Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
I can't just shout, right? What if she gets mad and I end up like Mrs. Bolton and Saniya? Ugh, Dad and Mom are the worst. Why do they always make me do these stupid things? Rosalie hesitated for a while, not knowing what to do. Finally, she pressed the doorbell. Ring! Ring! She jumped. The doorbell actually worked? Almost no houses in the neighborhood still had working appliances. After all, running power meant burning fuel. Her own house only had enough electricity for the kitchen. They couldn't even use the lights, let alone something as "useless" as a doorbell. Staring at the bell, Rosalie felt a wave of awe. This new tenant must not have been powerful before, but if she could waste fuel like this now, it meant she'd taken plenty of resources by whatever means necessary. She must be ruthless! After a few rings, Natalie came out. Rosalie's carefully prepared humble greeting got stuck in her throat. Her eyes widened. "Natalie? What the ... why are you here?" Natalie frowned. "Rosalie?" All the fear and guesses Rosalie had about the new neighbor vanished, replaced by anger. She shouted, "Natalie! How dare you show your face here? Dad already kicked you out. How can you come crawling back so shamelessly?" Natalie had left too many scars in Rosalie's life. Just seeing her made Rosalie snap. Natalie rolled her eyes. "Is this your house? Mind your own business. I'll live wherever I want." Rosalie's face turned red. "You're here to steal Dad from me again, aren't you?" Natalie smirked. "Better hang on tight to your dear daddy. Otherwise, he might 'accidentally' end up with a few more secret daughters." Rosalie gasped. "Who are you calling a secret daughter?" Natalie gave her a sly grin. "Whoever feels hit by it, that's who." Rosalie stomped her foot. "Ugh! You're as trashy as ever!" Natalie tilted her head back and looked at her down her nose. "If you're so classy, then why are you standing here screaming in my yard? What do you want?" Rosalie was furious, but she couldn't answer. She couldn't exactly say she was sent to flatter Natalie. Natalie would only laugh at her. So she opened her mouth a few times but couldn't get out a single word. Just as she was about to flee, a calm female voice came from behind. "She's here to bring a gift and be nice to her new neighbor." Rosalie turned and saw Olivia and Harold walking in, both smirking. Natalie raised an eyebrow and glanced at the gift box in Rosalie's hand. "Oh? How thoughtful." Rosalie wanted to explode. She glared at Olivia and Harold. What business of theirs was this? But as she glared, she finally recognized Harold's face—then Olivia's too. Weren't they the two who had been with Natalie back at the floating market? No wonder she hadn't recognized Olivia. That shaved head had completely changed her look. Rosalie's face burned. The whole situation was beyond awkward. Just then, a big dog came running toward them from down the street. Rosalie's eyes lit up. She suddenly shouted at Natalie, "This box isn't for you. It's for the stray dog! Look at you, Natalie—are you really so low now that you're fighting dogs for food?" She popped open the box, pulling out the cake Lillian had baked with care. The dog was big, and she was scared to hand-feed her, so she set the cake on the ground and made noises to lure her over. Then she gave Natalie a mocking look. Natalie and the others only smirked deeper as the big white dog bounded closer. The dog quickly ran over and noticed a crowd gathered there. On the ground, there was also a cake. The cake looked and smelled great. Any normal dog would have rushed over to eat it. But this one stopped. She lifted her head and looked at Natalie instead. Natalie smirked. "We don't eat garbage like that. We've got pork knuckle and duck breast ready at home. Let's go eat." The dog barked once, then ran to Natalie's door and pawed at it eagerly. Her paws landed on the cake and smashed it into pieces. This dog was Lucky. After exploring the house all day yesterday, she already knew her way around. But she wasn't familiar with the neighborhood yet, so she'd been begging to go out. Natalie had been busy setting up the power in the house, so she let Lucky roam. Who would have thought Rosalie would mistake her for a stray? Honestly, how dumb could she be? No stray dogs were left anymore—house pets were barely surviving as it was.
