Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Olivia noticed Natalie staring at the baby poster on the wall, and a bittersweet smile formed on her lips. She rubbed her tired eyes and reached back to shut the door. That's when she suddenly spotted Natalie's little white puppy, Lucky. Lucky was so tiny that Olivia almost closed the door on her. She quickly stopped the door in time, waiting for the puppy to wander in before shutting it all the way. She laughed and patted Lucky on the head. "Hey, little one, I almost didn't see you there." Lucky sniffed her hand and then gently nudged it with her head before running over to Natalie. Animals were sensitive to humans' intention.Natalie noticed that, of all the people Lucky had met, Olivia was the only one who didn't show a greedy look. She was also one of the rare few that Lucky didn't bare her teeth at. "Don't you ever get tempted to eat her? You must be starving." Natalie was blunt as always. Olivia looked surprised—she hadn't expected that question from Natalie. She glanced down at Lucky. "I used to have a dog too. Her name was Nina, and she was a pug. I raised her for fourteen years before she passed away two years ago. "My husband wanted to get me another dog, but since we were planning on having a baby, we decided not to. We wouldn't have had the energy to take care of it right. "Dogs are the most loyal friends a person can have. They're like children to me—I could never bring myself to hurt one." Natalie could see she was getting emotional, so she dropped the topic and handed Olivia some food she'd taken from Braxton's place. "Here. I just raided a house and ended up with this." Natalie didn't even want to keep Tiffany and Braxton's stuff, not even in her storage space. But she hated wasting food—especially these days. So she just gave it to Olivia. Olivia thought Natalie had come by to ask her for help. She was surprised when she realized Natalie was just dropping off supplies. She quickly waved her hands dismissively. "Natalie, you've already helped me a lot. I can't just keep taking your things for free!" Natalie replied, "It's not for free. I saw all those medical books in your place. You must be a pretty skilled doctor, right? "Just take these as an advance payment. If I ever need medical help, I'll come to you." Olivia shook her head. "You don't have to pay me for that, Natalie. If you ever need anything, I'll do my best to help you—no strings attached." Natalie ignored her protests and set the food on the coffee table. "You lost your husband and your child, but you're still determined to survive. I get the feeling you still have something important you want to do, right?" Natalie stared into Olivia's eyes. "But honestly, in your current state, I doubt you'll make it. If you want to achieve anything, you'll need a healthy body. Once you've eaten, you can stay in bed for a few days to get your strength back." Natalie's words struck home, and Olivia felt her nose tingle and her eyes sting with tears. That's how people are—when they're alone, they can be as tough as they want. But the moment someone shows them a little kindness, their heart softens and the tears start to fall. She had been barely holding it together lately. She could feel her body getting weaker, and it felt like she could collapse at any moment. But she couldn't give up—if she stopped searching for food, it was basically giving up on life. And if she died, who would be left to get revenge for her husband? With Natalie's supplies, she could actually rest for a few days and build her strength back up. She hesitated and finally gave in. "Thank you, Natalie. I'll get stronger, and I'll keep going." After a pause, she added, "I hope you never need my medical skills, but if you do, I'll be there for you, no matter what." Natalie nodded, then quickly excused herself without lingering for small talk. "Get some rest. We're heading home now." Natalie wasn't some saint—not even close. She'd often walked right past people in trouble. But she wasn't a heartless monster, either. She liked Olivia because she wasn't greedy and knew her limits. Besides, she seemed brave and grateful, too. On top of all that, she was even a doctor. Even in video games, every team needed a healer. In an apocalyptic world like this, befriending a good doctor could only be a plus. After leaving Olivia's, Natalie walked up to the fourteenth floor and found someone waiting by her door. It was Harold. He turned at the sound of footsteps—tense at first, but he relaxed when he saw Natalie. A big grin spread across his face. "My idol! So you were out. No wonder you didn't answer when I knocked." Natalie noticed he was holding something large in a black plastic bag. "Yeah, I had to step out for a bit. What's up?" Harold scratched his head, looking a bit embarrassed.. "Nothing much, really. It's just that the queen of my house—uh, that's my mom—she really loves the snacks you gave her. We've got plenty of regular food, but not any of those cheese wafers, cheese sticks, or potato chips. Do you happen to have any extra?" His family was well-stocked on regular food, but not those snacks.
