the jealousy was palpable. However, what could they do? The 18th floor was full of troublemakers, especially that knife-wielding young woman.
