Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
His taste was not bad, just a little tacky. That yellow hair really did look ugly. The man noticed her staring at his hair instead of answering, and for once, he looked a little uneasy. "Hey, pretty girl, I'm talking to you! What are you staring at?" Natalie pulled her gaze back, already impatient. "And you are?" The man frowned. "I asked you a question first, and you still haven't answered." Natalie pointed at the villa. "This is my house. My place, my rules." He froze for a second, then flicked his hair and introduced himself. "I'm Theodore Mervyn." Mervyn? Natalie's guard went up. "How many families with the last name Mervyn live in this place?" He did not get why she was asking, but still answered cheerfully, "Just mine. Why?" Natalie understood immediately. So this was one of the Mervyns from Tyro Group. She gave him a once-over. From his age and the way he dressed, he was probably that young guy who dabbled in animal experiments. She did not like him one bit. Her eyes instinctively flicked to her front door—locked tight, with the three little ones safe inside. She turned back and said, "Nothing, just asking. Do you still need something? I've got work to do." With that, she picked up her paint tools again and went back to patching the wall. She was busy. After finishing the wall, she even planned to make a trip over to Isabelle's place. Theodore watched, dumbfounded. This girl grilled him with questions, then brushed him off like he was nothing? In all of Northlorn, anyone who heard he was a Mervyn would treat him with respect. And she just ... ignored him? Scowling, Theodore said, "Hey, that's pretty rude of you." Natalie did not even look up. "Yep." He blinked. "Huh?" "I really am rude." Natalie finally spared him a glance. "Can you leave now? I'm not just rude, but I've got a bad temper too." Theodore was at a loss for words. He curled his lip. "What, are you planning to kill me too?" Natalie smiled at him, the kind of smile that was hard to read. "Maybe." A chill shot down his spine. The image of her playing with and then butchering Isabelle and Saniya flashed in his mind. This woman had to be a psycho. He had rushed out here to watch the excitement without bringing any weapon. If she snapped again, that would be real trouble ... Catching the wary look in his eyes, Natalie almost laughed. The Mervyns were powerful beyond measure; she would not actually pick a fight. She was just scaring him a little. Theodore stayed quiet, nervous now. However, he did not leave either. Instead, he just stood there silently, watching Natalie paint. She ignored him completely, focusing on her work. Soon, the uneven patches of the wall were all smoothed over. She packed up her tools, ready to head back inside. Theodore quickly called out, "Hey, you're going back in already?" Natalie gave him a look. "What, you still need something?" After hesitating, curiosity got the better of him. "What's your relationship with Cassian?" Natalie raised a brow. So he had been hanging around all this time just to ask that? But wait, how did he even know she knew Cassian? Thinking it over, she realized it must have been Walter and the others talking to the Mervyns. How efficient. It was almost like they wanted to dig up her whole history in minutes. But she was not that easy to pin down. Clearing her throat, she lied smoothly. "I'm Cassian's aunt." "What?" For once, the usually carefree Theodore froze in place. "His aunt?"Natalie nodded. "You're Cassian's friend, right? You can call me Aunt too." Theodore could not bring himself to say it. "You look younger than Cassian, so how could you be his aunt?" Natalie stayed calm. "Younger in age, but older in seniority. Nothing strange about that." She looked so serious, her face practically radiating sincerity. For a moment, Theodore wondered if Cassian had really picked up some sort of godmother outside. But that didn't make sense ... Just then, a Hummer slowly drove past on the main road. Theodore's eyes lit up. He dashed out, waving his hand and shouting, "Hey, Cassian!" The car stopped. Theodore jogged up. "Where are you going? Your aunt's right here!" Cassian got out, frowning. "What aunt?" Theodore shoved his hands in his pockets. "See for yourself." Cassian walked a few steps closer and glanced into the yard. There stood Natalie, arms full of tools. His expression softened, lips curving into a smile. He walked straight in, taking the tools from her hands. "All moved in?" Natalie smiled. "Yep, everything's here." Cassian looked surprised. "That fast?"Natalie leaned in and whispered, "Forgot already? I can teleport. Whoosh, whoosh! So easy."
