From Betrayal to Brilliance: She Rose Stronger Than Ever

Chapter 293 Hidden Motives

"Go ahead," Zaden said. Athena didn't beat around the bush. "Can you look into Roxanne's connection with Maya? I think she's the one who leaked that video." Zaden's face darkened, his expression tense. The medical institute was the place he had arranged for Athena, and now there was a mole inside. It felt like he had put her in danger himself, and that thought made him feel awful. "Alright, I'll find out right away," he said in a low voice. "If it's her, I'll have the director fire her immediately." Athena quickly stopped him. "Wait. Don't rush. Check first. If she really has ties with Maya, we can't alert her yet. I have other ways to handle this." Zaden nodded silently. After ending the call, Athena let out a long sigh. Even abroad, she couldn't relax. Maya's reach was everywhere. She had to stay sharp and guard herself at all times. About five minutes later, Zaden texted her back. "Dr. Wood full name is Roxanne Wood. She and Maya graduated from the same school." Athena read Zaden's message, her brows tightening as a sharp glint flashed in her eyes. Just as she suspected. She finally found the person behind it! It was Roxanne. Right then, someone called out to her. "Athena! What are you doing here? You need to get to the operating room. Dr. Wood's been looking all over for you!"It was one of the interns. When she saw Athena, she hurried over and said, "What are you doing here? Dr. Wood has been looking for you several times. She said the simulation surgery needs to start right away. You better get going; don't keep her waiting." Athena's lips curved into a mocking smile. "Got it." When Athena returned to the operating room, fully dressed for the procedure, she saw Roxanne waiting. Roxanne's face carried a trace of irritation. The moment she saw Athena, her frown softened, though the annoyance in her eyes was still obvious. Putting on a fake smile, Roxanne walked over, pretending to care. "Athena, where were you just now? We've been looking everywhere! We're running out of time. Let's start the stimulation surgery right away." Her tone was sharp and anxious, as if she were afraid of something, constantly urging Athena to begin. Athena said calmly, "I've changed my mind. I don't feel like starting this morning. Let's do it this afternoon." Roxanne froze for a second. She had assumed Athena ran off earlier because she was nervous or scared, which secretly pleased her; nervousness often led to failure. But she hadn't expected Athena to cancel it altogether. The visiting professors were scheduled to come in the morning. If Athena postponed until the afternoon, they'd miss the whole thing. Roxanne frowned slightly, clearly displeased. "Athena," she said, "we're all ready. Everyone's been waiting for you. Are you really planning to waste everyone's time?" By the end, her tone had grown sharp and firm. Her voice was so firm that even the interns nearby trembled, fear flashing across their faces.Athena, however, stayed composed. "Dr. Wood, performing the simulation this afternoon shouldn't be a problem for you, right? Or is there something you're not telling me? If there's an issue, let's talk about it." Roxanne clenched her jaw, holding back the words that almost slipped out. She was only in charge of guiding Athena through the surgery simulation. Even if something went wrong, it would be Athena's failure—not hers. How could she possibly be blamed? Taking a deep breath, Roxanne calmed herself and put on a mask of concern. "Athena," she said softly, "I know you're nervous, but that's normal. This is just a mental hurdle. You'll be fine once you push through it." Athena looked at her and gave a faint, mocking smile. If she hadn't learned from Zaden that Roxanne was connected to Maya, she might have believed this act of fake kindness. But now that she knew the truth, there was no way she'd play along. Athena smiled lightly. "You're right. I am nervous, so I'll need to wait until this afternoon to perform the surgery. Thanks for understanding, Dr. Wood." Roxanne's expression froze. She was surprised that Athena would insist on delaying the simulation even after all her persuasion. Arguing any further would only make her seem suspicious. Swallowing her irritation, Roxanne forced a smile. Fine. If she couldn't trip Athena up today, she'd just send the video to Maya later. That would cause enough trouble for her. ... Athena returned to the hotel to get some rest. Zaden wasn't there. She picked up her phone and called him. "Where are you?" she asked."I'm in a meeting at Storm Group's overseas branch," Zaden replied, sounding surprised. "Did something happen? Stay at the hotel for now. I'll deal with that doctor later."
