Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog

Chapter 236 A Feast

Snowy was thriving under Olivia's care now. She even laid fresh eggs for Olivia to eat, so Olivia wasn't worried about raising two more rabbits. The three of them chatted as they walked into the other rooms. Apartment 1502 was the same layout as 1501—three bedrooms plus a loft. But all four rooms here had been turned into storage. The first room was full of gasoline and diesel. Some of it was neatly packed, clearly Harold's stash from before the disaster. The rest was in random containers, obviously, the fuel he and Olivia had collected from the streets. That room was on the shady side of the building, and Harold had sealed the windows and added fireproofing. The other three rooms were crammed with supplies. Most of it was food and water. A smaller part was daily necessities and materials Harold used for his traps and gadgets. Every inch of space was stacked tightly, from floor to ceiling. Harold told them, "You should sort your supplies like this. It's easier to find things, and it keeps you safe." Olivia nodded. "You've used the space really well. Not a single corner is wasted. If I organize mine like this, it won't look so messy, and I won't be tripping over stuff." Natalie silently agreed. Her storage space was massive, but she'd only done rough sections and piled things together. When she needed something fast, she often couldn't remember where she'd put it. Harold looked at them seriously. "I've been running all kinds of calculations these past weeks, and the results don't look good. This disaster could last a long time. And it might not just be floods and heat waves." Natalie glanced at him but said nothing.Normally, Olivia would've knocked on wood, but this time she only nodded. "Honestly, I've stopped pretending to be optimistic too." Natalie patted her shoulder. "We don't have to be too gloomy either. We'll just deal with whatever comes." Harold nodded. "Exactly. That's why I wanted you to see this. Supplies run out eventually. Growing and raising your own food is the only long-term solution." Olivia's eyes lit up with thought. Just then, Ghania's voice rang from across the hall. "Dinner's ready!" They hurried back into 1501. Ghania had already laid out all the dishes. Sautéed lettuce with garlic butter, spicy stir-fried tofu with peppers, Caesar salad, sautéed spinach with olive oil and garlic, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, spicy grilled rabbit, braised rabbit stew, and cast-iron chicken stew. Eight dishes in total—some meat, mostly vegetables. Before the world fell apart, a dinner with half the table full of veggies might've been considered stingy. But now? This was a feast. If the starving survivors outside saw this table, they'd probably lose their minds over the fresh greens. Too much protein had made their bodies crave fiber. Ghania beamed and waved them over. "Sit, sit! I don't know what you all like to drink, so I just brought out what we had!" She set out two bottles of Coke, two bottles of Sprite, and four cans of beer. Natalie's eyes widened. Drinks were scarce, even in Harold's well-stocked home. She remembered giving Harold a Coke once, and he treated it like treasure. She hadn't seen much soda at all during the house tour. Compared to Magnus's fake, showy feasts, this table was real hospitality.Natalie grabbed a soda, Olivia popped open a beer, and together they raised their drinks. "Happy birthday, Harold!" Ghania couldn't stop smiling. "Seeing you young folks get along like this makes me so happy. In times like these, just being alive is lucky. To sit down together and share a meal like this—it's a blessing. I hope you always stick together, help each other, and stay healthy!" Harold lifted his glass high. "To friendship!" Natalie and Olivia grinned at each other. "To friendship!" They laughed, toasted again, and finally dug in. The main dishes were mashed potatoes and buns. Natalie grabbed a bun and piled on some salad. She took a bite and said, "Ghania, this is delicious!" The food couldn't compare to Cassian's cooking in terms of flavor, but somehow it tasted extra warm and comforting. She hadn't eaten a meal made by an elder in a long time. Ghania smiled and pushed more dishes toward her and Olivia. "Eat up. There's plenty." The four of them ate and talked as they shared the meal. If it weren't for the end of the world, their three families would never have sat down like this, laughing and eating together.
