Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
"Why do you think Amber suddenly moved here?" Natalie asked. "Magnus sent her," Cassian replied. Natalie nodded. "I thought the same. But why would he suddenly send someone to spy on us?" She thought it over. She and Cassian had always been careful, keeping a low profile. They hadn't slipped up anywhere. Cassian gave a short laugh. "Not spying. Stirring up trouble." Natalie frowned. "Trouble? What for?" Nobody knew about her alliance with Cassian. To others, they were just neighbors in the same building. Even that fake "confession" yesterday had nothing to do with them—there was no rule against dating here. Cassian smirked. "Because he wants something he shouldn't." Natalie froze. "You mean, he's got his eye on me?" Cassian picked up a French fry and mocked, "And you say I don't understand romance. Honestly, you're even worse than me." She was sharp and cautious in everything else, but when it came to this, she was completely clueless. Natalie rebuked shamelessly. "Maybe too many guys like me, so I've gone numb." Cassian choked at that. He set down his fork and quickly took a sip of water. Natalie raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?" He chuckled. "My first thought was that you sound far too full of yourself. But then again, you're not wrong." She did stand out. Men were bound to notice. Natalie gave a small huff, then frowned. "Still, I never realized he was thinking that way." The image of Magnus's monkey-like face flashed in her mind. She shivered. Was he crazy? What kind of daydream was that? Curious, she asked, "How did you figure it out?" Cassian didn't answer. He just warned, "He's sly and calculating. Stay away from him. Leave it to me." Natalie nodded. Magnus had always been Cassian's target. Natalie only wanted to deal with Kelvin as quickly as possible. Once she figured it out, she felt more at ease. After all, she and Cassian weren't in the kind of relationship Magnus imagined. Whatever games Amber wanted to play, she could go right ahead. It was better that the enemies stayed busy with love and romance. No one would ever guess the two of them were here to take lives. After dinner, Cassian got up to wash the dishes. Natalie, still thinking about their earlier talk, leaned closer. "Once the food settles, want to spar?" She glanced at his arm. "Your arm can handle it?" Cassian's lips curved. "I won't use my arm." Oh, wow!Natalie's eyes widened. "Oh, look at you, so full of yourself!" "I'm alright," he said calmly. "Slightly humble compared with you." Natalie crossed her arms. "Fine. Just give me an hour. Then you'll see what real strength looks like." She started to head upstairs with Lucky. But since she and Cassian had eaten and chatted for so long, the dog had already dozed off by the couch. "Lucky, let's go home." Natalie shook her gently. The big dog rolled over and let out a loud snore. Natalie froze. Great. You're too heavy for me to carry now. Cassian chuckled at Lucky's goofy look and patted her head. "Let her sleep. We'll spar in an hour anyway." After thinking for a moment, Natalie nodded. "Fair enough." Cassian handed her a tablet. "Here, watch something to kill time." Then he went back to scrubbing dishes. The tablet was loaded with movies and shows. What surprised Natalie most was the watch history—every single episode of The Legend of the Crowned Women. Her go-to comfort drama. This cold, polished CEO actually likes this? She looked up at his tall, straight back and couldn't picture him binge-watching like a regular fan. Natalie picked a random movie instead. A few minutes later, the cushion beside her sank. Cassian had sat down. "What are you watching?" he asked, leaning closer. Natalie moved the tablet so he could see. "Just something random. Reincarnation 3." "Is it good?" "No idea. It's an old movie from 20 years ago. First time watching." They sat together in silence, watching the story unfold. On screen, the actress was binge eating, while the actor donned a crown and assumed the role of a god. Cassian frowned. "What are they doing?" Natalie sighed. "Saying their final goodbye." "I thought they were in love," Cassian said. "Why say goodbye?" "They guy thought the woman would never leave. The woman thought the guy would stop her from leaving. They missed their chance." Cassian snorted, "Useless man." Natalie smirked. "So, if you were the person, you'd ask her to stay?" Cassian pressed his lips together. "If it were me, she wouldn't make it out of that room." Natalie nodded. "If I were the girl, I wouldn't walk away either. I'd beat him until he gave in."
