Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Lisa gave a short grunt, then said, "We seriously underestimated the Mervyns. I figured drawing them out would only weaken Godfrey a bit. I never thought they'd be strong enough to wipe out his whole crew." She frowned, thinking hard. "The real question is—how did they pull that off ... " Mark, who hadn't finished his report, hurried to add, "Ms. Eland, I don't think the Mervyns had much to do with it ... " Lisa snapped her head to him. "What?" Mark described what he'd seen in the villa area. "Bodies were scattered all over the Hillside Villa District. Only at Villa 1 were the corpses stacked together—and there were a lot. I'm pretty sure the people inside Villa 1 did most of the killing." "What?!" Lisa jumped up, then forced herself back down, her face going dark. She muttered under her breath, "That can't be ... Villa 1 only has two people, and they don't even have guns ... " Then, as if striking on a thought, she ground her teeth and spat out two names. "Bruno! Whitney!" The intel must be wrong! Joe perked up at the mention of Whitney. "Mom ... " Lisa clenched her fists and ignored him. If Godfrey hadn't rushed in first, by her plan, the one lying dead right now would've been her. Just as she was about to order for Whitney and Bruno to be dragged back, Mark continued. "I checked—Villa 1's gate was damaged, probably from Godfrey's blast. There was blood everywhere inside, but no bodies. The bodies were all heaped outside the gate." He added, "My guess is they gunned them down in the yard and then tossed the bodies out. The ones scattered around the neighborhood were probably people who tried to run and were picked off later." One of the men who'd gone with him added, "I also found a few dozen who'd had their throats slit." Lisa felt dizzy. First it was the Mervyns with guns, then suddenly the Hollands, and now slit throats on top of that? Were multiple groups involved? This Hillside Villa District is messier than I thought. Either way, she couldn't afford another reckless strike before she knew what really happened. This defeat was on her—she'd scouted the situation in the first place. Even if none of her people died, if she messed up the follow-up, her men might lose faith. Another "Godfrey" could rise in her ranks any day. Watching her closely, Mark spoke up again. "Ms. Eland, we captured two people in the villa area, but we couldn't get anything out of them ... " Lisa's eyes lit up. "Why didn't you say so sooner? Bring them in!" "Right away!" Soon, two prisoners were dragged in, bound hand and foot. From their looks, Lisa could tell they were a man and a woman. Her eyes narrowed. As they were shoved closer, she realized they weren't Whitney and Bruno at all—just strangers. The man looked 50-ish; the girl, maybe 20. They looked so much alike that it was obvious they were father and daughter.Lisa fixed them with a stare. "Which villa do you live in? What are your names?" The girl glared at the people around her, bit her lip, and refused to speak. The man's eyes were blank, his gaze unfocused, like his mind had shut down. He didn't answer either. Lisa turned to Philbert. He stepped forward and slapped them both hard. "Talk!" They stayed silent. Even when the man was knocked flat, he just stared into space, like he'd been through something unbearable. The girl breathed hard, furious eyes locked on Mark as if she wanted to tear him apart. Lisa looked back at Mark. Mark quickly explained. "There was another woman in their family." He pointed at the girl. "Her mother. I killed her." Lisa understood right away. No wonder their reactions were so strange. Dragged from their home into this room and surrounded by armed men, they showed no fear—only hatred. She shot Mark a look. "What happened exactly? Tell me everything." Mark recounted. "I couldn't find Kennard anywhere. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed their front gate wasn't fully shut, so I slipped inside." One of his men added, "We looked through a window and saw them eating dinner. It was just one man at the table, and the rest were women, none of them fighters. We smashed the window and went in." Mark continued. "The mother had a knife hidden and nearly slashed me. I lost it, grabbed the blade, and stabbed her to death." Lisa gave a small nod. "Good job."
