Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
"I used to hang out with Lillian a lot back then, so I told her about it without thinking. "I never thought she would take it so seriously. She bought some aromatic candles that are bad for the heart ... Well, it's not harmful for everyone, but if someone already has heart problems, smelling them can make palpitations worse. "She even rubbed the candle scent on my clothes ... " Jacob paused. "At that time, I didn't know. It smelled light and pleasant, so I kept using it. Over time, your mom's heart got weaker. It got especially bad whenever she was near me. That's when I realized something was wrong. "When I finally got the truth from Lillian and stopped using that aromatic candle, it was already too late. "Not long after, your mom had a heart attack and passed away ... " Jacob's eyes filled with tears. "It's all because of Lillian! That cruel woman made your mom ... " Natalie looked at him, crying, and immediately thought, Crocodile tears. It was disgusting to watch, but she clenched her fists and forced herself to keep listening. Jacob tried to defend himself. "I made the mistake any man could make. And Lillian was my childhood sweetheart. We had feelings for each other before I met your mom. Who would've guessed she could be so cruel? "But don't worry, Nat. I already got revenge for your mom! Lillian and that Derek—I set them up ... " Before he could finish, Natalie interrupted. "Derek?" Derek had been their family driver for years, so Natalie knew him well. "What does he have to do with this?"As soon as she said his name, Jacob got angry. "Your mom's death had nothing to do with him. But she dared to cheat on me. I wouldn't let that slide!" Cheat on Jacob? Natalie knew her mother. She would never be involved with the driver. It didn't take her long to figure it out—it must have been Lillian, together with Derek, who betrayed him behind his back. She let out a cold laugh. "Did you kill Lillian to get revenge for my mom, or for yourself?" Jacob snapped out of his anger and hurried to explain, "Of course it was for your mom! Dealing with Derek was just a bonus ... " Natalie didn't believe him. "If it was really for my mom, why the heck did you wait until now?" Everything Jacob said made it sound like it was all Lillian's fault. But Natalie noticed the biggest problem: "If none of this was your fault, then when you found out the truth, why didn't you call the police? Why didn't you tell Grandma?" Jacob mumbled, "Family matters shouldn't be exposed. And your grandma was old. I was afraid she couldn't handle it." Natalie sneered. "Afraid she couldn't handle it? Don't forget—she literally died of anger because of you! When you brought Lillian into the house, did you even think if Grandma could handle that?" "I ... " Jacob was suddenly at a loss for words. Natalie pressed on. "If you were really worried about Grandma or about keeping up appearances, then why did you marry Lillian? Why bring home the woman who killed your wife—and even kick your own daughter out for her?" Looking at Jacob, who couldn't say a word, Natalie's voice grew cold. "Stop telling lies. Your excuses don't make sense. You and Lillian? You're two of a kind."Sweat broke out on Jacob's forehead. He opened his mouth to explain. "I didn't ... " Natalie lifted the triangular bayonet and cut him off with a cold voice. "I want the truth. Lie again and you'll be dead." Jacob still bled from the stab. The bayonet was now inches from his nose, and terror ran over his skin. "N–Nat, please calm down!" he stammered. Lucky, who had been sitting at her side, felt her hooman's anger rise and spun to growl at him fiercely. Seeing those big teeth and the spattering of saliva made Jacob jump. Fear hit him hard, and he shouted, "What do you want from me? I already told you everything I know. What else can I say?" Natalie let out a cold laugh. "You really expect me to believe a bit of aromatic candle could kill someone? Tell me the brand." Jacob's eyes darted around. "I don't know. Lillian used it—how would I know? Maybe it was some old home recipe ... " Natalie kept staring him down. "You're so full of yourself and pretentious. You don't even know the brand? It's not some famous perfumer's candle. And you still let that smell get on your clothes?" Jacob stammered, unable to answer. Natalie pushed the bayonet until it barely touched his throat. "Speak! Tell me exactly what happened." Jacob jumped and stumbled backward. "Don't—don't get so angry! I'll speak! I'll tell you everything I know!"
