He Cheated. I Rose.
"Mr. Rosewood, I'll deliver this to Ms. Lewis," the bodyguard said, turning to leave. "Wait." The bodyguard froze mid-step. Eugene stood and took the bag directly from the bodyguard's hands. "I'll handle this myself." With that, he strode out of the room. The bodyguard stood there, completely baffled. What's with Mr. Rosewood today? This is such a simple task. Does he really need to do it personally? From her hospital bed, Chloe glanced at Eugene sitting nearby, then at Robert keeping her company. Ever since Eugene entered the room, Robert's curious eyes hadn't left him. "Mr. Rosewood, this is my son, Robert," Chloe offered as a quick introduction. Eugene looked at the boy and smiled warmly. "Hello, I'm Eugene." Robert stared back, muttering the name under his breath, then clicked his tongue. "Your name sounds way cooler than Arthur's." Chloe raised an eyebrow. This kid was starting something again. Robert stretched out his small hand toward Eugene. "Hi, I'm Robert Lewis." Hearing the name, both Chloe and Eugene paused for a second. Chloe narrowed her eyes at Robert. But Robert continued seriously, "I'm Mommy's precious kid. Since she divorced that no-good, restless dad of mine, I take her last name now!" Chloe sighed internally. Eugene couldn't help but chuckle at the introduction. "Nice to meet you, Robert. That's a great name." Robert turned triumphantly to Chloe. "See, Mommy? I told you Robert Lewis sounds better!" Much better than Robert Myers, anyway. Chloe quickly interjected, "Sorry, Mr. Rosewood, please don't mind him. My son can be... a lot." Eugene's smile remained. "It's fine. Kids should be lively." "See, Mommy? He agrees with me!" Robert declared solemnly. "So from now on, I'm Robert Lewis, okay? You have to change my name at the kindergarten too!" Chloe pressed her lips together. She forced a patient smile. "Sweetie, I just spilled my water. Could you go to the nurses' station and get me another cup of water? Make sure it's warm, please." Robert wanted to argue that there was a water pitcher right beside them, but one look at Chloe's expression told him he'd pushed far enough. Taking the hint, he grabbed the cup and dashed out of the room. "Sorry about that. He's just very... outgoing," Chloe apologized again for her son's forwardness."He's wonderful. You're lucky to have a son like him," Eugene said, his praise genuine. "If I had a kid like that, I'd be showing him off to everyone." Chloe breathed a quiet sigh of relief. Thank goodness Robert hadn't heard that, or his ego would've been unstoppable. "Mr. Rosewood, about my injury... it's been treated. I was thinking..." Chloe began, wanting to say the wound wasn't serious and she planned to check out. "Ms. Lewis, please don't worry. I've settled all the bills. You should stay until you're fully recovered. If you need anything, just ask the staff," Eugene said seriously. "You were hurt because of me. I'd feel terrible if you left like this." "But I..." "Ms. Lewis, to be frank, I'm a businessman." Eugene looked directly at her, his tone earnest. "I came to Capaville to finalize some major investments. The sums involved are... significant. That kind of attention brings trouble, as you've seen." Chloe listened. His simple explanation made sense. Those "significant sums" had to be enormous. "You didn't have to explain your business to me," Chloe replied simply. "I did." Eugene's voice grew firmer. He held her gaze intently. "This incident pulled you into my problems. If the people targeting me decide to come after you because of it, that responsibility falls on me." Chloe saw the conviction in his eyes and fell silent, unsure how to respond. Just as he said, if those who had wanted him dead had struck again, and she had been dragged into it because she saved him, she would have been in potential danger. Seeing her hesitation, Eugene pressed on. "So, Ms. Lewis, from now on, if you ever feel unsafe, my people will ensure your protection." "I don't..." The words "need it" died in her throat. Chloe looked at the determined man before her, hesitated for a beat, then offered a soft, resigned smile. "Fine. I'll rest here for a few days. But please, Mr. Rosewood, wrap up your personal matters quickly. Let's avoid any more trouble."
