Grief, Betrayals, and a Core of Blaze
"Daddy, Mommy, where did you go? Huh? Who is this boy?" Susie rubbed her little eyes and yawned, but her eyes snapped wide open when she saw Holt, filling with astonishment and excitement. "You’re so pretty!" After speaking, Susie scrambled on her short legs and threw herself at Holt. "Hug!" "Don’t!" Natalie instinctively tried to stop her, but it was too late. Beth’s first instinct was to protect her son and push away the charging Susie, but when she heard Susie call Baron "Daddy" and Natalie "Mommy," she froze. Baron and Ms. Stone really have children? She had heard rumors before, but she always thought Baron had said it on purpose. After all, Natalie was only twenty-three or twenty-four; how could she have children? But now, seeing Susie, she was completely shocked. Could it be that Ms. Stone also had children when she was eighteen or nineteen? In the instant Beth hesitated, Susie had already lunged into Holt’s arms. Her momentum was so strong that she knocked Holt straight over. Holt just felt a soft little dumpling press down on him, staring at him with bright, excited eyes. She even had a faint smell of milk on her. Although Susie and Sean were four, Baron insisted they keep up the habit of drinking milk formula. Susie not only drank formula but also loved milk, so the milky scent on her was even stronger. Holt could sense that the little dumpling in his arms meant him no harm, and the pure adoration in her eyes made Holt’s own eyes warm. I... can be liked? Clearly, Father said I was a jinx, that I should have died long ago, and that no one would ever like me. But the fondness in this little dumpling’s eyes was impossible to hide. "I’m Susie, you can call me Natalie. You’re really good-looking! What’s your name?" Susie didn't care at all about the position she was in, splayed on top of Holt; her entire attention was focused on his face. Wow! Other than my brother, he’s the best-looking boy I’ve ever seen! Natalie was exasperated and amused by the scene. This little girl loved all beautiful things, and it turned out that applied to people as well. But Natalie was actually very happy. It was in every child’s nature to love beautiful things. Holt’s past was too dark. If Natalie could reintroduce him to beauty, it would also be a form of therapy. "You’re going to crush him." Natalie quickly intervened, lifting her daughter up. "Mommy, who is this handsome brother? Is he a guest at our house? I like him a lot." Baron’s expression soured. "You like him? You don't even know who he is!" "Mommy, look, Daddy is being mean to me." Susie pointed at Baron, tattling to Natalie. Natalie smiled and tapped her daughter’s little nose, saying, "This boy is named Holt. He is my apprentice, and he’ll be living with us from now on. You can call him Holt.""Hello!" Susie called out to Holt, a sweet smile on her face. Holt felt as if he was looking at an angel. This little dumpling truly made him feel a sense of warmth. He wanted to speak but didn't know how to start. He fumbled in his clothes and found a milk candy that Beth had bought for him. Beth wished she could compensate her son for the past two years, but his current state left her unsure what to do. She just remembered he used to like White Rabbit milk candy, so she bought him some. But Holt, who previously would have eaten all the candy at once, now only took one, didn't eat it, and kept it in his pocket. Beth didn't know what it meant, but seeing how Holt treasured it, she knew the candy was important to him. Now, Holt was actually taking out the candy he loved so much. Beth was stunned. She watched as Holt held out the milk candy to Susie. Susie’s eyes grew even brighter. "Is this for me?" Holt nodded. He seemed to really like this little sister. "Thank you." Susie took the candy from Holt, struggled to jump out of Natalie’s arms, and then ran back to her room on her little legs. She returned a moment later, but this time she was holding a card. "Here, a gift in return." Beth saw that it was a black card and was so frightened she immediately tried to stop it."You can’t accept this! This is too valuable."
