Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze

Chapter 561 I Can't Love Him

Baron’s brow furrowed slightly. "Got it. Send me all the evidence." "Right away, Mr. Baron. I already have people compiling it." Shauna had delegated the task before she arrived. Baron nodded. James hurriedly spoke up. "I’ve told you everything I know. As for the business on the high-seas cruise, I have the ledgers, but the profits don't all come to me." "Where are the ledgers?" Baron’s gaze swept over James. James cringed but still summoned the courage to ask, "Mr. Baron, I can give you the ledgers... but can you spare my life?" "Are you trying to negotiate with me?" Baron’s voice was laced with a casual laziness, but it made James shrink back in terror. "No, no! I was just asking." "So, where are the ledgers?" Baron ignored the question. James felt like he was about to burst into tears. This was just blatant bullying. But he truly didn't have the guts to defy Baron. Forget the fact that he couldn't possibly beat Baron in a fight; given Baron's power, what could he possibly say? "Can I take you there?" "You really aren't afraid I’ll kill you, are you." Baron flexed his arm, and the simple movement made James shriek in terror. "Ah! Don’t hit me! I’ll talk! I’ll talk, alright?" Baron couldn't stand such spineless behavior. James gave him the location, and Baron had Shauna dispatch a team to retrieve it. Seeing that they truly couldn’t squeeze anything else out of James, Baron had the lawyer bring in the documents. When James saw the lawyer, his face went pale. "Mr. Baron, I really didn't mean to cross you. Please, spare me." The towering man burst into tears, wailing loudly. Baron could hardly bear to look at such a pathetic display. "Shut up! I never said I was going to kill you. What are you crying for? Pathetic." James immediately shut his mouth. The lawyer handed the documents to Baron, who passed a pen directly to James. "Sign." James' face turned several shades paler. "Mr. Baron, I told you what you wanted to know! If you make me sign something, you’re sentencing me to death! If my boss finds out I talked, I’m dead!" "This is for your house in Ocean City. You’re donating it. Now sign." Baron truly didn't understand. How could someone so terrified of death manage to build such a large operation? Or was this all just an act? James felt Baron’s scrutinizing gaze and hurried to say, "I’ll sign! It’s just a house! If you like it, Mr. Baron, I have other houses. You can take your pick! This one in Ocean City is my most run-down property. It’s beneath someone of your status." Baron snorted. "Who wants your house? Do I look like I’m short on property? Look closely, James. You’re signing this house over to your son." "Who?" James thought he had misheard and looked up at Baron. Baron said coldly, "The son Beth had for you. The son who has spent the last few years nearly dying at your hands. James, you really are a piece of work. Your own flesh and blood, and you dare to abuse him like that? Do you even have a conscience?" James suddenly fell silent. He lowered his head, saying nothing, but Baron saw moisture gather at the corners of his eyes. A single drop fell, then another. Slowly, they began to flow."You have the nerve to cry? Your son was on the verge of death, and he never shed a tear. James, if you didn’t want him, you should never have acknowledged him. But to claim him and then abuse your own son... calling you an animal is an insult to the word." Baron had the most contempt for parents who sired children but refused to raise them. They were just like his own deadbeat father. James' shoulders shook. What began as silent weeping soon became unbearable, and he broke down, howling in despair. "What the hell are you crying about? Was I wrong?" Baron was getting a headache. He was a grown man, why was he crying harder than a woman? James was sobbing too hard to speak. Baron couldn’t be bothered with him and decided to just wait until he cried himself out. More than ten minutes later, James finally regained some composure. He looked at Baron and asked, "Mr. Baron, how is my son now? Is he with you? Or is he back with Beth?" "Well, what do you know. You actually care if they’re alive or dead," Baron said mockingly. James slapped himself hard across the face before speaking. "I’m human, too! How could I not love my son? But I can’t love him!" "I thought that once I had money, I could give Beth and our son the best life. My boss even told me I could bring them to live with me, to reunite our family. I was so happy... but who knew? After Beth and the child arrived, it wasn’t at all what I had imagined!"
