Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 316 Going Back

Natalie raised her brows, thinking exactly the same as him. There weren't many people there. Once the fog rolled in, it was hard for anyone to find their way up. As long as they kept an eye on the villa district residents, they would be safe. Most importantly, this place was full of wealthy people. It would help her find high-quality emeralds and upgrade her storage space. But Olivia had some doubts. "I heard the official base is being built real fast. Should we just wait a little longer and move in there?" Harold shook his head. "The apocalypse is unpredictable. If an earthquake hits out of nowhere, this building might not last. We should get out while we can. "We can settle in a new place first, then wait for news about the base. At worst, we'll just have to move one more time. It's not a big deal since we have the car and gas now." Natalie nodded. "I agree." In times of heavy fog, the official base wasn't a safe choice. In the previous life, the base had just been finished when the fog came and the first batch of people had barely moved in. The place that should have been well managed ended up in chaos several times. In short, once the fog hit, the more crowded a place was, the more dangerous it became. Hearing both of them, Olivia also nodded. "Then we'll do it your way." The three of them agreed to check out the hillside villas. If they found a good place, they'd start moving in over the next couple of days. In her previous life, when Natalie went there, more than half the houses were already empty.Even the rich couldn't survive four straight years of apocalypse. But now, the apocalypse had only been a little over two years. Things definitely wouldn't be that bad yet. Natalie went back to her room, changed her clothes, strapped on her weapons, and left a note for Cassian before heading out. Ghania stayed behind with Lucky to watch over the house. The three of them got into Natalie's van and drove straight to the hillside villas. It used to be Natalie's home, so she knew the way even without checking the map. Olivia sat in the passenger seat, looking at her closely. After a while, she couldn't help asking, "Nat, are you sure you're okay with living there?" Natalie kept her eyes on the road and asked in confusion, "What do you mean?" "I mean, your dad and stepsister live there too," Olivia said softly. She still remembered the fight between Natalie and Rosalie back at the floating market. After all this time, her father had never come looking for her and that showed just how heartless he was. Natalie finally got what she meant. Olivia was worried she'd get hurt being close to her scumbag father. She raised her eyebrow. "Don't worry. I'm the one who makes people feel uncomfortable, not the other way around." Harold chimed in from the back seat. "You go, girl! If anyone messes with you, we'll go beat them up with you!" Olivia nodded. "That's right! Let's do it!" Natalie smiled. "Deal."Soon, they reached the winding road up the hill. To Natalie's surprise, the guard post was still working. Their car was stopped by a barrier and iron gate, and a few young and strong security guards shouted, "Stop! What are you doing here?" Harold and Olivia exchanged glances. It had been over two years since the apocalypse, and they were already used to a life with no rules. Even the fanciest neighborhoods in the city had become open and empty with no guards at all. Harold muttered, "The guards here still work?" Olivia gasped. "Yeah, that's unbelievable." Natalie grinned. "Isn't that great? It just means more protection for us." Still, she knew in her heart it wouldn't last. In her previous life, when she came here, there hadn't been any guards left. Most likely the rich families had run out of supplies by then and couldn't pay them. Or maybe the guards themselves had already ... She shook the thought away and lowered her window. "Walter, it's me." Among the guards, a man in his forties stepped closer. When he recognized her face, he was shocked. "Ms. Ashford?" Natalie smiled. "It's been a while." Walter's eyes grew teary. "Long time no see. Ms. Ashford, you're still ... " He had worked here as a guard for ten years. Most of the residents had always looked down on people like him. Only Natalie would greet him politely whenever she passed through. Because of that, he remembered her well. Especially after Rosalie moved in, always strutting around and bossing the guards around just to show off her status. That only made Natalie, who had left, seem even more kind and decent. Walter didn't finish his sentence, but they both knew what he meant. A young woman that lived alone and was surviving through the apocalypse. The fact that Natalie was still standing here was nothing short of a miracle.
