Shining Through the Chaos with My Bulldog
A weak girl? Yeah right. Who the hell calls someone with an assault rifle who just wiped out over a hundred people a "weak girl"? "We wouldn't dare bully you," someone stammered. "We're just begging you to show mercy and let us take back our own supplies." Natalie snorted. "If you want your stuff back, go dig it out from Owen and his gang who stole your food in the first place! I'm not your maid or bodyguard!" With that, she fired a shot into the sky. The crack was deafening, and the crowd immediately stumbled back. Two younger ones were so terrified they wet themselves on the spot. Natalie's voice boomed with authority."Listen up! I'll count to five. If anyone's still standing in front of me by then, you're handing over ten pounds of grain! Don't have it? You die where you stand! "Five ... four ... " Everyone froze, stunned. Ten pounds of grain? How is she even more ruthless than Owen? At least those thugs pretended to be human! In an instant, the mob scattered like a flock of startled birds. Natalie had not even finished counting before the courtyard was empty. Some people ran so fast they left their shoes behind, not daring to return for them. A while later, Harold and Olivia finally finished hauling the loot upstairs. Olivia and Harold's homes were already well-stocked, and now every corner was crammed full. The rest—nearly half of the supplies—ended up going to Natalie. Olivia grinned, almost giddy. "Nat, my house is so full I'm worried the floor might cave in!" Harold chimed in, "I've got two houses, so space isn't really the problem. But we need to keep room for the chickens and rabbits, and my mom's already running herself ragged trying to organize everything at home." Natalie chuckled. "Guess having too many supplies can be a headache too." Her own share was still piled up in the stairwell, waiting for her to move them into her unit before she could stash them away in her storage space. Meanwhile, downstairs at Building 6, things got messy. Once people saw Natalie's crew had gone home, they rushed out to scavenge the rejects she had left behind—cockroach cakes, spoiled rice, snake meat.Disgusting stuff, but to them it was food. Nobody cared who had been robbed of what anymore. It was a free-for-all, each person grabbing whatever they could, even if it meant stealing right out of their neighbor's hands. Fights broke out, fists and teeth flying in the blazing 130 °F heat. Without cooling suits like Natalie's group, they were collapsing left and right, dropping dead in the sun while still clutching scraps of food. By the time the residents who lived farther away rushed over, there was not a scrap of supplies left under Building 6. All that remained were the corpses on the ground. Frustrated, they cursed bitterly at the neighbors who had moved faster and snatched everything up. "Damn selfish bastards!" someone roared. "Didn't even leave a crumb for the rest of us!"Others licked their lips, eyes fixed on the bodies and the blood pooling on the pavement ... Up on the 14th floor, Olivia handed Natalie her submachine gun back. "Nat, here's your gun." Natalie accepted it, then, after a moment's thought, held out her assault rifle instead. Olivia blinked. "Huh? Nat, you're giving me this?" "I'm heading out for a while," Natalie said. "You'll be guarding home. Can't do that properly without a decent weapon." She turned to Harold. "I've got another for you, too." His eyes widened. "For me?" Natalie nodded. Harold was reliable. He could have just hidden safely in his trap-rigged apartment, but instead, he had risked his life to help them. That counted for a lot. "Nat, where are you going? Is it safe?" Olivia asked. "Idol, how long will you be gone? I'll go with you!" Harold pleaded. Natalie just smiled faintly, not giving details. "I've got some personal business to handle. Don't know how long it'll take. You two just focus on keeping the home safe." In truth, she was planning to eliminate a hidden threat. In her previous life, Cyril had been killed by a man in Clearview Court who blew himself up along with the extortion crew. However, Cyril had an older brother, second-in-command of a massive private base. The two brothers often fought and ran separate operations, but deep down, their bond was strong. After Cyril's death, the brother had stormed in with his men and massacred the entire neighborhood in revenge. This time, Natalie was not going to wait around. With her foreknowledge, she intended to strike first, before the news even reached him. In the apocalypse, communication was unreliable, and Cyril and his brother did not live together. From Natalie's memory, his brother only found out about Cyril's death more than a month later and then came rushing over for revenge. She could definitely use that time gap to her advantage—strike first before he even got word, and wipe him out to prevent future trouble. Seeing that Natalie would not explain further, Harold and Olivia did not press. They just looked at her with worried eyes and said, "It's scorching hot out there, and danger's everywhere. Please be careful, Nat."
