She Wore Many Masks, and Ruled Them All
"Did you find something?" Beth’s eyes lit up with a spark of hope. "I did," Sloane said carefully, sitting beside her. "But I can’t confirm it yet. Give me a few more days. When everything’s clear, whatever you decide, I’ll support you." Beth looked at her, and tears spilled from her eyes before she could stop them. She grasped Sloane’s hand tightly, her voice trembling. "I wish you were our daughter…" Seeing her break down, Sloane felt a sharp ache in her chest. She wrapped her arms around Beth gently, feeling her shoulders tremble. "Don’t be afraid… I’ll find a way to help you." Beth’s sobs deepened at those words. Her tears soaked through Sloane’s shoulder as she clung to her, desperate, as though holding on to her last shred of hope. "I’m sorry… I lost control," Beth whispered after a long silence. She lifted her head, hastily wiping away her tears. Her makeup was smudged, but she tried to smile. "You shouldn’t have to see me like this." Sloane handed her a tissue with a warm smile. "Don’t worry, I won’t make you pay for the dry cleaning." Beth blinked, then gave a shaky laugh. She patted Sloane’s hand lightly. "Thank you, Sloane. I do feel better after crying it out." Sunlight slipped through the cracks of the curtains, scattering golden light across the room. Between them, the air felt soft and calm. Without her usual composure and strength, Beth looked different—gentler, almost tender. "You…" "Come on now," Beth interrupted with a smile, eyes filled with genuine warmth. "No need to be so formal." "Madam Beth," Sloane said obediently, adjusting her tone. Beth chuckled softly. "That’s better." "Anyway," Sloane continued, her expression turning serious again, "don’t sign the papers yet. Try to delay it for a few more days. And be careful around Dania. Don’t meet her alone if you can help it."Beth’s sharp intuition caught the implication immediately. "Is there something wrong with Dania?" Sloane nodded gravely. "If my guess is right, she’s extremely dangerous." Beth’s face hardened. "Alright. I’ll be careful." While Sloane went to see Beth, Lucas went to meet Kaizen to discuss their next move. He told Kaizen everything—Sloane’s suspicions, her master’s message, and the possibility of the Soul Guild’s dark magic. Kaizen stared at him in disbelief. "That’s… unreal. You’re saying this kind of sorcery actually exists?" He still leaned toward believing Tony had simply fallen for someone else—that it was just betrayal, not witchcraft. Lucas’s voice was calm but firm. "I know it sounds impossible. But for Beth’s sake, we have to investigate. If the Soul Guild really has survivors, it could endanger more than just her—it could threaten your entire family." Kaizen frowned deeply, silent for a long moment before nodding slowly. "You’re right. Beth’s my only sister. I won’t let her face that kind of danger." He rose from his chair and walked to the window, staring out at the city below. "So what’s next?" "Sloane’s master is already on the way here," Lucas said quickly. "Before she arrives, we’ll need your cooperation." Kaizen turned back to him, eyes sharp. "What do you need me to do?" "First, assign guards to protect Beth around the clock," Lucas said. "And use the divorce papers to stall Dania for as long as possible." "Consider it done," Kaizen replied without hesitation.
