Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Harold stood up, slipped on his gas mask, and said, "I'll go take a look." He had barely stepped outside when his startled shout came from the yard. "Lucky?" Natalie instantly shot to her feet. "Lucky?" Was that her dog outside? Cassian also stood up, but before they could get out the door, Harold had already brought Lucky inside. "Idol, your dog came looking for you." Natalie and Cassian exchanged a look, both of their eyes filled with surprise. It really was Lucky! But how did she get out? They had locked both the main gate and the yard door when they left. Now this dog not only knew how to open doors, she could pick locks too?? Natalie hurried toward her. "Silly dog, how did you get here?" But Lucky's face was full of grievance, tears streaming down like raindrops. Natalie's heart clenched. She crouched down in worry and asked, "What's wrong with you?" Lucky buried herself in Natalie's arms, rubbing against her, and sobbed even harder. She was as big and strong as a white bear, yet here she was crying like a pitiful child. Olivia spoke up, explaining, "Lucky must've been affected by the fog outside too. It doesn't just work on people. Our animals were restless for quite a while last night." Ghania, sharp-eyed as ever, suddenly went, "Huh?"She pointed at the dog's mouth. "Looks like she's holding something?" Only then did everyone notice that Lucky indeed had something clamped between her teeth, just a little pink corner sticking out. The rest could not be seen. Natalie frowned. "Lucky, what are you holding?" At her words, Lucky looked even more wronged. She first dropped the thing onto the ground, then pawed at it. "Ow ow? Ow ow ow!" You don't love me anymore? You've been sneaking snacks without me! In her simple doggy brain, food was tied directly to love. If her human gave treats to others without her, it meant her love had shifted too. Of course, she was upset! Everyone's eyes quickly fell onto the ripped pink wrapper lying on the floor. Ultra-thin. Snug fit. Just a few printed words, yet they hit like thunder. The room fell into dead silence. Harold, Olivia, and Ghania all glanced at Natalie and Cassian. Natalie and Cassian stayed silent. This had to be the most awkward moment of their lives. How could this silly dog dig up that of all things, and carry it all the way over here? Seeing the guilty looks on their faces, Lucky suddenly puffed up with confidence. Tilting her head, she barked loudly and self-righteously, "Ow ow ow! Ow ow ow!" Caught you! I found your secret strawberry-flavored snacks!Olivia was struggling not to laugh. Harold's face turned scarlet, while Ghania, ever the outspoken one, burst into hearty laughter. "Little Lucky, why are you carrying this around?" Even Cassian, usually so thick-skinned, could not stop the tips of his ears from turning red. This ridiculous dog! Why did she have to drag everything out in the open? Natalie forced a smile, trying desperately to save face. "Lucky, where did you pick this up from? How many times have I told you not to grab random things outside?" Lucky blinked her big, innocent eyes. So not only were you sneaking treats behind my back, but now you're blaming me, too? She straightened her neck and barked a few more times. "Ow ow ow!" This was clearly from our house! Thankfully, no one understood her doggy language; otherwise, the embarrassment would have been unbearable. Ghania and the others were not fooled, but out of consideration for the couple, they did not call them out. Olivia even smoothed things over kindly. "Dogs are like this. They love picking up random things outside." But Lucky, still affected by the fog, could not calm down and kept whining pitifully. Natalie glared at her, then scooped up the wrapper and tossed it into the trash. She leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Just wait till we get home." Lucky's grievance instantly turned into fear. She shrank her neck, tucked her tail, and trembled all over. Natalie twitched her lips at the dramatic act.Really? She never even hit the dog! Yet Lucky acted like she was constantly being abused. The others looked on with both amusement and helplessness. Clearly, the fog's effect was huge, turning their usually cheerful dog into a moody mess. Seeing Lucky about to wet herself from fear, Cassian finally walked back to the table, picked out two slices of sausage from his bowl, and offered them to her. Lucky sniffed, then immediately perked up, tail wagging wildly as she ate with pure delight. She even ran laps around the room afterward, overjoyed. Natalie frowned, remembering her previous life. Was she also like this back then—swinging between extreme highs and lows, like some drama queen? She shook her head, ignored Lucky's theatrics, and urged everyone to continue eating. After the meal, she and Cassian prepared to take the dog with them and head out.
