Theresa, the Doomsday Queen

Chapter 709 Sage's Pitiful Backstory

"When I was very young, I rebelled just to get everyone's attention. Later on, I realized that rebellion only made people dislike me more. So I started learning the things adults liked, being the child they wanted me to be. Gradually, they began to see that I was even better than their illegitimate children." The gentle expression on Sage's face deepened, like a mask permanently welded to him, always showing a softness that drew people in. Theresa looked at him and said plainly, "No matter how good you are, you can't stop people's favoritism. It's that simple." Sage's gentle mask faltered for a moment. "My father was a sc*mbag. To get a household registration and a job in the big city, he married my mother to escape the remote village. Back home, he had another family, never came to my mother's house all year, and never cared about us. "I used to be so angry. Why didn't he care about my mother or me? Now, I understand that you can't force someone to love you. "Even if you're perfect in all aspects, if they don't love you, they won't see these qualities. And the key is, it's not your fault. You just have to accept the unfairness." Theresa spoke calmly without a trace of emotion. She had once deeply resented her own sc*mbag father. After learning the truth, she even wanted to strangle him and his family. But having lived two lives, she had long since made peace with herself. It wasn't her fault, and she had done nothing wrong. She was just unwilling to accept that her father didn't love them. After all, it was unfair. She no longer cared, for that family had already gone to hell together. Sage didn't speak after hearing her words. He gripped his beer can tightly, and after a long time, he finally looked up. "I think you're right." By the time he lifted his head, Theresa had wrapped herself in the blanket and fallen asleep, leaning against the edge of the couch. Sage looked at her, her head exposed, eyes tightly shut, yet her body remained in a state ready to strike at any moment, even while asleep. He blinked his long eyelashes and stayed in place, guarding her, completely still. If he moved even a little, even putting down the beer can could wake her up.The night passed, and when Theresa opened her eyes, she froze for a moment. Her gaze fell on the clock in Sage's room. It was already 8 a.m. "How did I fall asleep?" Theresa pushed the blanket aside. As she moved, Sage opened his eyes. "You're awake." "I thought I just nodded off for a bit. How is it already the next day?" At that moment, a series of beeping notifications sounded in Sage's earpiece. He immediately stood up. "They're here again to inject you." Theresa quickly got up from Sage's couch, acting very eager. "I'll go back right now." Seeing her like this, Sage frowned. "Theresa…" "What?" "Those people are going to give you an injection." "I know. I'm going to rule them all. I'll be off now!" Sage stayed silent. He watched as Theresa slipped into her slippers and headed upstairs, then followed her. A few minutes later, Theresa returned to her room. The trio from yesterday stood around, waiting for her. Seeing Theresa still wrapped in yesterday's towel, as if she had spent the night somewhere else before coming back, the three of them exchanged glances. "You're here," Theresa greeted them, waving her hand. The leader of the white coats nodded at her. When their eyes met, he gave her a look of reassurance. This time, Theresa sat very willingly at the edge of the chair and offered her arm. The white coat pulled a syringe out of their box, and Sage's brows knit into a deep frown when he saw the needle. When it pierced Theresa's skin, his frown deepened further. Yet, Theresa looked calm and compliant as though she didn't care at all.Had she really gone insane? Once the injection entered her body, Theresa felt her abilities, which had been suppressed all day, starting to return. She lifted her head and looked at the man, who remained silent. Behind him, his colleague rolled over the testing device. Theresa grabbed the ability-testing device with both hands. The special gemstones in her palms emitted a faint electrical pulse, which absorbed and displayed the data of her abilities. But this time, almost all of the lights on the device were gray.
