Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
Natalie figured she'd bring Lucky along to see how well her dog had been trained lately. Olivia picked up Cash and blinked in surprise. "Nat, how did your chicken get this big so fast? He's like twice the size of Snowy!" "Snowy?" "Yeah, my little hen." Olivia pushed the door wider, and a white hen peeked out. She looked nervous, refusing to step outside, but her eyes stayed locked on Cash in Olivia's arms. The moment Cash spotted Snowy, he puffed his chest and strutted around, acting all mighty. Hah! What kind of chicken are you if you're that scared? After watching Natalie kill people that morning, Cash had been unusually well-behaved and low-key. But when he was out and at someone else's place, his cocky attitude returned. Natalie held back a laugh as she explained, "Mine eats a lot more, and he's a rooster. Guess males and females just grow differently." Olivia thought about it, then nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right." She gave Natalie a grin. "Don't worry. I'll make sure your chicken never goes hungry. I'll take good care of him!" Lucky glanced at Cash strutting around, then snorted and let out a fart. Hmph! Ugly chicken, what's there to brag about? I'm the one who gets to go out with Natalie, not you. It was obvious that Lucky still ranked number one in Natalie's heart. She pawed at Natalie's leg excitedly.Come on, let's go! Leave that ugly chicken behind! After leaving Olivia's place, Natalie went up to the 15th floor to drop off bullets for Harold. He accepted them, then said, "Wait a sec, Idol." He ducked inside and came back with a silver ring. The ring had no stone, just a square bump in the middle. It was simple, adjustable, and could work for anyone. Natalie was curious. "What's this?" Harold winked. "Brand new weapon I cooked up." "A weapon?" This ring is a weapon? He showed her how it worked. "There's a thin metal wire coiled inside. Press here, and it shoots out. If you wrap it around someone's neck and pull lightly, you can take their head clean off. "Good for situations where you can't carry a gun." Natalie tested it. It worked perfectly. She praised Harold. "You're amazing. You can make anything." He blushed at her compliment. "As long as you like it. I've got more cool stuff in the works. Once they're done, I'll send them over." After chatting for a bit, Natalie took Lucky downstairs. Across the street, Roderick jogged back to their car. "Mr. Holland, I asked around. They say the shooter lives in Building 6, and everyone thinks she's a psycho. "Just now, I happened to ask someone from Building 6 and got her name."Roderick paused, looking a little uneasy. "It turns out it's ... Natalie. "Mr. Holland, Ms. Ashford is beautiful and kind. No way she'd steal your stuff. Plus, she carries an assault rifle. I don't think she's the one we're looking for." He couldn't stop himself from standing up for the girl who once saved him. Cassian kept quiet, staring out the window. Just then, a plain Ford Transit rolled out of the gate. The window on the passenger side slid down, and a dog's head popped out, tongue hanging loose. Cassian blinked, then smirked. "Trail that van. Keep it low." Roderick, who was still giving his report with his back turned, hadn't seen a thing. When his boss suddenly gave the order, he froze for a second. They'd just been talking about Natalie, and now Cassian wanted to follow some random van? Still, Roderick was used to rolling with unexpected orders. He quickly obeyed, started the engine, switched off the lights, and tailed from behind. Natalie had chosen a plain ride today to slip into Cyril's brother's base unnoticed. Usually, the first thing she did in a car was crank up the air conditioner. But Lucky hadn't had fresh air for a long while. The second she hopped into the seat, she started pawing at the window like crazy. The seatbelt couldn't even hold her down. Natalie finally gave in and lowered the window. Lucky went wild, nose twitching nonstop. Dogs understood the world with their noses, so most of them loved the rush of air when the car sped up. The breeze carried all kinds of smells and clues. To Lucky, it felt like flipping through endless short clips—fast, fun, and full of surprises. Lucky hung her tongue out, sniffing everywhere excitedly. But after a few sniffs, she tilted her head, confused. Wait, why does this smell so familiar? She leaned farther out the window, taking in a big whiff. Her tail started wagging like crazy. This smell—it's Hottie! Where's he hiding? From the car right behind, Roderick had a clear view of the dog's head sticking out the window.
