Chapter 408 Jennifer's Proposal

Carolyn sneered and started to walk away. "Ms. Lewis, might you be interested in joining me for coffee?" Hearing Jennifer's voice, Carolyn ignored it completely and kept walking. The sports car remained idle. Jennifer watched the retreating figure in her rearview mirror and smiled. "Ms. Lewis, we share a common enemy. Are you certain you don't wish to talk?" Jennifer simply stared at Carolyn's back. At first, Carolyn showed no hesitation, continuing forward without a glance back. But soon, her pace gradually slowed. Finally, after one more step, she stopped, her foot hovering as if pulled by an invisible string. Carolyn stood frozen, visibly wrestling with a decision. She didn't have to wait long. After a few tense seconds, Carolyn spun around as if struck by a current and hurried back to the car. She grabbed the window frame, leaning in to look at the driver. "Are you serious? We have the same enemy?" Hearing the urgency in Carolyn's voice, Jennifer offered a faint smile. "Ms. Lewis, please get in. We have much to discuss." ***** In a private dining room at an upscale restaurant, only two people sat at the spacious table. Jennifer held a glass of champagne gracefully, swirling the liquid without drinking, her eyes fixed on Carolyn, who sat across from her shoveling food into her mouth like someone possessed. Carolyn ate ravenously, as if she'd forgotten all decorum. A subtle, knowing smile touched Jennifer's lips. Carolyn had clearly been in hiding too long, too afraid to be seen even to eat properly. Hunger had overridden every other concern. Now, faced with a proper meal, she abandoned all pretense of manners. Finally, when she could eat no more, Carolyn stopped. She wiped her greasy hands on a napkin with little care and looked directly at Jennifer. "You paid for the meal. Don't expect a thank you." Jennifer's smile didn't waver. "I didn't." Carolyn forced herself to appear calm. She didn't know Jennifer's game—whether this was mere mockery or something else—but it didn't matter now. She was fed. It was time to leave. She stood up and headed for the door. Just as she reached it, Jennifer's voice stopped her again. "Do you want to take Chloe down?" Carolyn froze mid-step. That name was pure venom in her heart now. She turned back. "What are you saying?" "You see, I dislike Chloe intensely," Jennifer said softly, her smile serene. "I've always regretted that the... accident before the gala didn't finish her." Carolyn's eyes widened. She turned and strode back to the table, leaning over it with both hands. "That was you? The hit-and-run before the celebration? The one Chloe was in?" She'd heard bits about it—that Chloe had been in a serious accident, that her lawyer friend was badly injured. She'd often wished it had been Chloe who was hurt instead. In her heart, she'd even felt a twisted gratitude toward the unknown perpetrator. Now, Jennifer was confessing to it. A wave of new respect, dark and cold, washed over Carolyn. Jennifer was clearly not the weak, harmless social climber she pretended to be. Carolyn's gaze turned icy. "What do you need me to do?" Seeing the spark of vengeance in Carolyn's eyes, Jennifer's smile deepened. She gently swirled her champagne. "So eager, even before hearing my terms?" Carolyn met her look with a cold sneer. "As long as Chloe pays, I don't care what it costs me—even my life." Hearing this, Jennifer's smile widened. ***** Charles had suddenly returned to Myers Manor. At his command, all the senior members of the Myers family were urgently summoned. Even Arthur, who was in the middle of meetings in Arcania, received the notice to return immediately—Charles had a critical announcement to make. When Madilyn, halfway through a facial at her spa, got the news, she didn't even wait to remove the mask. She rushed back in a panic. By the time she arrived, she found only Charles seated imposingly in the main living room. Kevin Nash, the family lawyer, stood beside him, a document in hand."Is the transcription complete?" Charles asked, his voice cool. "As you instructed." Kevin nodded and began reading from the paper. "First clause: Fifty-one percent of the shares in Myers Group held in your name are to be transferred in full to Chloe Lewis and Robert Lewis."
