Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
She looked through the binoculars for a long time but still could not find the top official. So she said a few words to Cassian, then stood up and walked out, feeling bored. The room was packed with people. Everyone was quiet and serious. She knew she would have to wait until the lesson ended to stop anyone. Anyway, they only wanted to meet the base leader as soon as possible. They were not here to listen. With Cassian and Angus staying inside to keep watch, that was enough. She wasn't going to sit there through a lecture. The wooden door was very heavy. She had to push hard to open it. When it opened, it made a loud creak. The believers were listening so closely that no one noticed Natalie leaving. The cult leader on the high stage and the women in white did notice someone leave. But they only thought the person had an urgent need and didn't bother with it. Natalie closed the door behind her. When she turned around, she met the eyes of two girls guarding the door. "Blessed be! Sister, do you need something? "If you need to use the restroom, you'll have to go outside and find a place yourself. The restroom here doesn't work." Natalie waved her hand. "No, not that. I just came out to get some fresh air." The two girls looked at each other, then gave Natalie a strange look. They couldn't understand why anyone would leave instead of listening to the Shepherd. After all, the Shepherd was sharing the god's words and holy messages! The girls on door duty wished they could sit down and listen to, but they didn't have the chance. They could only stand outside the door and listen carefully. Natalie ignored their looks and asked casually, "Hey, can I ask you something?"The two girls hesitated. They didn't really want to chat right now. First, they were on duty. Even though no one was coming in anymore, they still had to stay at their post. This was a sacred hall, and they were not supposed to talk casually. Second, they still wanted to keep listening to the lesson. Today, Shepherd was teaching something new. Even though they could hear it again tomorrow when another group came in, that would mean they were behind the believers inside. Natalie could see their reluctance. She took two chocolate bars from her pocket and held them out as a friendly gesture. "It won't take much of your time." The two girls quickly waved their hands. "No, no!" At first, Natalie thought they were just being polite. But after they refused twice, she realized they truly did not want them. She raised an eyebrow in surprise. Before the disasters, and even after the apocalypse, small gifts like this were rarely refused. Especially now, two chocolate bars were worth as much as gold used to be. Anyone else would have accepted them with a big smile. But since they clearly didn't want them, Natalie didn't force it. She put the chocolate back into her pocket and stayed quiet. The two girls looked at Natalie standing there in a daze, then glanced at the tightly closed door. After a moment, one of them finally spoke. "Sister, what do you want to ask?" She pointed to the side, asking Natalie to step away so they wouldn't disturb the believers inside. Natalie followed them a short distance away and smiled. "It's nothing important. I just want to ask about someone." As soon as she said that, one girl's face turned uneasy. "I'm afraid we can't help you. There are too many believers here. It's hard for us to know everyone." The other girl nodded. "That's right. The people you see in that room are only a small part of us. The number of believers we actually deal with is huge." Natalie already knew this. She had heard a woman say that almost all the survivors in the city were now believers of this cult. But the person she was asking about wasn't some unknown nobody. So she continued, "The person I'm looking for is someone you should know." She took out the family photo that belonged to Angus and pointed at one face. "He's the leader of the official base in the eastern region." The two girls looked at the face she pointed to and suddenly understood. "Oh, you mean Xavier Forge? Yes, we do know him." Natalie raised an eyebrow. He was a leader, after all, yet these two young girls called him by his name so casually. It seemed that in this city, the cult leader's status was higher than that of the government leader. At least, she had never once heard anyone speak the fat guy's name directly. Everyone always called him "the Shepherd" with great respect. Natalie nodded. "Yes, that's him. I heard he came here today, too. Why didn't I see him inside?" One of the girls replied, "Yes, he did come. He arrived early and sat in the third row. You were sitting in the back, with so many people in between. Of course, you couldn't see him."Natalie paused for a moment. "The third row?" Xavier was the top leader of the entire eastern region. She thought he would at least have a reserved seat or be sitting in the very front.
