Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 284 Lottie's Little Secret

At first, Natalie didn't think anything was wrong. She assumed Lottie was only trying to cheer Harold up. But when Cassian pointed it out, she realized—how could a child know how to play tricks just to please adults? Cassian saw her frowning and said calmly, "We just need to keep an eye out. She's only a kid. No matter how clever, she can't stir up real trouble." Natalie nodded. Lottie's body was so frail that even Lucky, with one wrong move, could knock the air out of her. Still, Natalie couldn't help worrying about Olivia. Meanwhile, in the apartment next door. Lottie sat quietly on the couch while Olivia undid her braids. The little girl rubbed her round belly and asked, "Mom, why do we get to eat meat when people outside don't even have leftovers?" Olivia chuckled. "Because Natalie is capable, that's why! But how do you even know the word ‘leftovers'?" Lottie lowered her eyes. "I ate them for a long time. When I couldn't find any, I just ate dirt." She glanced out the window with a pitiful look. "But the rain is poisoned now. I can't even eat dirt." Olivia's heart ached for her. She pulled Lottie into her arms. "Don't worry, sweetie. As long as Mommy's here, you'll never eat dirt again." Lottie nestled against her and whispered sweetly, "Mom, you're the best mom in the whole world. I love you so much." After a while, she asked, "Can I go to Natalie's house more often?"Olivia tapped her nose. "Natalie is my best friend. Do you like her too?" Lottie nodded. "She's not as bad as people say. And big brother lives with her." Olivia corrected her. "That's Cassian." Then she asked, "You seem to like Cassian a lot?" Lottie blushed and gave a shy nod. "I've never met a man as good-looking as him." Olivia froze for a moment. Man? Lottie described it clearly, yet it sounded strange coming from such a young girl. She patted Lottie's head and smiled. "Well, Lottie, you're very good-looking too." The girl perked up. "Really?" But then her smile faded, and she grumbled in despair, "But I'm too skinny." Olivia laughed. "Kids don't need to worry about that. Once life gets better, you'll grow strong and healthy." In Unit 1402, Natalie and Cassian were curled up on the couch, playing the video game console Olivia had given them. Cassian kept pressing the buttons, then asked, "So, you think Harold's handsome?" Natalie blinked. "What?" "You said he's good-looking." Natalie froze. She had no words. No wonder this man had kept piling food on her plate earlier. He'd been jealous. She shot him a look. "You're better looking. You're the most gorgeous man on earth!"Cassian's lips curved into a smile. On the screen, the game, which had been a tie, suddenly shifted—Natalie won. She raised her brow. "You let me win?" He shook his head, grinning. "Nope. You win fair and square." Natalie snorted. "Childish." They played for more than two hours. At last, Natalie yawned. "That's enough for today. I'm going to bed." She got up and headed toward the bedroom. Cassian trailed right behind her. Natalie turned, suspicious. "What are you doing?" His mouth tilted up. "Walking you home." She laughed. "I'm already home." "Doesn't matter. I want to feel what it's like." Natalie sighed and said nothing. Well, it made sense. Honestly, most couples didn't move in together right after getting together. But this was their first taste of love; every little moment felt new. They should experience everything. "Fine," she decided to play along with him. "Walk me home." They only made it a few steps before reaching her door. Natalie waved. "I'm home." She reached for the knob, but Cassian caught her hand."That's not how it works." She lifted a brow. "Then how?" He pulled her into his arms, leaned down, and kissed her gently. "Like this." Natalie's face burned all the way to her ears. "You always look cold and serious," she mumbled, "but when it comes to dating, you're way too clingy." Cassian pressed his lips together, hugging her tighter. "Tired of it already?" Natalie's cheeks flamed hotter. "Not really." They stayed wrapped up in each other for a long moment before finally letting go and heading to their separate rooms. The next morning, Natalie woke refreshed and found the rain outside had stopped. In her last life, the same thing had happened. The endless acid rain had paused. People thought it was over and rushed outside to gather supplies. But the rain soon started again, catching many off guard. More people died because of this. That acid rain dragged on, on and off, for over a month before it finally ended. Now the air was still and quiet. Everyone was waiting, watching, too cautious to step outside. Natalie walked out of her room and noticed something unusual—Cassian was still in bed. He was always the first one up, making breakfast before she even opened her eyes.
