Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 39 Fair Trades

The girl across from him stared at him seriously, waiting for him to continue. Suddenly, he felt a little nervous. "My mom grew a lot of fresh vegetables, so I can give you some," he said, opening the bag in his hand. Inside were two big bundles of green onions and lettuce. Natalie raised a brow. What is this supposed to mean? In the middle of a disaster, a neighbor was actually offering food? She refused right away. "Thanks, but I don't need it." She never trusted something that seemed too easy. Harold froze for a second. He knew she had plenty of supplies, but living off dry food every day would get old. He figured she had no reason to turn down fresh vegetables. Unless ... she was also growing her own food? Natalie looked at him. "Do you need something else?"Harold thought fast. No, I can't waste this chance to get close to my idol. Then he noticed the steel door behind her, and his eyes lit up. "Do you want me to wire your door so it has electricity?" Natalie blinked. What is this guy trying to do? First, he wanted to give me vegetables; now, he wants to fix my door. Don't tell me he's into me. She felt grossed out. Bro, don't lose your mind over romance right now. I'm not into you. Harold saw her expression and realized she was misunderstanding. He quickly panicked. "Idol, I don't mean anything bad. I just want to be your friend. Times are rough, and the more friends we have, the better." Idol? Natalie almost laughed. So this apocalypse geek had noticed her combat skills and came running to cozy up. Seeing her mood ease a little, Harold hurried on. "I'm useful, I swear. I can do research, design traps, and invent stuff. Back then, a bunch of companies were fighting to hire me ... " Natalie couldn't hold back a laugh. Watching him desperately sell himself was almost funny. Harold was a talent. Thinking it over, she had to admit his electric door idea wasn't bad. So she asked, "What do you want in return for fixing my door?" Harold waved his hand fast. "No payment. I'm free anyway. I can do it for you." But Natalie didn't like taking advantage of people. "I'll pay you with food then. Do you want pasta or snacks?" "Really, it's fine. It's no trouble at all," Harold said. Natalie frowned. "Forget it then. I only do fair trades." Clearly, her idol was very cautious. Harold panicked again. "Okay, snacks then!" Natalie nodded. She figured Harold's family wasn't short on regular food anyway.Once they agreed, Harold ran upstairs excitedly to grab his tools. Natalie turned back inside to finish her meal. If she waited too long, her food would get cold. She had only taken a few bites when she heard Harold already working outside. Natalie didn't go out. She knew nothing about wiring or traps, so she would only get in the way. Better to just eat quietly. After dinner, she dug through her storage and picked out some snacks. Cheese wafers, beef jerky, prunes, sodas, and spicy meat sticks—two packs of each. Remembering Harold's mother, she also grabbed macadamia nuts, one original and one spicy. When she stepped out with the bags, she saw Harold had already wired both hallway doors. He grinned brightly. "I brought a lot of materials, so I also reinforced your steel door. See this part? Flip it open, and you'll have a shooting hole." He explained while showing her how it worked.Natalie glanced at the snacks in her hand. Suddenly, she felt she hadn't given enough. Then she noticed something else—Harold had even cleaned the dried blood stains off the floor in the hall. Wow, he's way too genuine. Feeling a little guilty, Natalie rushed back inside and grabbed even more snacks. She stuffed two whole bags and handed them to Harold. Harold took the bags, stunned. This wasn't before the disaster, when snacks meant nothing. Now, a single pack of beef jerky was enough for people to fight over. Yet Natalie gave him piles of it, just for a little wiring job that had been simple for him. Harold looked at her with even more respect. Natalie felt uncomfortable under his stare. What's with that look? Does he think I didn't give enough? "Idol, do you want me to upgrade your front door too?" Harold glanced at Unit 1402's entry door and thought, As expected of my idol. Her security is insane. Not just two doors in the hallway, but even her front door is a steel armor door. Three layers of doors meant three layers of safety. Natalie couldn't help but smile at his boundless energy. Since the apocalypse began, everyone she met had been full of gloom. She hadn't seen someone this lively in a long time. "No need. Thanks anyway."
