He Cheated. I Rose.
"Chloe, I..." Arthur began, about to explain he needed to take Jennifer and Jenarth to the hospital first. But before he could finish, Chloe cut him off, her tone cool and detached. "Arthur, you still haven't knelt down to apologize!" The faint hope on Arthur's face vanished, replaced by a look as if he'd swallowed something sour. Kneel down! The whole farce was over, yet Chloe was still hung up on this, refusing to let it go. When had she become so petty? Arthur forced himself to stay calm, swallowing his anger. "Chloe, who exactly do you want me to kneel to? You? Or Robert?" Every word was gritted out between clenched teeth. "What's the matter, Mr. Myers? No backbone? You make promises and then just blow them off? No accountability?" Chloe taunted. "Seems the big CEO of Myers Group is all talk. No class whatsoever." Arthur's temper flared. Staring at Chloe's smug expression only made him angrier. But with Keith from Sunny Group, Sherman from Eaton Group, all the children, and their parents watching, refusing to honor his word would make him a complete joke. "Chloe, I'm your husband! I'm Robert's father! You want me to kneel to you? Are you out of your mind?" Arthur's voice was a low, furious growl, meant only for Chloe's ears. Chloe just laughed. "Arthur, you seem to have forgotten—we've been divorced for a long time! The papers are signed and sealed. Husband? Father? Don't make me laugh." Her retort was icy. She glanced past him. "Isn't your precious son on his way to the hospital? Shouldn't you be running after him, hanging on his every whimper? He's your favorite, after all." Her words landed like a series of stinging slaps to his pride. He'd been trying to keep his relationship with Jenarth under wraps. But Chloe clearly didn't care about that anymore. His relationship with Jennifer and Jenarth wasn't even like that. Was she saying all this just to get a reaction out of him? Was that it? Arthur's fists clenched, his knuckles white as he fought to control his rage. "What exactly do you want?" "Kneel down and apologize! You said it yourself, right in front of Robert—if he was innocent, you would kneel and apologize. Now the truth is out. So either kneel, or stand here and announce to everyone that you, Arthur, are a complete fool! Blind! Clueless! Shameless!" Chloe hammered home those last four words. Those words seemed to echo, and every pair of eyes in the courtyard locked onto Arthur. Eugene heard every word, crystal clear. Outside the gates of Eaton Kindergarten, a sleek black car sat idling by the curb. Inside, Eugene watched the drama unfolding at the school's entrance. He'd been there since Keith arrived. Initially, Eugene had been casually flipping through an international investment magazine, as if the chaos outside was none of his concern. From the driver's seat, Bruce watched through the rearview mirror. He'd noticed the shift in Eugene's mood the moment the crowd started pressuring Robert to kneel. The magazine in Eugene's hand was clenched tightly. Bruce saw Robert's bold, fearless slap. He really had guts, and Bruce couldn't help but feel a spark of admiration. So cool and so calm! Bruce stole another glance in the mirror. Eugene's attention was now completely captured by the scene at the kindergarten, the magazine forgotten. Bruce raised an eyebrow. Did Mr. Rosewoodclaim we were going to check out a new mall, yet somehow we ended up parked right outside Eaton Kindergarten? Remembering the investigation Eugene had ordered just half an hour ago, Bruce marveled inwardly at just how invested Eugene was in Chloe's situation. He must have been itching to see how she'd handle this. First Robert took the stage, and now it was Chloe's turn to shine? And that ex-husband of hers still had the nerve to talk back to her in public! Chloe was calling Arthur out for being shameless in front of everyone. Bruce wondered if the man could even handle that. There was no way Arthur could bring himself to publicly announce that he was shameless. He glared at Chloe, fury burning in his eyes. Chloe had gone too far today. And Robert, too. Sure, it had been a misunderstanding. Once cleared up, a simple apology should have been enough. Why keep pushing? And Robert had even hit Jenarth. This kid... Was Chloe doing all this because she was jealous? Was he paying too much attention to Jennifer and Jenarth? Was this divorce and all this drama just an elaborate scheme to get his attention? To make sure he never forgot her, to make him feel eternally guilty for letting her down?
