Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Natalie smiled calmly and began counting down. "Three. "Two. "One." With a loud bang, the front door that the innkeeper hadn't had time to lock was violently flung open again. The person who opened it was still Selina. Her teeth chattered uncontrollably, her entire body trembling violently. She hugged herself with both arms, her head covered in snow and her face deathly pale, as if she might pass out from the cold at any second. Natalie glanced at her. Not bad. At least she knew to run back when it got too cold. She wasn't completely stupid. Guinevere looked at Natalie with some amazement. She'd actually nailed it. Natalie smiled. Selina running back was inevitable. If the roads outside were passable, would she and Cassian be holed up in this weird inn? They would've left ages ago. Even the innkeeper, who knew the routes really well, had taken an hour to walk what should've been a three-to-five-minute trip. How could Selina, an outsider, possibly find the Greendale Gang in this kind of extreme blizzard? Not a chance. Besides, the temperature outside was even lower than during the day. It was truly bone-chilling cold. The body's survival instincts would naturally drive her back to somewhere relatively warm nearby. There was no way she'd keep running around outside. Seeing that Guinevere had already run to Selina's side, crying while hugging her and trying to warm her up, Natalie turned and headed upstairs with the three little ones. She was just passing through this place and didn't plan to meddle in other people's business. Whether Anthony had been killed by the innkeeper couple or by the Greendale Gang, it had nothing to do with her. She wasn't some vigilante who had to pick a fight with every local gang she came across. As long as they didn't provoke her, she'd just wait comfortably until the snow stopped, then immediately set out to finish collecting supplies from the southern warehouse before heading home to relax. In weather this cold, the only place to be was in a warm home, asleep. The innkeeper couple watched her departing figure and exchanged a meaningful glance. Back in the room, Natalie found Cassian still reading that book, "After Winning the CEO's Heart, I Had Seven Babies." She couldn't help but twitch her lips. "Is it really that good?" Cassian put down the book and gave his honest assessment. "It's pretty cheesy. But I can't stop reading it." Natalie burst out laughing. "Sounds like you're hooked." Then she sighed. "Downstairs is an absolute circus, but you're up here completely oblivious." Cassian's lips curved upward. "Just following my wife's orders. I stayed in the room the whole time." Natalie smiled. "Good job! The temperature outside has dropped quite a bit. Let's close the car doors to trap some heat. I still have plenty of heat packs. We'll stick them on ourselves before bed."Cassian replied, "Okay." ... Meanwhile, the innkeeper and his wife finally managed to help Guinevere convince Selina to go back to her room. They quickly cleaned up the first floor, then hurried back to their own room. The temperature was getting lower. Staying in a small room versus staying in the main hall were two completely different temperatures. Since Selina had just let in so much cold air downstairs, it was even less suitable to linger there. Once inside, the innkeeper's wife lit two candles and placed them on the table, using them both for light and to warm their hands. "Tell me, since that brat already drank my cursed water, why isn't she the least bit friendly toward me?" The innkeeper frowned. "Right! She even pointed a gun at you." The innkeeper's wife's brow furrowed deeply. "You think maybe they didn't drink the water you sent up at all?" The man shook his head. "Impossible! Water is so precious. Why wouldn't they drink water that's free?" The innkeeper's wife countered, "Food is precious too! But they didn't eat the free meal we offered either." The innkeeper waved his hand dismissively. "That's different. Look at them. They only have two backpacks between them. How much water could they possibly be carrying? Maybe they have enough hardtack crackers and chocolate bars, but could they really have enough water?" The innkeeper's wife thought for a moment. "True. Besides, we boiled the water before sending it up. Logically, that shouldn't raise too much suspicion." The innkeeper nodded. "They've got those three animals. They could use them to test for poison. They probably had that rabbit or bird or whatever drink first, and when nothing happened, the people felt safe drinking it too."As he spoke, he pulled his wife closer. "Don't worry. That crazy woman has such a wild and straightforward temper. If she didn't want to drink the water, she would've refused it outright or brought it back herself. She wouldn't have sent down an empty thermos." The innkeeper's wife pondered for a moment, then nodded. "You're right." That crazy girl never gave anyone the courtesy. When invited to dinner, she said all kinds of nasty things. If she'd truly suspected something was wrong with the water, she definitely would've made some sarcastic comment like, "I'm not drinking your sketchy stuff." It was unlikely she'd sneakily pour out the water on purpose and return an empty thermos to them. However... The innkeeper's wife frowned, utterly puzzled. "Then why is her attitude toward me so terrible? The cursebug has never failed before!" Just look at how normal Selina and Guinevere's reactions were. Even though their boyfriend had fallen for her instead, they could still respectfully call her by name.
